It SUUUUUUUUCKS
Very interesting review. I was also shocked about how poorly the Polar Vantage V3 wrist-sensor records heart rate, when looking at your charts. It is completely off a lot of the time?
Is there a garmin watch you'd recommend that has the features of the Venu 3S but better mapping capabilities for backcountry backpacking?
Best review I've seen so far. The only thing I would have liked added would have been the Heart Rate Monitor... especially the ECG capabilities.
Venue 3 and vivoactive 5 does not show active calories during a workout on any data screen. Tried the connectiq data screens as well. The forerunner 265 and 965 has this option. Even the Apple Watch 7 had this option

I just bought a Garmin not realising there has been a change in interface. I will be returning the watch and going back to my Apple Watch. UI is really important to me.
Garmin have enshittified or dumbed down the app to appeal to a wider audience who just want a fashion accessory. Less data, less function, less customisation. Form over function. They've ignored their existing customers. They've mixed up the homepage with the next page where as it should be basic data on numerous metrics all in a compact design.
The new layout seems another step backward for Garmin, all my fellow runners cyclists liked the version 3 steps back with the 3 circles on the homepage with stats on. Just because they update it does not mean its better.
I like the old layout much better, and I see no reason not to let us users choose ourselves if we want the new or the old layout
I want my sleep data back
Many thanks DesFit for this great review and for your other watches video reviews. I'm new to sports watches and Garmin. Decided on getting a Fenix 7 Pro! So far I really like it! Very impressed. I prefer the MIP over AMOLED at moment for a sports watch and a watch in general. Thanks again. :)
One year later - and the choice has not become easier. As a current owner of a Vivoactive 4, I wanted to upgrade to a watch that would give more training statistics, but still had a touch screen. Coming from an early generation OLED watch (the infamous Huami GTR), I know watchfaces just look better on an OLED display. But I also remember not being able to see the screen during workouts. And I like my VA4 to be dark until I touch the screen (the night/early morning issue you mentioned). So now I prefer MIP displays. If the Forerunner 255 had a touch screen, this would be my natural choice (hobbyist runner, some walking/hiking, indoor running, rowing and elipsiod-training). In my country, we get the 255Music for a tad under 300€, the FR955 at 370-380, the Fenix 7 base model for 420-30, FR265 for 415-440. Should I - in 2024 - go for the Fenix 7 base (!) model, or jump back to OLED and get the FR265. Or dump the touch screen and just get a FR255Music? (I looked for good deals in the used market, but there are more expensive models available and even older ones. The ones I would like are probably the ones people keep still using.)
Yeah, I agree each widget takes up too much space.
Trying to be constructive, but the new app is a train wreck, I was part of the Beta and switched it off after 1 day, half the data in twice the space, thanks for your tips hopefully they will listen to your recommendations !
I always said Garmin has great hardware, their software has always left a lot to be desired and at best is meh….
I really don't like this new update on the app and website. The previous version gave you so much freedom, at least on the website, on what you want to see on the home page. With this new update pretty much every 'quick access" widget I used in the previous version - like a selectable list of works and be able to select whether to see just my run/swim/bike workouts and a quick glance of total millage on my gear, like seeing critical info like how many miles are on my pair of running shoes - has been removed and buried deep into menus. It's really frustrating and pretty much destroyed my training workflow immediately. The biggest one being the quick list of my own custom workouts and being able to filter by activity right from the home page. Now having to go Training & Planning, then Workouts ... I mean you can't even filter the workouts to just show a specific activity type. I honestly don't understand why it needed to change in the first place. I really wish they gave an opt-out option and continue to use the old layout. My Home Screen used to have all the important information that I needed to know, now it literally doesn't give me an option to show the information that is critical to my training.
i would choose the fenix 7 pro for my wrist
Thanks for this video, Des. I think the Intensity Minutes glance should show the IM for the day rather than the accumulated IM for the week. The previous version did that but they have changed it for some reason that is beyond me. I hope Garmin will revert back to the former. These glance widgets should be data for the current day, used to be called My Day, which was very useful for daily wellness and fitness tracking. Daily, followed by Yesterday and then 7 day averages. Thanks.
electrode gel is super cheap and available at everyone's favorite online store. I'm not sure why more people don't use it on their HR chest straps for dry skin/cold weather/lack of sweat. It makes for an extremely strong reading on my Polar H10 at all times and I even put apply it to the strap when I will end up sweating a bit... why not ensure great readings from the very start of the run
Can they update their edge 540 for incident detection mode if there is no device paired can they show the rider information
The layout is horrible and all over the place. One section goes up and down the other goes left and right all on the same screen. Terrible and unnecessarily confusing
Hate it. Why change what was already working fine? The update makes me not want to use the app.
Do you know if any running watches can listen to KZread? Or which are best for music? I bought the garmin 255 music and it’s terrible for listening to music. It keeps cutting out when I’m listening to Spotify. I’ve looked on the garmin site for help and it’s not helped. Thanks
I'm a relative user of Garmin (summer 2023, awitched from Fitbit) and i really like it, so I'm happy to roll with the new connect app. But, i think from what I've seen on X (twitter) some of the Beta testers were sycophants, they were so excited to be chosen that they said the update was amazing. It isn't - it has only changed the 'front of house' and done a bad job of it. Everything under the front of jouse is the same, it just takes lomger to get to and isn't customisable as the app says it is.
More phucking colour.!!!! It's dull and black.
