How do you lift ur butt up so high without using your legs? Also when i try to put my legs up like knee bent my legs keep falling back down
@MrMatthewtilford3 ай бұрын
Leg positioning as a huge part of ground to chair transfers. Having shows on helps create friction so your feet stay planted. Leverage is another factor. When I start to lift you’ll see my head lean forward and down. Doing this helps lift your butt higher. It’s a lot of arms, chest and upper back doing the work.

The low desert in springtime is one of my favorites - everything's in bloom! It's gorgeous! My chair enabled me to go hiking with my parents at somewhere between 15 and 18 national parks back in the fall - we hit a total of 22 or 23, and hiked at somewhere between 15 and 18 of them. Definitely needed my SmartDrive (it's not an optional extra for me like a free wheel would be, it's a necessity - my shoulders got so messed up from wheeling the standard manuals that I had to use for the first 2 years that they can't handle it anymore without help), but some of the trails were so bad (I'm looking at you, George Washington Carver) that it was actually crapping out on me (as in spinning out so hard that it just quit, because polypave is NOT accessible if the power add-on has to maintain traction in order to provide propulsion, at least I've found that to be true in my case; it was spinning out on me at Grand Teton, too, on the trail from the parking lot to the Rockefeller Nature Center - the NPS needs some disability and accessibility education; my casters are 1.5"x5", so those aren't a factor with traction issues), even though I had literally just replaced the rollers right before the trip - had to stick to the grass in order to get traction, and it did that beautifully, as it always has from the day I got it. Was supposed to get marathon plus tires from the very beginning (mainly for the run-flat feature, since I discovered with a nasty surprise on that trip that I can't wheel with a flat tire - thankfully my uncle had a patch kit for his bikes and let me use one the next day, so my dad helped me with that, since that was one thing I always meant to get but never got around to; that's still the only issue I've had with my tires, other than the tread wearing down super quickly, and I've had my chair for almost 2 years) but the original order was messed up and I ended up with the really bad primo orions, which needed to be replaced within a matter of months, long before the trip started, and I still haven't been able to do it yet. Been considering the Nevegals for a really long time (since before I got my chair, in fact) but I don't want to have to be constantly adjusting my brakes every time I switch wheels (I've got an Aero Z - it's my first custom chair), because I definitely would need to if the tires are different thicknesses when inflated (and everything I've seen and read indicates that they are). I ended up only needing help at 3 places - Carlsbad, because some of the hills in the trail in the cavern are so steep and so wet that my very badly worn tires just couldn't get enough traction to go down them even in a wheelie, so my mom helped lower me in the spots I needed it (I have fold-down handles on my chair and I got a pair of height adjustable bolt-on ones right before the trip, which came in very handy); Bandelier, because I decided to go a little further than what was technically "accessible", so up to the base of the steps for the cliff dwellings, and the path was much steeper and extremely sandy from all the rain they'd just had (so again, unable to maintain enough traction for the downhills); and Pecos, simply because I hadn't been able to charge my SmartDrive at all for 3 days (it can go 2 days easy without charging, at least with the amount I was using it, but 3 was pushing it) because we were tent car camping (I think my parents' tent is a 4-person but it sleeps 3 comfortably with gear; no vestibule or extra room inside, so my chair stayed in the car - I don't need it all the time, just a lot of the time for the particular activities we were doing: visitor centers, museums, hikes, etc.) those nights and the only place I could securely charge it a the campground - one of the cigarette lighters in the car - wasn't powerful enough, even with the engine running, so my mom helped out on the uphills, with some (but not a lot, because I wanted to conserve the battery) SmartDrive assistance (if I had been able to charge it in the car, I wouldn't have needed her help at all at Pecos). I've now done 30-something national park sites (I'd say parks, but some of them aren't technically "parks", like several of the ones around the national mall) to date, and all but 7 were with wheelchair assistance (used a standard manual for 2 years before getting my Aero Z), as well as numerous state parks, museums, and some big cities, like D.C. and Richmond. Don't know whether I'll get to any this year, but I've had a dream since high school of eventually visiting every national park site, at least on the mainland of the lower 48 (would probably have to do the southeast in the winter, since I don't do well in hot humid temps - one of many reasons I moved from MN to WY), so we'll see what the future holds.

The freewheel is great for this type of thing! What are the big tyres you're using? Been looking at getting something similar, do you think they're worthwhile?
@MrMatthewtilford5 жыл бұрын
I agree. Ability levels vary. Some of the trails that work for me may not work for others. Trails should be marked accessible if they're easily traversed by all. This is why most marked accessible trails are paved and only a mile long. Freewheel is a must. I like to use Kenda Nevegal tires in soft dirt or mud. If the trail is hard packed I will stick with my everyday Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires.
