Are the shock cable connections at the controller and the fork permanently connected or break-away? With that much open cable slack in the front I could see a branch getting between the bike and the cable and ripping it right off. If that were to happen, then is it RIP for the controller without a shop fix?
Is Not an XC bike,..... It is a Down Country bike!! Not the same.. :(
That’s why it’s the XC bike for people who wear knee pads.
Rad shooting and riding!
Thanks! Zach Clayton makes the POV footage look really fast.
Great trails😮! Nice bike and review😊
Thanks! 👍
@bikers edge ,does all sl occam come with carbon frames?
No. The H models have alloy frames.
What suspension settings do you recommend on the Rail 29? Wish Revel offered a set-up guide like other companies
I usually start by getting sag right and then getting a ballpark feel for damper settings. I’ll make changes for the first little while until I get it dialed.
where are you riding?
Mostly Park City
Job well done with this review! I am considering replacing my rear derailleur (Shimano XT 12sp) on my current ride - 2023 Intense Tracer 279 (Pro build) with current componentry as follows: Cassette: Shimano SLX 12 sp. 10-51t Chain: Shimano SLX 12sp Cranks: e*Thirteen Helix Base 30t 170mm Chainguide: e*Thirteen Vario Guide & Bash Looking for feedback as to whether or not to do the conversion to the GX AXS and ditch the Shimano XT 12sp rear derailleur and shifter. All feedback welcomed!
I don’t think I there’s really any performance benefit with doing an AXS conversion. It’s cool stuff though. Just not totally necessary in my opinion.
@@bikersedgeMakes sense, but I didn't hear you say it would or would not work, and that's ok as I'm looking for all feedback and I will decide based on the feedback provided by others. But what about from a maintenance perspective, any advantage? No cable stretch is one advantage I can think of. No adjustments once the initial adjustment is set? Of course having a dead battery would be a disadvantage.
It would work with the setup you described as long as you use the older type AXS and not a current T Type. There’s a bit of a maintenance benefit to AXS but it’s not purely set and forget. There will still be adjustments to make over time like with a cable derailleur. I went back to cable on my bikes because of the dead battery thing. I’m not good at remembering to charge batteries.
@@bikersedge when you say "the older type AXS", can you drop a part number? (e.g. . GX ??)
Just not Transmission.
In Europe there are opinions that in size L and XL frame is very weak and you end up with broken one. Smaller sizes are good.
I’d argue that the size that fits you is the best size.
@@bikersedge What I meant was that according to rumors spotted in Europe there is opinion that smaller frame sizes are Ok what means they are not breaking down under the heavy use condition.
Ah gotcha. Yeah frame size can have an impact on durability.
I think this will be my next bike….if/when I have the space & scratch to add to my quiver. I’m looking for something more apt at park days, but still able to be pedaled for laps without a lift.
This would certainly fit the bill.
I had a 2023 Rocky Mtn Altitude 4.0 . It required a lot more rider energy than a Brose, Bosch or Yamaha to get the most out of it. The biggest drawback was the battery charging system overcharged the battery and the battery exploded and burned everything in my garage to ashes. Rocky Mountain seemed to want to help, but in the end they just wanted to get the burned bike out of my possession and pretend it never happened. They hired a bunch of lawyers to threaten me from telling this true event. I feel a duty to warn potential buyers of the very real danger of keeping a Rocky Mountain bike indoors. The damage to my home and property is over 350k, and I am lucky to be alive. Don't take the risk with a Rocky Mountain E-MTB. It is not worth it.
Damn. That’s really bad. Sorry to hear it.
Wished it came with alloy frame for starting xc racer
Yeah would be nice. I’d argue that someone getting into MTB would be better suited on a trail bike anyway.
Just saw this (3 yrs later) after buying a YT Capra MX 2 days ago and trying it out at Deer Valley today. Coming from a full 29er (who's rear traingle I just shattered), it's a completely different animal. This. Bike. Rips. It's everything you liked 3 years ago in a bike that was co-designed by YT and Ohlins to do exactly what you were hoping manufacturers would. It occurred to me that the more we ride mtb like motocross, the more our bikes resemble lighter-weight versions of them. MX has always been mullet...for the same reasons (descending) that we are now doing mullets in mtb. The more I ride mtb, the more similar it feels to riding MX.
