I know this is going sound horrid; however, having the audio hard panned to the right at the beginning makes me want to scream. Cheers all and thank you for the great talk.

Haidt would not say it - but it seemed to me he thinks some university presidents should be fired - not moved within the university - but fired and sent on their way. I would also speculate that he believes the "studies" should be eliminated and those professors also sent on their way. But I doubt this will happen in more than a few places. Rot is difficult to correct in a tree - you either cut it down or just wait for it to fall under its own weight.

Students in high school need to take Socratic Logic early and then those skills need to be reinforced in all the humanities classes until graduation. Teach them how to argue correctly and how to identify and challenge fallacious arguments. Then they might understand what they have to do in college to think critically and effectively.

Social media is no longer "social"...it's now hypnotical. The point of it is to keep people glued to the screen and their eyes fixed on whatever is being presented and ears attentive to what is being said by...whomever. Jonathan's book goes great with the mindfulness workbook called 30 Days Without Social Media by Harper Daniels.

His "truth versus social justice" represents a biased frame and faux dichotomous thinking. Most of his talk is deconstructing the alt-left excesses of DEI that have tarnished the US brand of universities but not the alt-right fundamentalism of disinformation that is destroying Democracies. Which is the greatest threat to US democracy, alt-left vs alt-right?

On the question of "who won the election", I suggest that one side is perfectly happy with the lack of agreement. They do not want a republic and would be deliriously happy if the country became a one-party state. The governor of New York as much as said so during the previous election. What we need to understand is one side has as their objective the destruction of everything that is traditional about the country. Their vision for the future? Hey, whatever. Just not what it is now. My bet is, they will get their wish because that is where we are headed, and rapidly. And nobody will like it. Douglas pointed out that we are the only Western country in which people can't agree on who won a national election. This, Douglas, is "American exceptionalism" in the 21st century.

They are using the same hyperbolic language that makes everything a wedge issue (by which I mean every statement is "the most" and if you seek to discuss or problem solve you are now the enemy.

All of these perceptions this person points out, difference between 2013 and 2016, structural stupidity has nothing to do with left or right or academic content, its exclusively came about bc of our changes of mediums of communication, from print dominated culture to electronic, and in particular social media which simplifies, stupidifies all aspects of identity, critical thinking and culture. In short, this guy is missing the boat about the actual reasons causing these cultural, university and mental (health) changes.

I wish Haidt would study the effect social media has on adults. What the kids can't handle is the re-emergence of racism and bigotry and stupidity by their parents, grandparents, and political leaders, who justify their racism, bigotry, and stupidity in the name of both "religious liberty" and "free speech."

Overall very enlightening, but, see an issue here, the meaning of life, J.H. suggests movement, filling a void. I suggest reproduction, without reproduction no voids would be filled, all living things simply live to reproduce first, which then supports evolution, evolution supports development to be able to fill such voids.

What happened in 2012? Obama got re-elected. That’s not just a joke - he started emphasizing racial and identity politics in his second term, using race more heavily and pressuring schools in ideology. Left wing nuttiness became quite the fashion trend.

Honest? True? American universities? That’s a joke - they’ve been lying in a downward spiral since the late 1980s. Yes it got really bad after Trump was elected and the far left lost their minds, but Allen Bloom rang the alarm bell in 1987, the Closing of the American Mind.

Now that we are in the midst of a horrible genocide, have you thought, Mr Haidt, to mention how universities failed the pro-Palestinian students and labeled them as antisemites? I do agree that Ms Gay should be removed but not for the reasons she was removed. She should be removed because she failed to correct the propaganda that pro-Palestinian students were calling for the killing of Jews. We all know this is not the case. Just because one or 2 people did, you cannot label the entire movement as such. Why aren’t you saying that these students are against genocide. For you to just talk about October 7, and ignore mentioning all other students is hypocrisy. I used to respect you when I thought you were truly objective and truth-seeking even when it comes to Israel. This is when you know who is truly truth-seeking vs truth-seeking with the exception of when it comes to Israel. How can I continue to respect you when you’re ignoring a whole genocide, and focusing on some pictures that were taken down? I can no longer listen to your talks the same way. You lost me. the saddest part is that you are talking about the loss of trust in academia, and you’re doing the same as those who made us lose the faith in academia

He makes it sound like the right and left are equally responsible for this state of affairs but the left is 50x more guilty than the right and the right is 50x more marginalized. He also contradicted himself, first saying lack of viewpoint diversity is a problem and then at the end of his talk, saying the exact opposite.
