I'll just say this: Turtle Rock Studios is a company with great ideas, but the ideas are too ambitious for their lack of manpower. Like, it's almost a necessity for them to stay with Valve with how crazy they are. Imagine Valve helping with Evolve. Probably could've been a contender for best on-going game category.

Thank you for making this video! As someone who started playing RO around 2004, it was really helpful to hear how it all started in great detail. A few things I feel need to be added to the list of clues include: *Rampant cheating, especially on official servers. Logging into an official server meant farming on the same map as 15-20 botting generic Thieves/Rogues. When a single map has only 40 spawns of the one monster you want to kill, it's extremely hard to make any progress when all of the limited resources are being taken by the bots. Oh, and there were a bunch of Novices in Prontera that would be spamming advertisements 10 times a second to buy zeny at a shady website. Surprisingly, the private servers did a much better job of handling botters, which made them much more appealing... *The monetization was absolutely predatory to the point of being toxic and dividing the player base. Flagrant issues included: -Bubble Gum. If you wanted to be part of a good boss-hunting party, you needed to buy "Bubble Gum" from their cash shop, an item that increases the drop rate from slain monsters. If you didn't have Bubble Gum, your party would hate you for not having it or even deny you access. -VIP Systems. Sure, you could be free-to-play, but the game at every turn would hate you by making the game as inconvenient as possible. Higher EXP on death, limited warping capabilities with higher costs, needing buy even more cash shop items to even access end game content, and a lower drop rate. -Enriched Elunium/Oridecon. If you want to upgrade your equipment stronger, you need this stuff from the cash shop. If you don't and try to go the free-to-play route, your equipment has a high chance to literally delete itself while trying to upgrade it. *"Revo-Classic" servers. Instead of creating the Pre-Renewal or Classic servers that people absolutely still want to play (based on the absurd number of Private Server players on them), they decided to launch what were basically Renewal servers (with Renewal mechanics that were hated) while also just limiting the amount of end-game content that people could do. These were highly unpopular servers after launching due to continued issues with cheating and terrible monetization. My favorite way to describing official servers now: "It's what you see on just about the worse-run private server."

It's truly bizarre how StW is still being updated even years after this video. I play it often, being one of the people who believed in the original idea. They still give us founders free vbucks by doing dailies and through daily alerts, and there's regular Save the World access packs that come with a skin and a number of quests along with it. Even just a few days ago we somehow got a new hero. The game has a yearly rotation of events, and there's even modes with reoccurring progression wipes to help keep things fresh. And now with Fortnite expanding to include games like Rocket Racing, Lego Fortnite and Fortnite Festival, I wonder if there's still a future where Save the World could begin getting significant content updates again.

One thing I don't see mentioned much in MCO retrospectives is the late addition of two or three tuner cars. At release, every car had a 3D interior you could view from behind the wheel, but the Japanese cars they added didn't have that, and the entire game was sort of trying to give off this American Graffiti vibe, so the addition of these cars was puzzling and seemed a bit half-hearted. In retrospect the game seems like it was kind of rudderless overall, as if they just had no idea what to do with the game after they released it to the world. EA's compensation for shutting services down was I think either a voucher for one of their other MMOs (I recall Sims Online being one) or discounted subscription price on said MMOs, which I found to be pretty insulting.

People play these kinds of games for relaxation. Most players are like me, casual players! I was a huge fan during Beta version but when the actual game was released I was like WTF??!! This is completely different game! I mean it is expected to see some significant changes during the transition from Beta version to the actual release version but what we got was a totally different game. I tried to "reconnect" to the game but everything was totally different and not in a good way. It demanded too much that I could not afford. I wish they just went with the Beta version and simply, balance it as necessary and expand from time to time. Please guys just bring back that old Beta version.

