I gradually switched to free and open source software before switching to linux ... made it easy.

I was genuinely really interested in switching over to Linux from Windows, for many of the reasons you outlined here, but I’ve read quite a bit on how linux is *not* in a good position as of 2024. Mainly concerning IBM’s purchase of Red Hat and what’s followed from that. Check out the video called LINUX SUCKS 2024 (from a linux community member).

On devices support, linux tends to be better at everything printing related. I can't even install drivers for my laser printer on Windows anymore. But I pretty much vender locked at windows :(

Great analysis. I've come to the terms, windows will still be my main workstation box. But Linux is my on the go laptop os. Anything that needs to be snappy and lightweight just works best as Linux. I run a home server and that obviously happily runs Linux as well.

seeing all those positive comments, my first time with Linux is not so good..... I spend hours and hours go through forum posts trying to fix issue (want to install some app for work which require some other app installed first, and each installment came with random errors). Linux forum is 100% better than Windows that I can actually find solutions to my problem, it’s just I took all the time fixing the problem of the OS but not the work itself. I have no coding background or knowledge regarding OS makes it much more tedious to do. Is there any place where I can go and learn the over all basic so that I won’t look at some instruction and think ”That must be some function so basic that everyone should know but not me.” So far Windows is still the “click and work” for me due to the eco system that supports it, I wish one day I can do all my work on Linux so that I don’t have to deal with all the WTF business ideas of Microsoft.

Some of us want the AI features built into Windows. I know there's a vocal minority that hate it but for the average user its not a big deal the problem is the average user don't say anything on the forums or the feedback hub. Also how come no one that advocated for open source don't tell everyone about all the downsides as well there are ALOT of cons as well. like people building distros that steal your data yes they do exist and lots of people have fallen for it. When softwear is open source ANYONE can do ANYTHING with the code. Yes people will catch it but not before its done harm to someone. PS Most hacks are done using Linux being untraceable is only a good thing if your not doing anything wrong. Giving criminals that kind of power is like asking for problems.

Perfect video summarizing the experience. Love it. I recently felt simmilar and made the switch. However, I do still need Windows around for some gaming. My main machine is linux but I have my windows box around for the few things which require it. Ill say that if you're savy enough to run Linux you're also savy enough to debloat windows and make it acceptable regarding privacy. Still, nothing feels more right than using a FOSS platform.

I love your point about the direction the internet is going - with things changing in ways the average person doesn't understand, or isn't supposed to understand, its more and more important to have a computer that works for PEOPLE, not shareholders. Ditto on the Healthy Perspective. I have used Linux exclusively for a few years now and I have mostly left my system as-is.

If you ever do another longer version of this video I'd love to see a section on games that are friendly to Aus players due to them not being super ping reliant. Games like EvE online feel fine because they dont require fast reactions to play :D Subbed

Hearing Timeshift reminded me that for SOME reason Microsoft disables restore points by default on windows 11 (and I think 10 at some point) Someone made that conscious decision and if I'm at the point I need to enable/disable so many things to get it to "just work", would rather just go with an OS where you need to adjust stuff but actually respects you and gives you more power by default

I personally dedicate each involved operating system to its own drive because Windows 10 and up can occasionally beat the bejeezus out of the GRUB bootloader and leave Linux unbootable, making you go in and fix that up, which should be unnecessary. I'm using Windows 7 now, but I'm not inclined to break this habit.

Sorry but still windows is superior mature plus widely used in corporate entities, hospitals, medical Colleges, engineering Colleges, banks, atms etc. linux is cool but still not consumer ready plus many premium apps on windows are just not have direct alternatives in Linux. Gaming is also a big issue in Linux

A good video, but I think a more apt title would have been: "How and why I tried Linux but was pretty much forced to switch back to Windows." Main 2 areas I'm working on regarding using Linux: 1) Getting gaming going well. As I don't do online pVp games, my main roadblock is scripted mods such as for Bethesda games, and 2) more importantly to me: Getting the audio recording VST plugins I use to work well and together in the same OS, e.g. Neural DSP, EZDRummer 3, EZMix, Amplitube and Tonex, etc... I'm looking into a couple possible ways to do this: 1) Working with Wine to try and make them work or 2) Going to try using a Windows VM and passing through a USB controller with the Audio Interface, the main concern being if it will mess with audio latency -- too much will make it unusable. I know gaming will work well enough for me, though I would definitely miss the scripted mods and could look into a Windows VM specifically for gaming and mods, assuming the GPU doesn't take too much of a hit. But, with Windows spyware ever creeping into the picture, if using Linux doesn't work for that, I'll use a Mac Mini specifically for audio production and will try to use Linux for the rest.

Instead of dual booting why dont you dual-machine. Get a mac mini for Resolve and run all the rest on your Linux mint machine. That's what I have done for 10 years now, never misses a beat. Everything works. And no Microsoft in sight. You can even Remote into your Linux machine from the Mac Mini. If your need to screen record something you have done on your Mint machine

I made the switch when Windows Vista came out...I HATED it. In a way I am glad I did it back then. Things were so much harder to get working and software and hardware were real problems, although 90% of the time you could find a way to make things work. I certainly don't miss having to figure out how to compile software from a tar.gz when a deb wasn't available, but today...you rarely if ever will have to do that. The thing that amazes me is the speed at which Linux distros have advanced in the last several years. I barely have to ever use the command line for anything (although it is the faster way sometimes when you are used to it). A/V software is leaps and bounds better, even in just the last couple of years. I think that is really the last hurdle that gives some people pause.

3:30 I wouldn't recommend dual boot on the same disk, at least for beginners. I've heard plenty of stories of Windows messing up the Linux partition, and yes, even the other way around. Get a cheap second disk if you have a desktop. If your windows pc is a laptop, you could get a cheap second hand laptop to try Linux on, that's what I did, even though I have a Windows desktop, but I wanted to be able to use both OSs at the same time.
