Mr Shelf-Stacker

Mr Shelf-Stacker

Hi. I'm Mr Shelf-Stacker; so-called because my shelves are stacked high with vinyl. Of course, I don't really stack my records and nor should you: shelve them vertically if you know what's good for them.

I've been collecting records for 40+ years. Sometimes I might show the odd CD, but mostly vinyl is what's on offer here. I wouldn't call myself an audiophile, but I do play my records on the best vintage hi-fi gear I can afford. I owe them that.

My favourite genres are Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Psychedelia, Progressive Rock, Jazz, Power Pop, and a bit of Soul, Funk, Punk and Reggae when the mood takes me. The first single I remember buying with my own money was Love Is Like Oxygen by The Sweet, but I'm pretty sure there's a David Soul 7" lurking in my past. As far as I'm concerned, when it comes to music, there's no such thing as a guilty pleasure. What's there to feel guilty about? Man up already!

    Spilt Milk is a great album with one major flaw. Sebrina, Paste and Plato. One of the most annoying songs ever recorded. Hate it immensely. But still better than Ignorance Is Bliss. Nobody’s perfect 😂

    Can't be vexed at that lot mate, especially for the prices. I'm a big fan of the Jonesy lps. They don't get much love but I prefer them to a lot of other bigger names from the time. The Love LP contains one of my favourite tracks by them, which you mentioned...I Still Wonder. You probably know that the tracks are the leftovers from Four Sail. Signed DC is on their debut btw but obviously rerecorded for Out Here. Cheers Nige

    Thanks for fleshing out the info, Nige. I definitely prefer the version of Signed DC on Out Here. The treatment they give it almost makes it sound like a completely different song. Much more dark and twisted. Cheers.

    Fantastic selection and I’m lucky enough to own them all. Trying to pick a top ten is nigh on impossible for me though. There are lots of other bands who fit the mould and some who have elements of prog, pomp, AOR and hard rock who some might argue about what category to put them in. As long as the elements mentioned above are there it doesn’t matter if the music is good. The reply from ssrocker mentions many that are essential too and I recommend everything on his list. Regarding Zon, I always thought their singer sounds like Michael Sadler from Saga. The second Touch album was released in Japan on cd and is excellent but not quite as good as the debut. Their 3rd one from recent years is good but not up to the standard of the others.

  • @MrShelf-Stacker
    @MrShelf-StackerАй бұрын

    Arguing about which categories certain artists fit into is all part of the fun, just so long as people remember to play nicely. Thanks for the heads-up on the other Touch releases, and you're right about ssrocker's suggestions: plenty to explore there!

    If you don’t know already, the Deadringer album was a one off from a ban featuring members of The Alice Cooper band and Blue Oyster Cult. Great melodic hard rock. I’ve been looking for a decent copy of the Bluebird album for decades. I have a battered copy that had no sleeve and cost 10p 20 years ago but it’s in very poor shape.

    I hadn't even got around to reading the Deadringer sleeve notes before posting this video, so thanks for the heads-up. I see now that Neal Smith, Dennis Dunaway and Joe Bouchard are on the album. You’re very welcome. I’m new to your channel and have only seen a few vids of yours that centred on rare prog and psyche albums. I am a big prog fan but the thumbnail with you holding up the Bluebird album really caught my attention as it’s very rare to hear mention of it. I particularly love pomp and AOR obscure bands so happy to see Bluebird get a mention. One day I’m sure I’ll find a decent copy for a fair price.

    Vinted eh? Always thought that was a middle class eBay so you could prove me wrong...... Going out the back in a charity shop chances are if no one prices them up you'll get them dirt cheap that's what we like 😁 I'd have grabbed that Swedish one on the basis of the cover. Out of everything the Cambodia one grabbed me as i don't think I've any music from that part of Asia. I onow there are comps about but often very expensive in normal shops. West London is more populated that here so you've got plenty more scope, i think mostly i see classical and mainstream pop no one wants.

    Very cool finds! I’d have grabbed that Papoose LP on the merits of the cover alone. And I’d def have grabbed that Cambodian Psych comp. Can you imagine living under a regime where playing an instrument or being in a band could get you jailed or even killed?! You know if they were willing to risk their freedom or their lives that they were def passionate about their art. Kind of makes you appreciate that record a bit more! That Magic Kids LP looks cool! Heavy stuff: we need a bit of sugary-sweet Magic Kids to lighten the mood. Cheers! ☮️

    Haha, you very much summed up horn rock perfectly yet I'm still a fan of the sound. Most lps are very patchy but most have a few tracks that make it worthwhile, Loadstone being one of those. The vocals are usually the main stumbling block like you say. I bought a lot of them for cheap from the US when I got online in the 00s before you were able to listen to these things first but I don't regret buying them. If Loadstone were backing Bobby Darin in 68/69 then check out his lps from that period...superb. Great footage on YT of him performing Long Line Rider with his backing band getting very funky. Cheers Nigel

  • @MrShelf-Stacker

    Must admit I'd jumped to conclusions about Bobby Darin's late 60s output. I'll have to give those LPs a listen. I have no problem with Horn Rock as a concept, just that it can be rigidly formulaic at times. When it pushes the boundaries a bit, it can deliver something pretty special though. I have a bunch of Horn Rock LPs that I rate pretty highly. Perhaps I'll review some of those sometime.

    Nice review. I found an original copy of this album in Lethbridge, Alberta sometime in the early 1990s. I was in that town on business (lived in Calgary) and, as always, went into a second-hand shop. Opposite the door, against the wall, was a standard kitchen table with records stacked in 3 rows leaning against each other up against the wall. All were $1. At the very front of the middle row, staring me in the face, was "It's All Meat" in M-/VG+ condition. I kept it until around 2007/8 then sold on eBay to somewhere in Europe for about $180. Didn't really think it was that good compared to many other psych albums from the same era (ditto for Dragonfly and Fraction - sorry Dylan). Fuzz guitar yes, but the tunes are not memorable. I now have that reissue you showed with the 45.
