    Thank you. I was nearly going to do the Black Basecoat option. I'm going to give this a try as all my other napoleonics are also contrast painted.

    Your lad has got some seriously good skills - dad is teaching him right!!! I’ve always held that, given the choice, I’d much rather play on a beautifully landscaped table like this with unpainted miniatures than on a table with terrible terrain and the best painted miniatures. Well done indeed!!

    Great looking layout. Would love to play some Bolt Action on terrain like that.

    I use thin satin ribbon to hinge doors, seems to hold up well but you may need to add a covering to disguise the cloth (I use thick card for the door with a thin card on the ribbon side to hide it)

    Since retiring I have been making up toy soldier sets to give away, 1:32 for 3-7 and 1:72 for 7 and up. For the 54mm sets they get about 30-40 soldiers plus some terrain, for 20mm its 100+ troops plus a couple of tanks, mortars, medium machine guns and artillery pieces for each side, all based on a space about four feet by two feet (the basic dining table or bedroom floor). The terrain makes a real difference so roofs are removable and the buildings have semi-detailed interiors, as do the bunkers. As the lad said it's about creating stories but wargamers tend to focus on the game. Nothing wrong with that but it means anything not in the rules is superfluous, which is why modern toy soldier sets seldom have stretcher bearers although looking at newsreels they were ubiquitous. Some of my WW2 sets come with a complete regimental aid post and of course lots of 'supplies' (handy as an objective but also useful for hiding behind). I supply a thick set of notes so the whole set is information-rich (more than once the Dad has held off on giving the set to the youngster so they can bone up on the notes). They might as well learn something in their play. The main problem is that the play can run on for days or even weeks and 'I want my dining table back' is a real issue. I make everything I can, so all the scenery is cardboard (2mm greyboard is really useful, and strong but 5mm foamcore is better for ruins, pillboxes and bunkers) with papier mashe hills over cardboard formers, hedges from door mat dressed up with teased out pan scrub and flock. The trees are 'safety trees', twisted up pipe cleaners with teased out pan scrub and flock, so if Mum comes in carrying a tray and trips over the anti tank defences they will just cushion her fall rather than skewer her like pungi sticks. The kids seem to play with them in the same way we did back in the 50s and 60s and some do go on to wargame. It might benefit a wargamer to try a little 'playing with the soldiers' to reconnect with the story side of things, or put together a set to give away to someone less well off using the odds and ends they have, but do make the terrain as well, it does matter.

    Well done to the lad, he’s got a good grasp of geography! It adds so much to a game I’d just a little logic is applied to the table, even if you don’t have the amount of terrain that you’ve got there.

    What an excellent set up! Saving this as an example for when I start putting my Napoleonic peninsular battlefields up! Both sides are gonna be struggling with lines of sight in a lot of places, which was true in real life... very, very impressive. Hope you're gonna post the battle cos you've got a new subscriber!

    I note also on the Hovels model, there is another building where the balustrade wall meets the main complex, but not on the Sarrissa. Is this an easy fix ? Also what Balustrade wall would go with the Sarissa ( thats the one I have!) and is there a mat some one does as a base for the Sarissa, with the ornamental gardens on etc?

  • @trimontiumhobbies1886
    @trimontiumhobbies188611 ай бұрын

    hey David yeah on the hovels model, what I think is the "Farmer's house" extends into the parterre garden a wee bit, i could add a wee extension on so the, still to be thought about, ballistrade butts up to it similar to the hovels one. As for a bespole mat for the sarrisa kit, im not too sure but i wouldnt think so..

    Should look at textured wall paper for roads and paving, might make life easier than scoring the mat

    The Hovels models were painted and based by Dennis who owns the business, he only agreed to do it if I collected it as it was too big to ship. I’ve sadly lost the North Gate but I’m planning on replacing it if. I believe it is scaled for 20-25mm figures. Great video Ian 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
