    Over a million troops were stationed in Ukraine alone back then. There was a lot of talk back then that NATO couldn't stop or hold against them only delay them.

  • @m1a1abramstank49
    @m1a1abramstank492 жыл бұрын

    @@Crackshotsteph That statement is correct for the current units stationed in Europe. The plan was delay them so reinforcements from other NATO countries would then stymy the Soviet advance, thus allowing for a stalemate. It should be noted that chronic ammunition shortages would be much more apparent, thus would help in slowing down a Soviet advance. If anything NATO forces would hide behind the Rhine river and if anything establish defense lines in France. The Soviets would’ve also been at risk of their subordinate countries rising up against them or separating. It also didn’t help that someone stole specs on Soviet radar and missiles allowing NATO to check their air defenses

    That was the military doctrine during the height of the Cold War. Remember that this was BEFORE the breakup of the Soviet Union and the rampant corruption of the military acquisition programs. They had the tanks and maintained them. They had the troops. Nowadays, the modern corrupt Russian military is only good on paper.

    The position of the missiles is wrong but given limited intel of the time it does make sense. If it was carrying two AS-4 Kitchens or AS-6 Kingfish, they would be the wing roots not on the belly. Only a single AS-4 was carried semi-recessed in the belly.

    Actually in ww2 we lost exactly 100 people, by american bombing.

  • @schizoidboy
    @schizoidboy2 жыл бұрын

    There was an article in Military History Quarterly about that bombing, the target was right on the border with Switzerland and near a Swiss town. I believe it was said the Germans kept their lights on to confuse the bombers. I also believe there was a court-martial over the bombing, but I don't think that matter was pressed. Incidentally there were times when Germans flew over Switzerland and were shot down by the Swiss as well and there were attempts by the Germans to disable the Swiss Air Forces, but the Swiss caught the agents. The weird thing about neutrality is in a shooting war where a nation is close to the fighting that same nation might as well be at war, not in that it needs to fight, but needs to be on its guard and have their military active. Fortunately for Switzerland both sides in WWII preferred to keep them neutral especially where the Red Cross was concerned and other diplomatic needs. Sorry for the length of the comment.