Very useful vid, tks. Last 7 days is an irrelevant figure. Garmin cycling goals are designed by year/month. This is the data I believe needs focus and not last 7 days. My Instinct 2x Solar is now displaying weekly mileage but can not find on connect or express. I do agree with your recommenations and agree with that display. Tks.
All I ever wanted was to see my total mileage 1st Jan to 31st Dec each year. Unless this has just arrived its only available on the calendar at the foot of the page. Not checked api access recently but when I did your profile needed to be public to get this stat. Logged all my miles since 2010, and still only check the calendar.🙄
If Garmin is reading these I do need them to know that the Menstrual Cycle tracker has never been good and continues to not be good. It should be much simpler to note when your period starts and ends instead of having to navigate through several windows to get to the calendar to clunkily edit it there. Symptoms are so basic and make tracking useless for tracking very common symptoms that can be associated with PMDD. Add a whole lot more symptoms and moods or better yet, let us custom add symptoms/moods. It does not feel like it is a view that was designed by or even consulted with women before implementing.
Your video encouraged me to actually take the effort to change the screen 😂 but I do agree that it isn’t the most desirable situation at the moment. Like the suggested mockup.
Comparing the Garmin website page by page, I noticed some differences. On PREPARE features: missing INTENSITY MINUTES and AUDIO PROMPTS on the 965. On PERFORM features: missing TRIATHLON AND MULTISPORT PROFILES on the 965, any thoughts about this? I am a runner and cyclist (road/gravel)
Those sections are merely high level overviews. The specs page will have more details such as the fact that the 965 has triathlon and multisport profiles.
Old version… way better… A lot of info in a compact form, then click whatever you want to expand…
$400 are for the base watch, $50 are for the unique features and improved specs and the remaining $350 are looks
Garmin bring back the three circles or a page that gives us all the important data from our run, swim, workout etc. Garmin's customer service is amazing which just baffles the mind as to why Garmin's new interface hasn't given the customers what we've been asking for.
Thank you for this vdo. Is it possible to measure blood pressure with one of them? If so, with what precision?

Great proposals from you , Des! This would really make the Start Page better. I'll hide the "In Focus" section right away. With the new Start Page as it exists now, I feel it just looks uglier than the old design (seems I like round corners). Your mockup looks like a much more worthwhile modernization of the thing. The update barely touches the underlying problems of the (Android) Connect app. OK, the navigation now has "back arrows" like an iPhone app on the sub-screens, something you had to use your phone's back-key or gesture for before. The discoverability of functions and data still is not very good (which data will I find where. Which sub-screen may hide the eye-opening major function that hardly anyone ever heard of? (How many people do know how to setup a training. Or even know about Garmin Coach, which they advertise very much on their product web pages).
It's OK 😂 but I'd like the option to disable the nap feature, it's inaccurate and very annoying 😂🤣😂
Garmin missed one thing. To hire Des a a UI designer. :)
Don’t like the new layout at all. I like that’s it’s customisable but I can’t customise it with a single thing that is actually important to me, so I’ve ended up turning everything off, leaving a page of nothing. Since the update, the home screen is nothing more than a waste of space that I can’t use. I’d love to see a customisable home screen where every feature can be added or hidden, not just body metrics.
I absolutely hate it. So much I'm tempted to change my watch brand
Did anyone notice that this watch has some delay / latency in turning on the screen when you just simply rotate the hand to check what time it is? First time, when you rotate the hand, the watch is having some delay in turning on the screen, but if you rotate the hand immediately, for the 2, 3rd time there is no delay? Is it only my watch that is having this issue or this is by design a Garmin behavior?
I really agree with you on the different point you brought up. We now get more information, but the sections takes up way too much space. To get to the information I have to scroll way too much, and that’s quite annoying. Also, when looking at activities for the last 7 days, my indoor climbing sessions are now categorized as strength workouts, and that’s just not correct. I love more data/information, but the sections need to be slimmed down quite a bit. Also, I like to be able to have more of a choice on what to see on screen from all the data panels. But definitely keep yesterday, and the last 7 days info.
Sorry , but the new update is simply terrible . It is so much of a downgrade that it has actually cured me of wearing my Garmin as my default daily watch . Now this is expensive , since I can now justify shopping for a new watch , having previously sworn off buying new watches as until recently nothing was displacing my garmin as my wrist ornament of choice ( and try as I might , I just can’t pull off the “one on each wrist” look ) . Please , Please , Please make the old format a choosable option , I just don’t want to give £ to Rolex / Omega / Panerai , and only Garmin can help me !
This watch packs so many features in a nice package. Recently my Fenix 5x battery decided it was time to die and no luck to replace from Garmin Support here. So, it´s about to get help somewhere else for a new battery or buy a new watch. The 165 ticks all the boxes for all the activities I normally do, but of course I would miss the Fenix feeling :D Great video and very detailed information as usual. Cheers!
Very nice Video Desfit! Thank you
👍
Des UI suggestions are great!
Do you need this and a watch? Is the watch not as accurate for heart rate measurements?
I really don't like the new design. everything is small and as you mentioned the in focus part is very limited. The thing that bothers me most, is the activity, once you finished it, is so small! It used to be big and at the top of the page "celebration" style. But now it's just another data point. Shame. I really hope they give the users the ability to go back to the old view. Also, I think this is very unthoughtful from Garmin's side! The users paid a lot of hard earned money for the product, and Garmin just changed a huge part of it without any consideration of the user. They just forced it on the users, without the choice to accept/ rejected it which is very unthoughtful!
Agreed with all your suggestions
