    I know I'm always throwing book recommendations at you, but no one else I know read "unhinged women" books! Anyways, How to be Eaten by (can't remember) was amazing. It's a lit fiction, but it's like final girls support group, but modern Grimm's fairy tale characters. I don't know how else to explain it, but it was definitely unique.

    That was my first Dennis Cooper book and I liked it a lot! Have you read Frisk? I read it right after and although I didn’t like it as much, it was good too. Very similar vibe. I hadn’t realised it was part of a series before watching this video so I’ll be reading the rest too, thank you! 🩷

    i picked up this book on a whim while on a vacation purely because the bookstore that i was visiting had an offer going on where i could pick up two books for the price of one, my original purchase being Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. i want to apologise to Murakami for daring to think that such garbage can belong in the same bookshelf.

    "The crown of my head needs to go" conjures up an interesting mental image. "The Stepford Wives" movie is on youtube. Uploaded by several different people. It's from 1975. It's good, perhaps better now than it was back in '75. Believable characters, good dialogue, everybody is understandable. Can recommend. No idea about the book, didn't know it was so small.

    Wow . . . I can't believe you haven't heard of Stepford Wives. I would call it a disturbing book, for sure. If you like it, there two movies, but definitely watch the older one. I hate to be negative when everyone else has loved it, but I thought The God of the Woods was pretty boring. There was only one likable character and everyone else was just lying all the time. The ending was hard for me to believe. It kind of reminded me of my experience with The Thirteenth Tale.

    Just to emphasize my point the main characters name is Steven which could be respelled as Stephen who is a faithful and devout man of god. Television is God to Steven in this interpretation. Its the burning bush of light. Cripps is likely the closest to Satan because he was able to sway Stephen onto the dark path allowing his torment to continue. The Guernsey cow is The Red Heffer. Lucy is the coming of the great plague in her body or Saint Lucy herself, either way she see's a sickness across the world that others cannot. I'm not 100% on what the Hag represents but the others seem to fit the bill so closely that when I figure it out it'll be more obvious. The book pretty much spells out these exact situations of the false messiah when Steven is telling them "I will teach you things you have never known" and other words to get them riled up while the red heffer is basically angry and not participating in the false messiah's words. It gets a little muddy but specifically it becomes obvious when Steven again false into a depression for three straight days and "rises on the fourth day" that's when the words of god or in this television are finally coming clear once again to him. There's a lot of other stuff I'm missing but the summary is that the author has written an extreme version of a retelling from the Bible most likely here at least some parts here or there. If that isn't the case then the guy has to be inspired by those things. Another important detail is that he doesnt go much into description of random things you'd normally see in a splatterpunk book. He doesnt talk about the smell of feces like ever. He does like once or twice but doesnt go into much detail, he spends more time detailing the things around him. He doesnt talk much about the guts or intestines, he just describes it with the word. That might be limitation of the writers capabilities itself or just that the detail that is important is that its the intestines more so the things around the scene. He describe the rain as if washing away the sinners (also a bible reference) The torrential rain destroys the home of Steven and he simply watches tv again as if looking for a sign of what to do to which he receives no answer and his home is destroyed and as described in the book "As if god himself cut it in half with a knife" leaving him homeless. I know this is a lot to read as well but I just want to put into context that I think that this book was trying to go for something here albeit maybe in a semi hamfisted way at times.

  • @ice_cube8302
    @ice_cube830210 күн бұрын

    So I just finished the book. Had a discussion with my partner about it. My best take away from this is that it's a heavy draw from the story of the false messiah. There's too much going on here that makes it not a coincidence. Like when Criggs dies he doesnt actually seem to mind it. If anything he's satisified with what his fate is and what Steven does. The cows eating the flesh scene is pretty much a "eat of my flesh". There's a lot here that basically points as a dark splatter punk retelling of the story of the false messiah.

  • @BooneCabal

    I've read a few books by Edward Lee and wrath James White. I would say the best splatter punk novel is resurrectionist. I've heard good things about the WASP factory too.
