I Love the sound of these bells,, they produce a lovely 'drone'' when they're going right. As I understand it, the treble, 2nd & 3rd are very hard to hear if you are ringing the aforementioned bells unless you're ringing the 4th, 5th or tenor, in which case those ringers can hear the front 3 bells. As I am led to believe, this was due to the fact that volunteers cleaned the Belfry, including numerous bales of Hay that covered the Belfry floor. However, unbeknown to them, the hay bales were serving a purpose; acting as a sort of 'DIY' Sound proofing system, hence why the drone drowns out the front 3 bells (if you're directly underneath, ringing them). Ryan, was this lovely peal of yours pre/post removal of sound proofing just out of curiosity?

Never a great fan of Devon Call changes l. I guess I don't like the closed leads, however I must admit the striking is fantastic. I do think Devon Call changes sounds some much better half muffled. I think Gillet bells are fantastic. Peals that spring to mind are St James Clerkenwell and Coventry Cathedral. I love the way the Devon call change ringers pull the bells up.

Why in this area of the country don't you leave a gap on the leading bell's handstroke? Does that apply only to method rather than change ringing?
@ryantrout60948 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin, it has always been the Devon Call change way to leave no hand stroke gap, but they do ring like this in parts of Yorkshire, for our type of ringing it is what gives it rhythm.

Great clip Trouty, thank you! Do you remember the last Rector of Lutsleigh, Revd Kenneth Jackson? It was my first visit to Devonshire and I thought the village and surrounding countryside to be very beautiful.

Thanks Simon for your comment. I think G&J bells r to die for, I wish they were still casting bells now!! U can tell their bells a mile off such a beautiful, harmonic sound! I love good Taylor bells and I'm a fan but they're sooooo different which is good! We r lucky I think to have such great bells down in Devon and Cornwall. U can compare the truly fantastic 8 by G&J at Kinsteignton to the beautiful Taylor 8 at Bideford or the majestic G&J 8 at Holsworthy to the wonderful Taylor 8 at Plympton St Maurice! Or the awesome G&J 6 at Lostwithiel to the awesome Taylor 6 at Ludgvan! All those mentioned would take some beating!
