I actually cared about Finn and was ready to see him come out on top against Kylo in that fight. I was and still am thoroughly disappointed that it was given to Rey instead. Finn actually had a whole arc, from a stormtrooper seen as nothing to a hero of the Resistance, he was even the first to ignite and try using that saber in the film. I would’ve been way more emotionally invested in the duel if it’d gone like that.

A WWII carbine or AK47 would be more effective than any of the star wars weapons.

Let's talk about the actual reason they suck now. The directors have ZERO interest in and/or support for creating a GOOD film. The sole concern is pushing propaganda and it's gotten so bad that they've forgotten propaganda is most effective when it's subtle and enjoyable to watch. So they fail at both because we've regressed into full idiocracy.

Ngl I think the only good sequel trilogy fight is Finn vs Kylo in ep7. I mean the setting is actually rly cool and at least for the characters it feels natural (or to the extent they can be with Disney) It makes sense that Finn is kinda shit at lightsaber combat, because he was only a stormtrooper. It kinda feels in character that Kylo would match his level of combat to kinda toy with Finn given his emotional state and arrogance. On top of that it has a decent emotional standpoint. It’s similar to Obi Wan vs Maul in ep1, with Finn knowing that he’s outclassed in every metric yet still fighting to avenge/protect his friend. Idk just felt like the only saber fight in the trilogy with any real substance.

So, regarding the pinnacle of lightsaber duels... is it telling that I feel that various fan film groups have managed to build on top of the foundations established by Star Wars, and in turn surpass official media? Because as good as the Theed City duel or Anakin vs Obi-Wan were, I find myself actually preferring fan-made duels like RvB2, Sith Tradition, Childs' Play, Ferocity, Duel of the Dorks and To The Death over even the best of the official duels.

Ok, regarding going fast, fun fact I learned... TPM's duel in Theed City was filmed using high framerate cameras to allow the scene to be slowed down, because Ray Park, Liam Neison and Ewan McGreggor managed to practice that duel sequence to the point where they were moving so fast, George Lucas was worried the scene would look unrealistic. So what we actually see in TPM is _slowed down,_ which can explain some of the weirdness with that particular duel.

Because if Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), who is an ex-marine in real life, went all out on his fight, Rey Palpatine would die. Hence, the tone down.....

Any opinion on how blade on blade clashes now have sparks? Where before in the prequels and the OT they did not? I saw one fan wrote that he haaaaaaaaates that now, and after I read his comment and noticed it, I agree (the sparks are also now in the tv shows). Maybe not hate, but why not keep the sparks for only when the blades hit non-blade things (like in the prequels and OT)? It's similar to what you mentioned about cuts, now there's too many cuts, and now there's too many sparks (like, with every smack). It sort of takes the drama out of it. Now I feel even worse, bringing up yet another thing wrong with why lightsabers suck now. Can you do a follow up after the Acolyte releases? I want to know what you think of saber fights that were released after you made this video.

Disney nerfed the lightsaber too much. There are all sorts of rare metal plates, staff, sword that can block a lightsaber. Then they also conveniently added force powers to block lightsaber swings. The lightsaber fight was thrilling before because it was not fault tolerant, one mistake could end the fight instantly.

I do wanna point out, anyone saying “the new fights make it look like they are swinging baseball bats” should probably watch Return of the Jedi again, specifically the opening, because in the entirety of Star Wars there is no instance of a character looking more like they’re just swinging a baseball bat than Luke on the barge once he gets his saber from R2, that looks FAR more like someone just wildly swinging a bat around than ANYTHING in the ST. In fact several points in the Luke vs Vader duel in the end also have Luke or Vader swinging their saber in a way much more reminiscent of a blunt weapon than a sword. So this is not a new issue unique to the ST by any means. I would also argue that the ST specifically features two novice saber users who would naturally not have a super refined saber form and would use them more unwieldy, and Kylo Ren who has a saber designed like a broadsword so again kinda meant to be more of a sluggish high impact momentum based combat style as opposed to the rapid multi-strike style you got out of the PT. And I’d like to add one more element to new sabers I personally like but is really based on preference for how you want sabers to be, their interactions with things. In the ST and the Disney shows when a saber hits something there is so much more impact and it feels like it’s doing way more damage. Like you see Obi-Wan’s saber striking a stormtrooper’s armor and there’s this explosion of sparks and the armor shatters and splinters off, it imo does more to illustrate the damage of a saber as opposed to it just searing through something. You can also see this effect in environment interactions, when Obi-Wan and Anakin are dueling through that hallway at the start of the Mustafar fight their sabers keep hitting the walls but they’re kinda just grazing through them with no real resistance (which we do see Sabers have resistance cutting through material, like Qui-Gon on the blast door in TPM), whereas in the forest duel in TFA when Rey or Kylo swing through a tree trunk you see this almost blast through it as the tree splinters and embers shoot out, it really sells this sense of energy and impact coming from it (which a lot of people don’t seem to understand that impact is actually a pretty substantial part of how actual swords function, they aren’t just cutting). Again this is kind of a preference thing but imo it conveys more power to each individual strike of a saber.

