Loving this outstanding display of patriotism from across the pond. Don't let the forces of darkness take it away. These displays of tradition and love of country are needed now in Britain and America more than ever. Peace and love to our mother country and God Save The Queen !! 🇺🇸🇬🇧
This performance was amazing. I arrived in London June 1989. This was the next Proms. Wonderful to remember it.
This 1990 rendition is undoubtedly one of the best Rule Britannia performances at a Last Night of the Proms ever! I well remember watching it live at the time. Absolutely brilliant!
Outstanding...from U.S.A. Rule Britannia!
And the BBC wants to remove this from the Last Night of the Proms! That will never, ever happen.

A patriotic song so powerful and stirring that even Canadian, Japanese, Chinese, German, and Italian flags had to join in the wave.

Let's not forget this little extravaganza is paid for by the British public, through the hated bbc tax and now (2023) the only flag you'll see, is the loathed EEC flag. Such is the contempt held for the British by the bbc elites.
This version is extraordinary for many reasons. THe audience the fuller longer version and lets not forget. These two singers. They are absolutely singing nthier hearts and throats out to that enormous hall. Murray is doing her best to sing over this oddly larger orchestra with some higher lines. Garrett is doing her most with the higher soprano line and charming variations on the melody.. But really this orchestra is literally knocking them almost over. In fact it adds to the sea faring , naval aspect of Britain. Look and you can see the ocean's waves! With Murray and Garrett at the helm! A very passionate night for sure. Overwhelming. Brava!!

Lesley Garrett. What a woman. Goosebumps.
This is epic, those ladies gave it socks! Bravo
I am an American, and I love patriotic music. I am also of English descent and I LOVE this performance. I no longer owe allegiance to the Crown (haven't for nearly 400 years), but I LOVE this performance. The Mezzo performance is a heart-stopper, and the soprano performance is outstanding. The audience is great too!

Beautifully sung. It is really hard to sing like her
I love the patriotism displayed. So unique in this world.
The best rendition I've heard yet, great.
A classic performance that will test the trials of time.
I remember I watched this Last Night on german television (yes, indeed german television (N3) broadcast the Last Night of the Proms for years) when I was 18, and I was very impressed of the performance and the athmosphere! Rule Britannia!... at least the waves... greetings from a friend from Germany

I'm used to sopranos singing Bel Canto. This was really delivered Con Belto. There were no pigeons roosting on the Albert Hall roof that night.
Played and sung with such pride. So sad what has happened in 25 years.

1. When Britain first, at Heaven's command Arose from out the azure main; This was the charter of the land, And guardian angels sang this strain: "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 2. The nations, not so blest as thee, Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall; While thou shalt flourish great and free, The dread and envy of them all. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 3. Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful, from each foreign stroke; As the loud blast that tears the skies, Serves but to root thy native oak. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 4. Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame: All their attempts to bend thee down, Will but arouse thy generous flame; But work their woe, and thy renown. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 5. To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine: All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles thine. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." 6. The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coast repair; Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crown'd, And manly hearts to guard the fair. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves."
Anne Murray - quite superb here - was/is one of the most underrated 20th century British singers, while she worked several times I think with none other than Karajan. Great to hear this piece sung here as a duet, too.

American here. My understanding of the issue is that the lyrics of this anthem are painful to particular groups and individuals, according to the Big Brother Channel, therefore no longer shall rule Britannia be sung, hmmm! Is it really the lyric about (shhhh I can’t say it here if I do you won’t see it) but most of you know what I mean, is it really that portion of the song that’s the problem or is it the lyrics about the “tyrants and tyranny” and the unwillingness of the British people to “bend over” the real lyrical issue, hmmm. Just my thoughts, aloha from California.

I time travel. One can see boards with "Stop the war in the Gulf" at 2:06. What happened with all thouse years?!
What are the lyrics to ‘Rule Britannia’? Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never will be slaves. When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: (Chorus) The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish great and free: The dread and envy of them all. (Chorus) Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak. (Chorus) To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine; All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles, thine. (Chorus) The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coasts repair. Blest isle! with matchless beauty crowned, And manly hearts to guard the fair. (Chorus) Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never will be slaves.

No, I think the subtitles are out of courtesy to American viewers.
Very effective. And the "No war" signs in the crowd chime in counterpart with the message. I have to say that Ukraine's resistance captures this spirit and so do other nations like the people of Myanmar resisting tyranny of a brutal military. This cannot erase the sins of Empire but neither can noble aspiration be reduced to shame.