I ride up there and freaking love it! Thanks for your hard work at making and maintaining the trails. I'll make sure to donate
Love it!
Awesome review mate. Was recommended these by a friend who swears by them, and did a KZread search for a review….perfect and really informative. Went for the following: FRONT: Continental Argotal Downhill Soft Compound Foldable 29" MTB Tyre 29 x 2.4" Black/Black REAR: Continental Kryptotal Rear Downhill Soft Compound Foldable 29" MTB Tyre 29 x 2.4" Black/Black All ready and waiting to fit for this years ARD ROCK SPORT ENDURO here in UK 🇬🇧 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Awesome! Glad you like the tires and the video.
But can it be built to be XC race ready? Its geo is closer now to new XC race bikes.
The original model year was more XC than this with a Sid fork and shock. Should work just fine.
This review is the reason why I bought Heckler and it's amazing.
Glad you’re enjoying the videos and the bike!
If these had been a thing when I was younger, I might have seriously considered bicycling to work.
@bikersedge I’m trying to decide between the Spur and a Ripley AF. I live in St. George and ride here 99% of the time. Help me decide
Both would be great on the more XC trails down there. I think the Ripley AF will be a little bit more forgiving when you’re in the bigger terrain down there.
Thanks for the advice
It's not just the sweet spot that's important, it's the seat angle too. As they get steeper, for every 1 degree you lose approximately 1cm of cockpit reach - the roominess between your seat and your handlebars. I'm looking at the new Nicolai Saturn 16 in XL and XXL, compared to my Santa Cruz Megatower in XXL. I'm 6'6' with even leg/torso length and, despite the Saturn in XL being almost identical to the Megatower in XXL, i'm thinking it'll be best to go XXL on the Saturn, as the steeper seat tube angle will push me closer to the bars. I also have an early Trail Pistol that has a steeper SA than the Megatower and I have the seat slammed as far back as it goes, run a 50mm stem and still feel cramped compared to the Megatower.
More where to ride videos please!
Can do.
Who else love the metric system?
Yes thank god for externally routed brake lines 🙏 Please keep doing this.
You and I might be in the vast minority here. But we’re right.
That first guy was wearing his sister’s shorts…weird.
They’re fast. Less drag.
Have you looked at bar rise as a factor? It really does depend on the rider I think the key is what each thing does because even if someone is the same size they may want it different. It would be cool if you could rent some kit for the this purpose at a reasonable price. Then determine what sizes would work best for you on given bike. That way you would have a really good idea what to buy to optimize the setup for your wants and needs. There would still be some variables that would effect it such as weight and actual fit on the components you buy in the end but, it maybe close enough to make choice that's best for you.
Keep it up!
That's the plan!
Side note. I run Conti TKC 80 tires on my dual sport motorcycle and they are epic on road/off road/highway/deep water/loose rock/granite. Continental knows tires.
Why weren't there any charts? Seriously though, looks like a wonderful place!
I should have busted out the sharpie and yellow paper to draw some janky maps or something.
Right on guys, keep doing what you’re doing. 👍
🤘🤘
Let's hope they stay ebike (class1)friendly and don't turn into summit county for single track use.
Fingers crossed!
So great!!
👍👍
Love it, thanks for the community support Biker’s Edge!
We’re about more than just selling bikes! And selfishly we like having more good trails.
More trail center reviews please! Throw in a few restaurants and family activities as well to help us plan trips lol.
Great idea. I can try to work more of that in.
Eden Valley Trails does amazing work. Thanks BE for all you do to support them!
Yes they do. Loved the trails up there.
That’s awesome Connor. Love to see bike shops and local trail associations linking up and helping create that MTB community support system.
Thanks! We always to try to contribute where we can.
Sooooooo. An Orbea commercial with a sprinkling of info about the area. 🤦🏼♂️
Sooooo. A bike shop that's trying to sell bikes. 🙊
Of course we want to sell bikes but we are clearly doing more than just that.
Watch the video. it's about supporting local trail building. The bike has a small part.
@@awright16789 I think some folks just like complaining on the internet. It’s a little funny that we get called out after donating $50k to local trails. 😂
Great review. Also.. damn it.. I think this is the bike to replace my Process 111.
