What’s your opinion on this?
What is "this"?
Good job as always guys! If working on bugs teaches you anything it's problem solving! bummer about the brake calipers but I'm sure you'll figure out a way to use them.
Wow!! Thank you soooo much for sharing this great info! 👏👏👏👌👍
Do you happen to know the size of the self tapping screws you used?
I regularly use #8 Self Tapping Sheet Metal Screws, I think they are 5/8" long.
I’m keen on your timing plate. Have you considered making a few of them and selling them to us ? Roysters 😎
Wish he didn’t speed up the video. I wanted to hear how it increases in rpm.
Do you know where i can get the bolts for the spring plate cap?
For swing axle and single spring plate applications the bolts are 15mm long, 10x1.5mm threaded bolts , and original VW units have a 15mm hex head. You can use a generic, 17mm head bolt, or you can use an allen head cap bolt for more clearance.
@@Sam_Mebane Thank you!
Spacers not included in the kit for IRS. ...Very frustrating! In the description for the spacer (22-5281-7) states "This Spacer Is Required For Disc Brake Rotors In Rear With IRS Transmission". SO why not include them in the "Kit"?!!?
The kits that require them include them. If they weren’t and you do need them, give the order desk a call and they can get them sent out to you.
I like your videos but when you used a "Crescent wrench" to crack the drain plug 😱 I know , it's a $6.00 drain plug 😁 otherwise you do good work . 👍
Haha, thanks. The best tool for the job is whatever is close at hand...sometimes! I'd say that if this wasn't a disassembly I'd use the "right" tool, but I'd probably still have used the "all sixteenths" if it was close by.
To true , and I have never done a "tear down " or a "engine build " video and I probably never will . Happy building brother 😎
I think no matter what you should only offer a welded and balanced fan anyways I would never buy a cheap one I rather have an original German 1Or a welded balanced one
I'm glad you showed the rods getting installed backwards, I too did that and didn't catch it. Couldn't understand why it kept throwing the flywheel off the crank. Never made that mistake again!
When I first rebuild the engine in my bug. I had no idea this was a thing. My 437 was cleared for this. And I thought I had even more issues than a rod bearing. But hey, bug and learn 😂
Definitely dump the Baja videos. I like the concept. Bought a ‘68 a year ago to restore with my daughter.
Kinda sad that empi valve covers .. don't fit empi heads 😢
Hello great video. My brakes when out on my 1964 vw. Once I reset ebrake will my brakes work?
Probably not. The parking brake lever only pulls the two brake cables, which pull two levers inside the drum, which manually pulls the brake shoes against the drum to prevent it from turning while the car is parked.
Surprised the Dyno guy pushed the engine over 6000rpm with a stock cooling fan, in the engine.
He had a lot going on and it wasn't his dyno. When we first talked about where we wanted to run the engine, we discussed not taking it over 7k but oh well. What's done is done!
@@Sam_Mebane Understood.
A stock cooling fan can only handle 6500rpm right?
If that, we don't like running a stock fan over 6000.
@@Sam_Mebane Good to know. I wasn't sure.
I know you guys are going thru hell but some of us are learning a lot out here and its not BS. I am a new customer an this is info that is just HUGE. Thank you guy's so much for sharing all of this. It's priceless
@@johnwerner7194 it's is truly my pleasure. Through the ups or the downs of all of this, I thank God that I have this opportunity cause there are much worse days to make a living. I am very fortunate to get paid to do this!
Yah dump the videos, love your Baja. Keep up the good work. 👍
Working on them now!
You have the best VW videos.
Thank you!
Question. My low beams and high beams work ad they should (foot switch) but the high beam (blue bulb) on the dash is always on. What can i check to fix it?
First things first, I would check the wiring for the indicator bulb. If it is always on, it getting power from somewhere that it shouldn't be. The high beam indicator wire should be wired to one of the white high beam wires.
@Sam_Mebane its connected to the white high beam. Also have a new high beam switch, and headlight switch
Use a test light and see if the wire always has power. Then use the test light and trace the wire to see where the power is coming from.
How is the camber on these? I have read that Latest rage had a camber issue on these arms at one time.
It isn't horrible but they do have a bit of positive camber at ride height. You can see a bit of it here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5akj5mleczLd6w.html
@@Sam_Mebane Thanks for the straight up honest answer!!!
Do you have Part 3 on this great tutorial video?
It has been filmed but we haven't had a chance to release it yet.
Honestly, awful video, you can barely see the wheels with the huge logo watermark and the uncool camera movements and cuts it is hard to appreciate them. Only the last few seconds are worth it.
That's the point... They aren't released yet which is when you will get a more detailed video. ☕
Took the words right out of my mouth JMC!
@@Sam_Mebane this society is an "I can't wait" society. Kind of amusing but at the same time frustrating. The suspense and thrill of your video are perfect for what you were trying to accomplish! I will add, I hope you offer some way cooler center "hub caps" than just the normal EMPI chrome center caps.
@@JMC8415 there just isn’t anything else as far as center caps out there for wide 5 wheels, but I hear you!
@@Sam_Mebane you could definitely come up with a cool option. Doesn't mean they'd be cheap but anything CAN be done 😉
Do you have a link to this specific headliner kit ? Can’t seem to find it
You will have to contact TMI directly for the Whiskey Uni-Suede headliner.
Do you have a link to this specific headliner kit ? Can’t seem to find it
That was fantastic -- really appreciate you keeping it real -- no fanfare, marketing hype, or sleight of hand. I learned a great deal, please keep the tutorials coming.
WIll do, thank you! We have the rest of this engine's build filmed already but the videos haven't made it out yet due to other projects.
