    What a sound! May I ask what’s scale is this guitar? 650 mm? Thanks

  • @WulfinLieske
    @WulfinLieske5 ай бұрын

    Dear Mike, great you enjoy La Leona. The scale length is 64,8 mm. At Torres time there was no such a thing as “equal temperament” (dividing the octave in 12 equal parts). So what you hear here is a “well terpered guitar”. This makes the sound of chord (incl. open strings) more expressive and individual. Each period and region had its own preferences of sound and intonation. So any tuning is a compromise. In this series with La Leona you have the chance to proof the actual concept in a repertoire spanning from renaissance, classic, romantic to contemporary. May ask for your musical background? Best regards Wulfin

    I very much enjoy your high quality productions. I have your "Guitarra Espanola" CD, I prefer the Torres you played on that mainly due to the basses. The basses on the current one sound rather "loose" or unfocussed by comparison. Currently reading the Romanillos book, its amazing the struggles Torres went through trying to build these instruments and the trouble he had in trying to get good quality wood.

  • @WulfinLieske
    @WulfinLieske5 ай бұрын

    Thanks a lot for this attentive comment! The GUITARRA ESPAÑOLA CD is recorded with the late 1888 SE 113 by Torres which represents the typical Torres which gave ground to Manuel Ramírez/Early Santos Hernández, who copied that type of Torres. (Listen my CD AIRES DE LA GUITARRA with my 1912 Ramírez builds by Santos, now in an Italian collection. The sound concept of LA LEONA, built in 1856, is completely different. A smaller body, with an old-style bridge, a tornavoz, a special bridge-like neck and in cypress create a different sound - it is very balanced and clear with a long sustain, still today. For me the sound has a timeless quality, it is not immediately “Spanish”. Do you play yourself? What kind of guitar do you have? Best wishes from Cologne Wulfin

    Good morning P and thanks for your kind reply. Then I discovered Torres and got my first real vintage Vicente Arias from 1887 or so. Finally Manuel Ramírez 1912, Esteso 1931, several Santos and some very nice contemporary by Fritz Ober and Karl Hermann Schäfer. That’s it. A long path. - what is your repertoire, if I may ask? Hermosa interpretación en una legendaria guitarra! En hora buena maestro Lieske!

  • @WulfinLieske
    @WulfinLieske5 ай бұрын

    Hola Marco, please let me reply in English to your enthusiastic comment. Yes, it is „un hora buena“ that we have an guitar of 163 years of age which has such a deep and poetical message to us today. In the world of the old Cremonese violin making this is nothing new. But in a time of constant innovation in the guitar lutherie it seems to be a bit old-fashioned to be so overwhelmed by such an old box. But if we consider that we can still enjoy Monteverdi, Bach, or Mozart and Milan, Sanz, Sor and Tárrega why shouldn’t we feel touched by the work of a guitar maker from the past, who succeeds to create an instrument of highest aesthetic category such as LA LEONA? The magic of Torres is, as Jose Romanillos once told me, that you hear the pure music, not the construction and materials of the instrument. So finally it is not about good or bad, about taste and preferences but about the the wonder of what music can to to you. This is the reason why you hear me on this channel with LA LEONA frequently. That’s why I created this new series of DIARIES. The other series show me performing with guitars by Santos Hernández, the “Torres of the 20th. century (again Romanillos). Let me know what you think about it. And see you back at the next diaries. All the best for 2024 Wulfin!

    Lieber Soteriologist, ich danke Ihnen für Ihren neuerlichen Kommentar. Es freut mich sehr, dass Ihnen diese erste Produktion der neuen Reihe LA LEONA DIARIES so sehr gefallen hat. Ich hatte gestern eine Diskussion mit einem befreundeten Gitarristen, wo es um die Beurteilung von Instrumenten geht. Ich möchte dies gerne an Sie weitergeben: er unterschied zwischen der physischen (objektiven) Qualität und der spirituellen Kraft, nämlich das, was es mit uns macht. In all den Jahren war es für mich und viele andere immer so, dass die LA LEONA von Antonio de Torres uns eine starke emotionale und künstlerische Botschaft schickt, die sich von der physischen Ebene des reinen Instrumentes vollständig löst, sie geht direkt in unser Herz. Hier geht es also nicht so sehr um Geschmack oder Vorlieben sondern um die Vermählung mit der Musik an sich über all die „objektieven“ Kategorien hinaus. Auf diesem Zenit tummeln sich nur wenige Gitarren - für mich sind das Torres und Santos Hernández. Aber wie sagt man immer so schön: es gehören immer zwei dazu, oder besser noch drei: Instrument, Spieler und der geneigte Hörer. Ich bedanke mich, dass Sie mir dies immer wieder zu verstehen geben, dass Sie ein Teil diese magische Trilogie sind. Nun liegen viele Videos mit Musik und Erläuterungen zu LA LEONA im zwei Wochen Abstand vor Ihnen. Mit herzlichen Grüßen und besten Wünschen für das Neue Jahr! Wulfin Lieske.

    Me again, Flavio, were in a bit of a hurry yesterday. I am really glad, you like these pieces (I know that you are very familiar with this style and did great recordings in that genre!). I have played Henze’s Tennis and parts of both Royal Winter Music and I grew up with the spirit of Webern and Schoenberg around. Still I was challenged write some miniatures in a very condensed style but not too abstract. So I am diving in and out of some historical visions such as the “Españoleta” by Sanz and some polyphonic of Dowland in Sketch No. 1 (combined with whole tone shaped melodies. Or the shortest eight-bar guitar piece, Sketch No. 2, in a Beethoven-like almost rude compressed Motive development. Well and just published No. 3 goes in this rhapsodic dream style which works so well with guitar, pretty romantic finally. So this time a detailed reply to your nice comment. Have a good holiday time and all the best for 2024. Best regards Wulfin

    Hallo Wolfgang, ich freue mich sehr über deine treuen Kommentare. Die Five Sketches sind ganz besondere Werke in meinem Schaffen: sie erforschen einen stilistischen Raum indem es nicht allzu viel Repertoire gibt. Vielleicht Krenek, Henze, Rodney Bennet, Takemitsu… obwohl diese kurzen Stücke sehr dicht und komplex sind so sind sie doch aus dem Geist der Gitarre geboren und liegen trotz aller musikalischen Herausforderungen gut - ich will nicht sagen bequem - auf der Gitarre. Es weht ein bisschen der Geist der Neuen Wiener Schule (Schoemberg, Berg, Webern) durch die Zeilen - damit bin ich u.a. groß geworden… herzliche Grüße und ein Frohes Fest. Guten Rutsch, Wulfin