As huge fan of the core gameplay loop (but I get it's not for everyone) - I've played a lot of team based games, and to me this is still the peak teamwork based game - in part beacuse of some of the core gameplay limitations. A huge issue was ballance. Classes, weapons and ocassionaly a ship. Muse were caught in the impossible issue of ballancing the game for new players on one hand and the competitive scene on the other. The best example was the flamer. It was a weapon that terrified all the new players, to the point it stopped for them, but if you saw a flamer in a match of the weekly tournament, it was there for a joke on a slot that you weren't really expecting to use. Classes again had balnce issues. Outside of speciffic builds that involved a lof of medium to long range heavy guns, gunners were looked down as a class, as in most cases you didn't need to take gunner calss to be effective or even great gunner, but you needed to be a piot to be effective pilot and engineer to be effective engineer. My personal favorite was engineer, because I sucked at most gunnery; I was a average pilot, a good commander, but I couldn't do both at the same so I was terrible captain (I was still plenty good enough to teach new players how to do anything other than gunnery other than the weapon theory and meta - even before becoming a CA I spent a lot of time teaching new players, and it realy was teaching). Beng a great Captain was being able to preform an ambush on someone who was camping in their spawn, being a great gunner meant being able to snipe baloon of enemy hiding in a cloud over 1 kilometer away wiht Lumberjack heavy mortar or meling junker's hull with Hades light mortar over 600 meters away - neither of witch I could do (but team mates could). Being a great main engineer was doing all your duties and still ding a way to find a way to fire the tird fon on your 2 gun forward 2 gun port Payramidion, without missing any of your duties (this I waht I was good at). Game didn't have a modicum of sucsess, because it was the only game - because it wasn't. There was a viking themed floating longboat themed game conceptually very close to what the Goio was, but the other game (I can't remember the name, and I tried to figuer out what it was) died in a couple of months. Game died in late 2017, because it was an indie PvP shooter (with a lof of issues) instead of an open world game where you could do all that PvP combat if you wanted in adittion to trading, crafting and exploring. AI development took 3 years for example. Majortiy of the playerbase in next few years following 2017 was the hardcore competitve scene with about 40 players that would meet to the weekly tournamends. Everyone knew the game was dead by the early 2018. Everything since was just maintaining the game - I know there was a non trivial ammount of effort put into it, and they were trying to turn it around, but I think everyone including Muse, understood when it was clear with failiure Alliance to garner sales. Guns of Icarus launch price was about 20$/€ - I know I paid about 18 during the general Winter Steam Sale of 2012 (when everything was at least 10% off) -witch is same as Alliance with Allince being the full product including the entirety PvP and the Entire PvE section. It was still too lithe too late. Hamsterdam development began before Allince was even in beta, and it was publicly discussed. Nor was Embr or Wildmender. But in the interweening time they went from fully independent to having a publisher with more funds. I was a very flawed game that had no real potential, due to lack of funds and expertise (i love the devs, but at least at the time they were lacking the expertise to pull of an open world game with ship exploration), but loved it, I'm proud of my time time there and I'm very sad that it died.

I played the game for a few weeks in... 21? 22? I'm not an extraction shooter player at all, but the world, the looting and the PvE were really fun. Ultimately I quit because of getting killed by players. I think if they'd just not gone down the PvP extraction shooter road, making it co-op instead, they could've had some real success.

Anyone remember Holly? She was a terminally ill AC player, who's final wish was to take down Oolutanga. Masses of people got together for that raid, wiping out everything they ran into. They took the boss down to near dead, and Holly got the kill shot. I've heard different numbers but I'd say there were close to a thousand players. I was 2 and a half levels too low, and spent 18 hours, non stop, killing wasps in the Phyntos Menace dungeon to get to that level and join the raid. People signing out late at night were amazed to see me still in there, surrounded by a wall of corpses, the next morning. Only time I came out was to make new arrows. We did what Holly asked us to do. Sadly she passed away not long after.

A buddy at work got me hooked into AC, some time in 2003. We played together for a while til he moved on to WOW. By this time I was hooked. I played AC for about 3-4 more years, making friends all over the world. My original guild mates were from Pennsylvania, Texas, California, Florida and others. After a while I moved to WOW, again playing with my buddy. But I always kept AC in reserve, and often came back to it. It was a sad day when the servers shut down but it could be understood. I was on Frostfell, and the last time I logged in, there were about 300 on line. The vast majority were bots. That said, I just found out AC is alive and has a bunch of private servers. Loaded it on Friday and spent the weekend getting reacquainted. It was like coming home after a long while. I"ve also put over a thousand hours in Project Gorgon, being developed by some of the original devs. The feel of PG is much the same as AC. It's on steam, go check it out.

21:22 Small nitpick: Conroy's last project as Batman is _Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths_ (Part 3), an animated film that was released a few days ago AFAICT. It's possible he recorded this prior to recording SS, but at least SS is just the penultimate, rather than final, piece of media released with him in his iconic roll. RIP, Mr. Conroy, you will always be my Batvoice.
