Tárrega played on Torres's original Holy Grail, La Leona 1856 FE-04

Музыка

Welcome to La Leona Diaries, a serie of videos developed with the highest level of passion to travel together with you and the mother of all guitars la Leona by Antonio de Torres (Sevilla, 1856).
This serie of 24 episodes is a marriage of exclusive music recordings and interviews in studio quality sound and high end broadcast image quality. In this serie we will travel through the music epoques and discover step by step what makes this instrument so unique and so meaningful for the history of the guitar until today.
In this first video, we start in the romantic epoque, the epoque Leona was built in. I play two preludes from Tárrega, number 12 and number 13.
Enjoy the mother of all guitars, in studio quality.
Cheers,
Wulfin

    Hola Marco, please let me reply in English to your enthusiastic comment. Yes, it is „un hora buena“ that we have an guitar of 163 years of age which has such a deep and poetical message to us today. In the world of the old Cremonese violin making this is nothing new. But in a time of constant innovation in the guitar lutherie it seems to be a bit old-fashioned to be so overwhelmed by such an old box. But if we consider that we can still enjoy Monteverdi, Bach, or Mozart and Milan, Sanz, Sor and Tárrega why shouldn’t we feel touched by the work of a guitar maker from the past, who succeeds to create an instrument of highest aesthetic category such as LA LEONA? The magic of Torres is, as Jose Romanillos once told me, that you hear the pure music, not the construction and materials of the instrument. So finally it is not about good or bad, about taste and preferences but about the the wonder of what music can to to you. This is the reason why you hear me on this channel with LA LEONA frequently. That’s why I created this new series of DIARIES. The other series show me performing with guitars by Santos Hernández, the “Torres of the 20th. century (again Romanillos). Let me know what you think about it. And see you back at the next diaries. All the best for 2024 Wulfin!

    I very much enjoy your high quality productions. I have your "Guitarra Espanola" CD, I prefer the Torres you played on that mainly due to the basses. The basses on the current one sound rather "loose" or unfocussed by comparison. Currently reading the Romanillos book, its amazing the struggles Torres went through trying to build these instruments and the trouble he had in trying to get good quality wood.

    Thanks a lot for this attentive comment! The GUITARRA ESPAÑOLA CD is recorded with the late 1888 SE 113 by Torres which represents the typical Torres which gave ground to Manuel Ramírez/Early Santos Hernández, who copied that type of Torres. (Listen my CD AIRES DE LA GUITARRA with my 1912 Ramírez builds by Santos, now in an Italian collection. The sound concept of LA LEONA, built in 1856, is completely different. A smaller body, with an old-style bridge, a tornavoz, a special bridge-like neck and in cypress create a different sound - it is very balanced and clear with a long sustain, still today. For me the sound has a timeless quality, it is not immediately “Spanish”. Do you play yourself? What kind of guitar do you have? Best wishes from Cologne Wulfin

    @@WulfinLieske Thank-you, I will look for the CD you mention. I'm just a self-taught amateur, started about age 20, 40 years ago now! I have a cedar 2018 Luis Marin (son of Paco Santiago) and a spruce 2006 Paul Fischer TAUT model. The Marin has a very fast response and the Fischer much slower, so they are quite different playing experiences. Despite attending hundereds of guitar concerts over the years I don't recall ever hearing a Torres live. BW P from UK

    Good morning P and thanks for your kind reply. So, I see you have fine instruments - my first real concert guitar (after Yamaha GC-15) was an Antonio Marin in the early 80er, then I played a lot of cedar tops, such as Ruck, Miguel Rodriguez until I had arrived at a 1965 Friederich (CD Adios nonino). Then I discovered Torres and got my first real vintage Vicente Arias from 1887 or so. Finally Manuel Ramírez 1912, Esteso 1931, several Santos and some very nice contemporary by Fritz Ober and Karl Hermann Schäfer. That’s it. A long path. - what is your repertoire, if I may ask? Best regards Wulfin

    @@WulfinLieske That is quite a list! I prefer traditional with rosewood back and sides. I'm not very keen on the sound from lattice guitars. For repertoire I take a few pieces and work on them for some months and then make a point and shoot video (no edits) at a local church as a momento (sometimes put them on you-tube to share with friends). After that I drop them and work on some new pieces. I'm currently working on Gigue from 1st lute suite, Journey into India from Sinbad by Domeniconi, 1st mvt (with backing track) of the Gentilhombre by Rodrigo, and Shenandoah arr Gary Ryan. BW P

Wulfin Lieske.

    What a sound! May I ask what’s scale is this guitar? 650 mm? Thanks

  • @WulfinLieske

    @WulfinLieske

    5 ай бұрын

    Dear Mike, great you enjoy La Leona. The scale length is 64,8 mm. At Torres time there was no such a thing as “equal temperament” (dividing the octave in 12 equal parts). So what you hear here is a “well terpered guitar”. This makes the sound of chord (incl. open strings) more expressive and individual. Each period and region had its own preferences of sound and intonation. So any tuning is a compromise. In this series with La Leona you have the chance to proof the actual concept in a repertoire spanning from renaissance, classic, romantic to contemporary. May ask for your musical background? Best regards Wulfin
