    So is this only applicable to cnc design?? Because I don’t see the need for a computer at all designing knives.

    Hi Walter, can you do a video of how to grind scallops in a chef knife ? I can't find a single KZread video on it

  • @Maegnas99
    @Maegnas992 күн бұрын

    Most would be made with a mill. If you have to do it manually, you'd have to use the very edge of a tiny contact wheel and just feather in and out of the scallop shape. Maybe a rotary tool with small drums would be more accurate?

    You talking about Granton scallops? Scallops that run perpendicular to the edge? If so tye reason you don't see anyone making them is because they are useless lol I was a professional chef for 17 years and have used multiple knives with granton scallops and they range from doing nothing, to actually increasing food stick to the blade lol

    Yeah man. Machine fixtures are the most fun part of the game. I worked in a machine shop for a while, my own home shop is just a manual mill but still, trying to figure out how to hold things and the process is half the work (fun).

    Neat video. Thanks. When I tried using a computer to draw knives, all I got were shapes that looked like bananas. I have to use graph paper and French curves to make a knife drawing.

    Any knife makers out there who are comfortable with CAD, consider buying a cheap 3D printer. You can get a useable one for less than $200 or an excellent one for less than $1000. I have a $99 3D printer and some CAD knowledge, so I can 3D print for rapid prototyping. It’s a MAJOR time saver. Designing a new knife is probably my favorite aspect of knife making, and the printer makes it so much more quick and easy.

    Evergy technology comes with limitations. I would guess a knife could be made via laser cintering of metal powder. It would not make a particularly strong knife.

    Designing knives is still challenging, and the back-and-forth process in drawing the knife helps bring my ideas to life. I enjoy creating my own designs. Thank you for this learning...smiles. I like drawing the knife out, then putting it on my steel and cutting it out perfectly. After that, I make a template so I can use it again.

    My 90lb Wilkinson made in 1910 has fantastic rebound over it's entire surface. I am selling it tomorrow for $360. With other antique quality anvils around my area going for similar prices, I can't understand why anyone would pay dang near the same price for a cast Chinese anvil.

    1 year later, Vevor does NOT include the refractory cement for their "panda shaped" forges any more, nor the paint brush to apply it. You can still buy it separate, which of course is an added cost, but you can also find this same forge on a decent sale under $150 (i got mine for $120 on memorial day), its normal price is now about $190.

    i would add that you never file the tang if it's a shinken. all in all, i don't recommend filing the tang ever, but definitely not when it's a real japanese blade - it's used to measure the age of the blade and also to establish legitimacy.
