  • @OHMAudioChannel

It would take quite a bit of work to get the crossover improved as well as tools that cost way more than the speaker itself to get started.

  • @krjohnson29

@@ForrestLambert.2022 I'm sending my CS5 to GR Research to get tested and potentially get a new crossover designed. Probably should hear back from them in a month or so if they were able to do anything with it. I did the GR Research crossover upgrade on the BS5s and am so happy with it that I had to see what GR Research could do with the center channel. 🙂 But OHM Audio is definitely correct, I expect any upgrade of the crossover to probably cost more than the stock speaker itself did (maybe even 2x or 3x) as well as take quite a bit of work on my end (well maybe an afternoon's worth of work anyway). But after the upgrade I would suggest it might be better than speakers costing several times more than that, depending on how you look at it. We shall see. 🙂 The crossover definitely changes how a speaker sounds. A well designed crossover blends the output of the woofer and the tweeter so that they seamlessly blend into each other and create a relatively flat response without any out-of-phase cancellation. But there's an art to it, because there's a lot of different ways to design them and ways that they can correct for issues with the drivers or other aspects of the speaker design. And the parts quality in the crossover also matters and can affect the clarity and detail. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6ynyLOiYcvSqrg.html

I just purchased the BS5's and paired them with the CS5 center channel (with 4ea surrounds and a Sony 12 powered sub). I'm 100% happy with them so far, the warm not harsh clarity throughout the volume levels is very impressive. If you haven't already, may I suggest doing a review of the CS5 in conjunction with the BS5's? I am so impressed with the combo. I used to have a Polk CSI3 (& RTi8's) center and this CS5 projects even better. So clear! I cant believe what they can do with technology vrs 15-17 years ago. Not to mention at a fraction of the cost.

Depending on the power supply and amplifier stage of the AVR, running a lower impedance speaker could cause issues with overheating or loss of dynamics. Most AVRs can play 4 ohm speakers, but your entry level ones are more likely to run into power limitations if pushed hard vs a mid to upper tier one. For clarification I’d consider mid tier to start around the $1k USD mark.

I am disappointed to hear that they tipped up the high frequencies on the speaker. I really like the 402s, I actually used them in my bathroom on an airplane Who system.

Agreed. I think with a reworked crossover these could be an excellent choice for a sub $200 speaker.

Great speakers. I have four with a r52c center and dual pb1000's for a 5.2.0 setup. Looking to replace the fronts with the larger r51m's then 2 more r41m's in a front height and rear height configuration to bring my system to a 5.2.4. Can't wait.

Yeah I think the R51M would be a more balanced sound as the 4” driver of the r41m just isn’t able to keep up with the horn loaded tweeter