Boxer Beauty With A Touch Of Madness.
I have a 71 bus with this carburetor, but I think the dude I bought it from didn’t tune it properly. Is there a reset position for the two screws to start from scratch to tune it? It keeps flooding. (High elevation- Denver)
To go back to a baseline, we gently turn both screws in all the way. Do not over tighten them as the screws and the seat are very fragile. From there, turn both screws out 1 and a half turns, (360 degrees, then 180 more).
@@Sam_Mebane thank you so much!
Ya gotta find the sweet spot. Every engine can be different
Yes when different cams and when different deck hight and different compression ratios will cause timing too not be like the book standered.
Sounds like alot of clatter... possibly valve train clatter? Valve lash.
It was actually the fan rubbing on the shroud a bit!
Mine looks better, hasnt got all that weired looking stuff on it😊
I don't know what is weird (not weired) about a fan shroud and dual carburetor linkage. It doesn't matter as this one isn't yours. You like what you have, and that's the important part. Being happy with what you've got is a good place to be!
@@Sam_Mebanesorry, wasn't trying to be sarcastic
@@user-ff5ge7hx2c nor was I, you are happy with what you have and that's saying something! Most are jealous of something that someone else has.
Hello! What happens with gearbox if you connect it with a powerfull engine ?
Nothing, until you drive it. At which point if you drive carefully the transmission might hold up for awhile. If you don't, you'll probably end up with a broken differential or a cracked case. Whenever you upgrade the engine for power, the transmission should be upgraded to suit.
Really cool! I can’t wait to make it to some shows!
Sam, are the cylinder heads complete and ready to bolt on or do the valves need to be lapped before installation?
The heads are complete and ready to run. Could they be pulled apart and get a full 3 angle valve job? Sure, but I've never bothered for stock applications.
great video! Im glad im not the only one who made the same mistakes with my first engine build.
To err is human, to forgive, divine. I'm not here to show how perfectly everything goes, if I make a mistake, I'll show it, and how to fix it!
Are all the belt attachment holes threaded on a '69 bug? Or do I have to do any drilling?
All of the holes should be threaded, yes.
Amazing work!
Great to review!
Amazing number of common words adding up to mean nothing!😮
I can’t believe nobody has commented on this ..??? Interior work is so difficult!! Classic interior.
Hey Sam. What gasket compound do you use for the oil pump gasket?
Gasgacinch typically, although copper RTV works well, as does Permatex Aviation Sealant.
@@Sam_Mebane sweet! It's good to know there are options on that. Thanks!
Good info
hi why don't you install a strait cut cam gear on this power full challenger engine ?🤔😁
Straight cut gears sound cool, for about a minute, then you realize how loud they are and want a break! I used to co-drive a Class 11 race car and after way too many hours in the car listening to straight cut gears, we decided against them for an engine that will eventually end up in a street car.
Here in the UK my vintage road racing 1965 Beetle is getting 126hp@7700rpm from its twin carb 1285cc with stock sized (33x30mm) valves though a regulation (105db max) silencer, so it should be 100hp/litre with a stinger fitted. Gathering parts for a 1299cc (60x83mm) which will allow much larger valves. Currently runs high 14's on the 1/4 and the low gearing means it tops out at 113mph Love to know if there's any quick 1300's over there in the US
60 mm crankshaft is 25 or 36 horse crank
3.88 ring and pinion should give you more top end speed
@@rickmartin7062 If I use a 3.88 the 'theoretical' top speed would be 141mph, but my motor doesn't have the correct torque curve to pull that gear at any speed. It currently has a 4.86 due to it being a circuit racer. The tracks in the UK have very few long straights, so you have to sacrifice top speed for acceleration, from a slow corner I can match the acceleration of the 400hp Mustangs upto 70mph after which they pull away, but you make back the time lost under braking and cornering
There isn't a big push on the lower displacement engines here stateside, outside of land speed races.
@@Sam_Mebane Seems to be a European thing. I'm limited to 1300cc by vintage racing rules. There's also a 1584cc drag racing challenge based in Sweden but covers all of Europe, cars must also use stock valve sizes, quickest in the street class so far is 11.1@126mph quickest race car 9.4@150mph
My late father went on a business trip to West Germany (as it was then known) in 1961 and surprise! brought home a VW Beetle. Since then I’ve had an affinity for them. Great to see people still enjoying them.
Ah, back in the good(?) old days of East & West Germany....we're showing our age there! There's a reason why Disney used the Beetle as the car in the Herbie series. Very few cars invoke the emotions that a Beetle does!
AWESOME video. Lots of hard work. We all learn every day or the day wasn't complete. I don't think there is any machine on the planet Loved more than the volkswagon. Again thank you very much for a real life experience in the shop
Thank you John, I agree with you 100%. Beetles just have a way of evoking emotion!
Well done Nathan!
Great job! No fear just put yourself out there and take a chance.
Thank you, yeah I had nothing to prove and nothing to lose so we just went for it. It could have been better and it could have been much worse! I chalk it all up as a learning experience and thank God for the opportunity!
@jbugvwparts Brother, I’m need to install a third brake light, the third brake light has three wires: brown, black and greenyellow. Where does each wire go to and to which socket can I connect that to?
Old VWs did not have a third brake light so whatever the wires are on your light is impossible for us to say. Your best bet is to hook up one wire (I'd start with the black wire) to the ground (negative) terminal of a 12 volt battery and connect the others, one at a time to the positive terminal so you can determine what does what on the light. As for connecting it to the VW wiring, the black/red wire at either side of the engine compartment is the brake light signal.
