    Would you recommend a double pane with low E coatings over a triple pane without coatings in a cold climate? Is the coating were the moneys at in terms of solar heat gain in terms of energy efficiency?

    I had okna 800 series installed last year and so far it has been excellent for north east winter but Jeff is correct that it is very bulky. The windows are great functionally but the bulkiness of the design decreases a lot of glass space and not as aesthetically pleasing as other brands. At first i liked the look of the frame design but i think i would have preferred something simpler if it means having more glass. Overall i am happy that my home is warmer and the windows are definitely top quality and great on their features.

    The other problem with gas is that it expands when it goes to higher sea levels and contracts at lower sea levels , you can't get it put in a window unless it stays the same elevation . This is why windows are sent with breather tubes in the ig units . You can put the gas in at the job site . If you did have gas in the window at 1500 feet of sea level and went to 6000 feet, you probably wouldnt be able to open it ,the locking jamb would most likely hit the glass because it expanded like a bag of chips . On the other hand if you put gas in at 6000 and went to 1500 feet of sea level the glass would suck itself in and concave and some even touch in the middle .

  • @HoustonWindowExperts
    @HoustonWindowExpertsКүн бұрын

    Thank you for watching and for your comment. You do make a fair point, but I've never seen one expand to the point where you could not open the window. Glass would shatter if it swell that much! Mini window companies give you the opportunity to select the elevation where you will be installing the windows. They will fill the argon gas accordingly.

    Thanks for the video on ProVia Endure. Also thanks for the recommendation of a local installer to me that carries and installs them. I have narrowed down my choice of vinyl double hung replacement windows to the ProVia Endure and the Okna Insul Tec 500 which appear to be similar in quality. However, it seems that the Okna 500 warranty is quite a bit better than the ProVia Endure. The Okna offers a buyer's lifetime plus transferable to 1 subsequent owner warranty on the glass, vinyl and hardware. Whereas the Endure offers only a buyer's lifetime warranty on glass and hardware (non transferable). So if the original buy get's "hit by a beer truck" the day after installation, then there is no longer any warranty on glass and hardware of the ProVia Endure windows. This doesn't seem to show much confidence in the Endure's window's quality versus the Okna 500. I'd like for there to be a window warranty for my spouse, children and/or any subsequent buyer. What are your thoughts on warranties and should warranty be a significant deciding factor? Thanks again for all your great advice. Doug

  • @HoustonWindowExperts
    @HoustonWindowExpertsКүн бұрын

    Thank you for watching and for your question. Obviously, the best warranty is the one you will never need. Typically, window companies have only offered a 20-year warranty on their products. But back around 20 years ago, when the market was getting pretty tight and competitive, company started creating these amazing warranties. The truth is, the average homeowner only lives in her home for 7 and 1/2 years. When company say they offer a double lifetime warranty, that's nice to have, but it's very likely that you will never use it. I would be more concerned about the quality of the installation, then the quality of the window and the warranty. A great window that is installed poorly is going to have many issues that will not be covered by the warranty of the manufacturer.

    Agree with you that Marvin makes great product though I think its a bit of a stretch to say they are far and above everyone else. The Pella Reserve line is very comparable to Marvins Ultimate. Pella does not offer Architect series anymore and anyone buying from a local branch can use Reserve. The roll form is used to hit different customers budgets and is only used on Lifestyle Series, Pella also are the only ones offering Lifetime coverage on the wood and glass for their wood lines.

    Thank you for sharing your opinion. I have Pella windows in my home. I did not put them there, they were there when I moved in. Since they were built prior to the extended warranty that exists today, I did not have the same luxury that current homeowners would. I've had to replace 17 windows in the past 5 years due to seal failure.

    Yikes! That can be a problem. The smaller the window, the smaller the target. However, if you do get a window hit by a golf ball, I would go with a triple strength glass. You could also have it tempered which would make it even stronger.

    What material and patio door configuration (slider, French door, or one fixed panel with single hinged door are the options) would you recommend for a south facing coastal location? We get a good bit of wind and brackish/salt spray in storms and the door is in the sun most of the day.

  • @HoustonWindowExperts
    @HoustonWindowExpertsКүн бұрын

    If you live in a coastal application, you're probably going to have a more limited selection of products that choose from due to the storm requirements. Based on what you're telling me, I don't think I would be interested in a French door. I believe that any door that has more glass, and less frame, will be easier to keep clean.

  • @HoustonWindowExperts
    @HoustonWindowExpertsКүн бұрын

    Most manufacturers will not make a single panel lighter than 4 ft. If you want a two panel door that is 12 ft wide, that means that your operational panel will be 6 ft wide. This will limit you to a very few brands. The two that come to mind are Western Systems and Euro-Wall. There are a few others that can do it but I would avoid some of them because of a lack of quality. I would completely avoid Fleetwood windows and doors.

    The pins have been tested and exceed the forced entry standards. In fact, in testing the pins, they found that it would literally damage the awl they used to try to remove them. Obviously, if the Mafia wants in, they'll find a way in. My guess is that they'd probably find a softer target than this door. By the way, even with the pins removed, the multipoint lock still retains the door closed. I used to be a Fleetwood dealer. I dropped them due to quality issues and a terrible attitude from the ownership when you needed warranty support. They ALWAYS blame the dealer, builder, or installer. They never own their own stuff. I'd avoid them at all cost. If you want a superior product that compares to Fleetwood, check out Western.
