Most of the Jews who converted in those days did so for material benefits, ie better jobs that practicing Jews could not hold. Otherwise, they were forced conversions.

Being a christian in the roman period was dangerous, there was nothing beneficial about it in the way of material gains. Many hid and did any kinds of meeting in small homes of people. I don't know where you get the idea that it was for material benefit, that is quite untrue.

In those days a mob of Jews couldn't just stone a person cz they felt like it. They would have to take him to a rabbinic court and have a trial. Although the death penalty was permitted, it was almost never carried out. Jesus wouldn't have been executed for anything he said.

  • @michelleg7

Not according to Jewish Historian Josephus he says otherwise, he said for example James the brother of Jesus was stoned to death by Ananus ben Ananus, the herodian high priest. Jesus would have been seen as a rebel and the sanhedrin wasn't in anyway happy with Jesus because he was seen as a problem. They felt he was blaspheming so they are the ones who turned him over to the pilot mainly and just egged on a crowd. The herodians were converts to Judaism and were not descendants of David which I find funny. But anyway, the sanhedrin were not popular with the pharisees because they were the elite who sided with Rome.

As a Jew, I read a lot of the NT and found it very offensive. Who wrote the NT and when? After a hard fought 4 year war against the Jews in Judea. Although we lost, and our Twmple was destroyed, we did a lot of damage to Rome. The Roman/Greek Christians obviously didnt like the Jews and wanted to differenciate themselves from the Jews. Imagine you are a missionary in those days. You are knocking on doors in a Roman city. You start talking about one G-d. The person says,"You aren't one of those people(Jews) are you? Of course you will say,"Oh no. We are not them. We are different." There was a lot of hatred towards Jews because of the war. I think this is why the NT disparages Jews and the commandments we hold dear.

I think you hit upon a key point... because Jews were politically unpopular in the Roman empire at that key moment, the gospel of John was written in a way to point fingers at Jewish people. This is perhaps the root of the great antisemitism that we have today. A momentary political situation preserved in the doctrine of the world's largest religion.

Non Jews/Christians have the wrong view about the "law" ie the Torah. The Torah only applies to Jews because we stood at Mt Sinai and accepted it. As a non-Jew for example, you can eat bacon and that is perfectly fine. You have to keep the 7 Noahide commandments, which G-d gave to every person since we are all decsendants of Noah. Noahides are becoming a big movement in North America. For people who want to know what G-d wants of them, this is worth checking out too.

The idea that gentiles could go through the Hebrew scriptures (when they can't read Hebrew) and the Talmud (which has huge diversity of what the Messiah would be like [and also in Hebrew]) would be like going into a Chinese restaurant and ordering German strudel. Biting into it reveals it is anything but German strudel to which the Chinese baker retorts that his is the real German strudel and all the others don't know what they are talking about. I'm done listening to christians telling me what the Jews believe. Why has the church neglected teaching Hebrew and Greek for 2000 years? Because they want to keep people ignorant so they can control them. The Jews, on the other hand, have taught their children Hebrew so that when the christian "experts" try to tell them what it "really" says even the children can see through the falsehoods.

I liked the presenter's statement that studying church history is towards maturity. I remember the part in The Disputations of Barcelona where the rabbi points out that the OT and the Talmud talks about all the "skeletons" in the Judaism "closet". ALL the Disputations are a skeleton in the churches' closet but they do the opposite (they try to hide them) . The Internet is providing the opportunity for the TRUTH to finally be brought out.

All the Rabbis were forced by the government to attend the debates, the judges were always Christian, if the Jews lost they would be violently forced to convert, if they won they would be violently punished for blasphemy, there is no defense for the Christian's behavior during these sham debates.

At 18 minutes you mentioned that the Jews would say I prefer not to or cannot answer, the reason they could not answer was because the church / Christians who were prosecuting them would then call it blasphemy in slandering Jesus, thus dooming them, King James of Aragon was the first one who allowed a fair disputation and that went too far and resulted in the expulsions

Coming from a non liturgical background, I have never celebrated the liturgical church year stuff, the different times of the year-lent, Pentecost, advent, epiphany- I’ve never heard of the different colors for the different times of the year, I never knew there was a lectionary or set scripture readings for the days of the year, like what is year a, year b, etc. I’m still just stepping into this stuff. What is a resource that would help me learn about this and know what to do for at home practice as I am still unable to attend a liturgical church.