Wow, that squirrels nest of cables hanging off the handlebars 😳
Yeah. Can’t say I’m a fan of that. Non wireless drivetrain XC bikes tend to have a lot of cables with the lockouts.
Literally just bought this bike yesterday for 3999.
Enjoy!
Awesome review. So based on that I went and bought the MX version. I’m always into sportier more aggressive dirt bikes and to me it’s all about turning , breaking and acceleration. They are the words I kept hearing for the MX so I bought it ! I absolutely love it ! Thanks guys 👍🏼👍🏼 It’s all about your style and type of tracks. And I prefer tight switchbacks and poppy tracks. Definitely the more technical the better. I’m not into the big jumps.
Glad you love it!
Has anyone ridden a Spur with the original RS SID shock and compared with the Fox DPS? I have a SID shock and Fox 34 130mm. I don't want to give up any climbing efficiency, but I would take a little improvement in shock absorption. Seems like the SID is easily overwhelmed in bigger terrain.
I’ve ridden it with both. I don’t think there’s all that much difference between them either in climbing or descending performance. I don’t think you’re going to get noticeably better bump compliance or worse pedal efficiency from the DPS. If you went to a significantly larger volume shock you might start to notice a bit. But for the most part, frame kinematics dictate the lions share of the suspension feel.
Great video! Was all this tubeless or with tubes?
All tubeless.
What wristband do you use on your Apple Watch? Looked comfy
Not sure to be honest. Something cheap from Amazon.
Outstanding work. I'm going through the same testing. Although I'm on a much longer stem 90mm on my Supercaliber that comes stock with 80mm. This is just an excellent piece. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Great video! I think maybe do the same thing, but individually test the effect of the components. Like you said you were thinking that the tires had the greatest effect. It would be great to see what difference it would be to just change the tires vs the suspension etc as well. This way you can also feel exactly the difference of the rear shock!
That’s a great idea.
Now THAT is a gorgeous looking emtb
Does not look bad at all.
This vs Bronson?
Not sure. Haven’t ridden a Bronson yet.
Interesting test. I have done something similar recently and it appears that it really does not matter what is on the rear of the tire for uphill climbing (enduro or XC). It is only the front tire that affects the time.
That's very interesting. I'd imagine the rear has a bigger impact as its the tire driving the bike.
@@bikersedge I am going to do some more tests. The tires I am using on the rear are an Ardent and an Assegai MaxGrip, so big difference. Same two tires on the front also Ardent and Assegai MaxGrip.
I was able to demo one this weekend and I couldn't agree more with what you said. The GRIP is insane. I cleared several tech climbs that I often spin out or get bucked on, but it for sure didn't feel efficient. It wasn't bad, but the grip factor outweighed any issues with it not feeling quick on the climbs. It was also one of the quietest bikes I've ridden. I really loved it. If I was going to the bike park more than 3 times a year I would buy one. It did feel "fun" still but a little heavier than I would like. Unfortunately, I pedal too much for this version to make sense.
I had the Spur and wanted something more trail and plush for my rides on medium chunky trails by my house, so I got this bike because bigger fork and slacker head tube. It came with the Fox Live Valve and had a rough time on it. Now I got rid of Live Valve and put Fox Factory new grip X and float on it and the front end still feels harsh (a little better) but Im still frustrated I just want a comfortable plush bike. Should I get a Ripmo or something? What bikes feel plush and damp?
You’re not really going to find a “plush” bike in the 120mm category. The thing that makes them quick and zippy uphill is the same thing that keeps them from feeling plush and comfy on the DH. It’s a matter of priorities. If plush is your number one priority then get a big bike with a lot of travel and an active suspension platform.
@@bikersedge Thanks! what bikes have you ridden that feel plush and comfortable?
@@user-rj9ui3sz8u altitude, Megatower, sb160, sentinel. Keep in mind those will pay a huge penalty on the climbs and will handle very differently. They’re big bikes designed for rough and fast descents.
@@bikersedge Yeah those are big bikes but I'm addicted to damp plush feeling on the trail. Will Exo+ casing tires smooth out the trail more?
@@user-rj9ui3sz8u not a ton. Technically you can run a bit less pressure in those but not enough to make a little bike feel “plush”
