    Interesting. Some random comments from someone about the age of that radio: I was amused that you referred to it as a "stereo". Almost everyone would these days, that term is ingrained in our consciousness. But it isn't stereo, it's mono. Stereo sets wouldn't start to come along until the early 1960s. The little white tube with wires wrapped around the ends is a very low value capacitor, on the order of several picofarads, or, as they would have said in those days, "micro-microfarads", abbreviated mmf, rather than the pf we use these days. Absolutely no reason to think that it would be bad. The burning you saw on the cap near the orange replaced cap doesn't necessarily mean that cap was bad. What happened was that the original of the replaced cap got hot and burned up. What you are seeing is collateral damage on the other cap, but that discoloration would probably not have been enough to cause problems with it. (All the paper and electrolytic caps were likely bad now and needed replacing. But when the fried cap was replaced with that orange cap originally, the other paper caps were likely still usable.) The back-to-back bumblebee caps were obviously a replacement at some point in time. Probably another paper cap that went bad. Probably not done at the same time as the orange cap replacement. The way the wires were twisted together shows a real amateur did the repair, as does the mismatched foil ends of the caps.

    It's working, the volume drop is normal cause it acts as resistance/clipping. If you put it before the transformer, with the right resistance set up, it should work similar to a tube, but with a tiny opto compression aspect.

    When the outside temperature is below about 40F the unit seems to run longer and louder than usual. It gets warm and maintains the temp but working harder than normal. When it is that cold outside we turn the unit off and use the radiator heater.

    Electro Harmonix markets a 7868. They work well. Beware though, the pins are larger since it’s a MAGNOVAL base. Once you use one you’ll can never go back to USA tubes. But, it’s not too hard to replace a socket (usually) so your decision is ok. It’s not a collectable amp. It doesn’t look like you used shorting jacks and a 33k Ω resistor on the jack. Add those and you’ll tame some noise.

    I can't help but think how, for what this would have fetched on ebay from some audiophile, you could've then grabbed like 2 or 3 old Hammond (AO-35 or AO-44 or similar) reverb amps and made 2 or 3 different guitar amps out of them, though there is a limit to what you can do with those without completely rewiring the tube sockets and rebuilding the entire signal path from scratch, whereas these old PA amps are basically already clean-ish guitar amps and with those separate preamp tubes for each mic input, it would actually be rather easy in the future to cascade the phono stage into the first mic input stage, then into the second, and get a monster of an amp out of this thing, all in a day's work, so I guess it's worth it.

  • @stratokev2
    @stratokev2 Жыл бұрын

    Yes, someday in my spare time I should attempt to route the phono and mic inputs as you suggested. The amp is already loud, that would make it insanely loud. It would be great I bet.

  • @AdamRainStopper
    @AdamRainStopper Жыл бұрын

    @@stratokev2 So, let's say you cascade phono to mic 1 to mic 2, you already have a volume control for mic 2, it would act more or less as your master volume, so you could at least squeeze it a bit before the phase inverter, giving you tons of front end gain and controllable volume.

  • @AdamRainStopper

    I tried once, first, to rescue an ntire M100. A dude in the most rural place in CT was literally gonna throw it away, offered it to me when we'd been bullshitting about guitars on a forum somewhere. He even told me the names of several famous people who used the same model in the studio (as if I needed convincing). So, dad had a truck, and the guy had a forklift, getting it ON the truck was no problem, we just had to push from one end and pull and guide from the other, then tie it with ratchet straps. It was trying to wheel it down my homemade ramp that was the problem. After 2 hours of hurting ourselves, we both looked at each other and said "it's time." We stepped back and let it land. It toppled multiple times. The tonewheels and start motor already needed work, so I'd planned on having the amps and speakers (2 P12s and a P8) as a backup plan to make it worth the trip. It was worth the trip. Basically all I did with the AO-44 is exactly what you did without the adding in a pedal up front part. I just jumped the input hot lead to the grid of the first tube, because that stuff at the beginning is all to make it dark, otherwise the reverb tank would feed back a bit. The transistor was an afterthought, the other reverb amps in Hammonds don't have that. But I ripped out the stuff the transistor was there to push through, so I ripped out the transistor too. Oh, and I also disconnected the NFB loop. Mine is, as a result, even louder and brighter than yours. I love it though, I have a Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic, which is a little on the dark side if you push it beyond a moderate dad-rock crunch, but it sounds pretty well balanced through my stripped down AO-44. I'm terrified to add a tone stack unless it can be something dead simple, fully passive and maybe with a relay that would bypass it completely if it's annoying me one day. I considered adding a 12ax7, the PT is more than capable of handling one or two or 4 additional tubes. But again, I am afraid to ruin it. I'd need to set it up to be easy to revert it back to how it is.
