This isn’t how Puccini envisioned how the opera should end. Alfonso did something which was heinous by using his own ideas not the ones of Puccini. Alfonso met with Puccini before his death. He was dying from throat cancer. He was due to have a procedure to remove the tumour but Puccini died not long after the operation and never came out of the anaesthesia they gave him. The meeting was to show what Puccini planned for the finale. Toscanini was also at the meeting. What they got was a composer trying to out his style in the finale which shows badly. Yes he did the job and finished the work but he finished the work in his style not in Puccini’s style. Toscanini wasn’t impressed and did something unusual at the first performance. When he came to the last note that Puccini wrote he out down his baton and turned around to the audience and said no more. Basically he stopped in tribute to Puccini’s musicianship.

Isn’t this the piece that Rimsky Korsakov butchered. I prefer the original Orchestration by Mussorgsky himself. It’s not as furiously fast as the RK orchestration. RK also changed the music at the end with another tune from Mussorgskys repertoire. He didn’t need to do this as the original work ws fine as it was. It is a revelation to those who have never heard the Mussorgsky original.

The song that the chorus is singing is a Russian folksong. Interestingly this tune appears in a choral work by Sydney Campbell called Praise to God in the Highest. The tune forms most of the work.
