I introduce my friends to the classic British children's comedy series based on the legend of Robin Hood.

This show absolutely ruled. I've still got a crush on Marian 'cos she was a bit of a punk. Robin deserved more than a life of doing Campino adverts.

One of the goons (Gary) is Mark Billingham, who is now a well respected and award winning crime writer.

Yup that's Tony Robinson/Baldrick from Blackadder, he also wrote it, and did Time Team (the archaeology show) This also stars Danny John-Jules as Barrington who is Cat in Red Dwarf

This originally aired basically immediately after Blackadder had finished. I don't think there was more than a week or two gap.

It's obviously very dated, but I love the good-natured pantomime feel (reminds me of 'The Legend of Dick and Dom', a reference for any British audiences my age), and the fact that they're making a genuine point about how Robin gets all of the credit. 16:00 - Strange transitions should be a hallmark of every Robin Hood adaptation. :p Nice animated credits too.

It's definitely weirder without context of the time, what it's satirising etc. But obviously most importantly, this was a kids' show. It's interesting what it actually *does* share with the 2006 series. Always just 2 guards, Marian being a badass and actually wanting to do the work, Robin getting all the attention. Barrington is meant to be a version of the classic Alan A Dale bard character. A lot of earlier Robin Hood adaptations (especially the ones this is referencing) had a *lot* more Merry Men overall. They tended more towards the handsome and slightly rough type Marian talks about here lol
