I remember I watched this Last Night on german television (yes, indeed german television (N3) broadcast the Last Night of the Proms for years) when I was 18, and I was very impressed of the performance and the athmosphere! Rule Britannia!... at least the waves... greetings from a friend from Germany

HM Queen Elizabeth passed away in September 2022 and the BBC cancelled the Last Night of the Proms - at time when we needed to feel patriotic and proud of our country’s history.

It was one fine March morning I bid New Orleans adieu And I took the road to Jackson town, my fortune to renew. I cursed all foreign money, no credit could I gain, Which filled me heart with longing for the lakes of Ponchartrain. I stepped on board of a railroad car beneath the morning sun, I rode the rods till evening and I laid me down again. All strangers there no friends to me till a dark girl towards me came And I fell in love with my Creole girl by the lakes of Ponchartrain. I said, “Me pretty Creole girl, me money here’s no good, If it weren’t for the alligators, I’d sleep out in the wood.” “You’re welcome here, kind stranger, from such sad thoughts refrain, For me Mammy welcomes strangers by the lakes of Ponchartrain. She took me into her Mammy’s house, and treated me right well. The hair upon her shoulders in jet black ringlets fell. To try and paint her beauty, Im sure twould be in vain, So handsome was my Creole girl by the lakes of Ponchartrain. I asked her if she’d marry me. She said that ne’er could be For she had got a lover and he was far at sea. She said that she would wait for him and true she would remain Till he’d return to his Creole girl on the lakes of Ponchartrain. Its fare thee well, me Creole girl, I never may see you more. I’ll neer forget your kindness in the cottage by the shore And at each social gathering, a flowing bowl I’ll drain And I’ll drink a health to my Creole girl by the lakes of Ponchartrain.

A talented man in touch with his soul..........................................................to capture the essence of a song is not easy to do but Paul does it seemingly with ease. I don't think they know who wrote these words but they think it was during the American civil war where I can only imagine pain, misery, confusion and conflicting emotions were everyday occurrences. I can almost feel this man's weary soul crying out for the gentle human touch of love and kindness in a mad depressing world. Of course we can only imagine and it will likely be far far away from the actual misery he and thousands endured.

What are the lyrics to ‘Rule Britannia’? Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never will be slaves. When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: (Chorus) The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish great and free: The dread and envy of them all. (Chorus) Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak. (Chorus) Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame; All their attempts to bend thee down Will but arouse thy generous flame, But work their woe and thy renown. (Chorus) To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine; All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles, thine. (Chorus) The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coasts repair. Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned, And manly hearts to guard the fair. (Chorus) Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never will be slaves.

September 1986, in Dublin, on our Honeymoon, we were walking along a pedestrian mall when we heard Paul’s song “The Island” from outdoor speakers attached to a record store. We went right in and bought it, and have been Brady fans ever since. Our 38th Anniversary this year, and Paul’s voice still resonates for us of those glory days.

Thank you Paul!! ❤ Un saludo desde Bilbao, en el País Vasco,

Very effective. And the "No war" signs in the crowd chime in counterpart with the message. I have to say that Ukraine's resistance captures this spirit and so do other nations like the people of Myanmar resisting tyranny of a brutal military. This cannot erase the sins of Empire but neither can noble aspiration be reduced to shame.

Was roofing in Oregon in the mid-80s when the album version of this tune came over the local radio. I almost killed myself flying down the ladder to call the station and find at who/what it was. Went that afternoon to the record shop and the owner ordered "Welcome here kind stranger" for me and the LP came a few weeks later. That was 36 years ago!! The whole album is amazing and I still have it.... but this song is the standout. Thank you Mr. Brady for sharing your otherworldly artistry, it has meant alot to me.

In the Uk there is no need to check the property via an independent lawyer/expert? Bad habits = bad results.

In UK lawyer acting on behalf of purchaser automatically checks title, mortgages, etc. The lawyer does not have to be specifically instructed to do so. Many lawyers will tell you that the laws in Cyprus are the same as the UK - they are NOT. (Cyprus land law is based on the old Ottoman law.)