Personally, the new ones are crap for two weapons, one, threat treat lightsabers like swords, and i mean that they have weight and require tons of strength, but a lightsaber is nearly weightless and its strength is that a graze could be the end of the fight. Second is: Lightsabers are not lethal anymore most of the time. there is no weight of risk. A good summary is the anakin vs ahsoka fight, Hayden obvious is way, way better, he actively has to slow down and complete whole moves as if he was swinging 3kg of steel for ahsoka to have a chance. She wins and it feels completely unearned.

My how the times have changed. When the prequels came out, they were made fun of for the saber duels. I actually remember seeing shows on TV at the time where they had people who were trained in real medieval sword fighting explaining why the prequel duels were so ridiculous and unrealistic. The Darth Maul fight was a little fun but also a little over the top and silly, but after Menace, it just kept getting worse, by the time Yoda was dueling, it was over.. people were literally busting out laughing in the theater. I saw some people walk out of the movie at that point. I still don't quite understand how some people today are saying the prequels are good movies. I guess nostalgia for people that were really young at the time? The dialog is unbearable, and acting terrible, of course by Hayden, but also a lot of other cast members as well. And then the characters, Ani and Jar Jar.. Watto. The alien diplomats.. It's like they took the worst parts of ROTJ and just made a whole prequel trilogy in that style. I feel bad this gen has to suffer the worst writing in TV and cinema history, to the point they think Game of Thrones is a master piece.. with it's cheap "You didn't see that coming" gimmicks and cliffhanger chapter endings of a 7th graders reading catalog. Of course, cue the raunchy scenes and ultra violence to appeal to the lowest common denominator edge lord garbage, and you have yourself a masterpiece lol. Then that formula has been passed to every franchise going forward, to the point even the legendary Star Trek franchise renowned for it's deep and thoughtful writing, making you question your morals and how the universe works.. has now turned to this mush. I guess in that light and growing up on that.. yeah the prequels do seem decent.

It doesn’t “suck”, it’s just different.. the New Republic jedi are worse than the Old Republic jedi, and that is due to losing the knowledge of Jedi tradition and training/experience.. these newer aged force welders haven’t had to deal with Jedi training or the sith for decades.. Leia alone was only in her twenties when Palpatine was defeated.. now she’s in her fifties.. the Jedi have died out, so have the sith, for over 30 years.. it’s just canon

I’m glad you brought up how Ewan and Hayden just seemed to love their sword fighting. When you watch the behind the scenes, you can tell they really enjoyed the process and wanted to make it as cool as they could but make it dramatic too. This goes for the Darth Maul fight, you can tell they were enjoying it and planned it out. Like, Ray Park and Ewan Mcgregor are insane in that duel in the Phantom Menace. While the new actors may be fans, but they don’t love it like ones before them. Ewan Mcgregor’s family has been part of Star Wars since his uncle, I think, was in original trilogy as a pilot. It’s a difference in passion, and I think the people making Star Wars have lost the passion for duels and other things, but I think their making a comeback and will bring more entertaining shows and movies going forward.

The key difference is that despite Kilo being taught by Luke who was taught by Yoda how to fight, all characters in the sequels just swing as hard as they possibly can whereas the in the prequels had the actors train for months and months to the point where they had to slow down the obi wan/maul fight in post
