    I have never used himi, this was the first gouache set I’ve ever used. From comments on my other gouache videos it seems artist loft wanted to do a copy cat of how himi looked but I can’t say the quality is better or worse. From my understanding himi is also geared towards being affordable for students which means it’s likely less pigmented and has more binders. My guess is that they are comparable. And thank you!

    I've been wanting to make myself a palette for a long time and found this to be a very helpful video, @JNDS.Creates. One thing you may have learned already is that you can get depth attachments for your rolling pin. Most of the ones I've seen are a silicone band that you just put on the end of the rolling pin to lift it up at a uniform height from the surface you're rolling. They're available in the kitchen department at many stores or online. They're used for rolling out cookies or pie crusts at a uniform thickness and would work equally well for polymer clay. I'm off to check out your other videos now!

    Comparing yourself to others would definitely hurt your self-esteem if not done in proper way but I think a lot of artists struggle with that especially because of social media nowadays. I think the best art advice I ever heard was "Just do it." So just make the comic book, just go to the artist alley, just give it a try and once you have then you can learn from the experience and would naturally find things you would want to improve without even having to compare to others. Also, I really love how you painted the sky and the clouds, when you went in again with the blues everything just popped! Not sure if "counting successes" ever crossed my mind to be honest. I'm really just here to have a fun time with my art. 😅 As you mentioned, I think if you completed work for clients or have finished big projects, those things can certainly be used as reminders that you're capable and could help rid the self-doubt. Your painting turned out really good! I like all the details in the rocks and the steps too. - Rozay

    comparison is the thief of joy! but ya i see so many people online comparing themselves to others and I'm guilty of it too it really is hard when you think you should be somewhere your not. after i made this video i went to make my website, i can confirm that "just do it" is the best thing to do. the process has been a stressful but rewarding ride but not near as "terrifying" as i had hyped it up to be. and thanks so much for the complements, i really like how this one turned out! it really did pop! thanks again - Nicole

    I LOVE gouache as in its own, but i also think watercolour and gouache are a match made in heaven. btw, for this piece are you using fabriano studio paper? i dont like that paper much for watercolour, but what do you think for gouache?

  • @JNDS.Creates
    @JNDS.CreatesАй бұрын

    I’m not actually sure the name of this paper, it is fabriano and it’s student grade and is supposed to be something like 20% cotton (I got it bulk from Jackson’s and I can’t remember the details). I’ve used 100+ sheets of it for watercolour (and your right it has a lot of draw backs but I couldn’t say no to the price) for the gouache I don’t mind it, I feel like the gouache is very forgiving on this paper compared to watercolour. The texture of this paper leaves something to be desired in any medium lol.

    Love the video! Now, as someone who has a HIMI equivalent of this jelly gouache, I can say that unsealing the wrappers are terrible in any brand, it's not exclusive to artists loft. This brand, unfortunately, has a worse quality than HIMI, because HIMI, despite being student quality, was made as quick tool for chinese students for their entrance exam (?) paintings in art academies. I just finished watching the video (i posted the first paragraph as i was watching the video, haha) and I am glad that you like the paint, despite the limitations of the brand!

  • @JNDS.Creates
    @JNDS.CreatesАй бұрын

    Oh my, so that’s a good heads up for anyone looking to get any brand of jelly gouache! Cause that that was torture opening them. And I love the background information of why Himi Came about! I’ve painted about 5 more paintings with this gouache and ya it’s for sure student grade, I’ve been letting my kids use it lots. I’ve found that it works well as dried gouache on a palette used more like watercolour AND paper makes a massive difference, I tried mixed media, pulp watercolour and cotton, of course the cotton made this paint way easier to use. I think my final thoughts are that this paint should be used by highschoolers whose parents don’t want to break the bank but still give them something that is usable. I may make a third video with closing thoughts of this brand. And Thanks so much for your comment!

    I love slow art. I am a slow, deliberate artist that takes time with every step of the process. I was brought up with the notion that if you're going to do something, you might as well do it right - it can sound harsh, but it has taught me to not be afraid to do what I REALLY want since I don't have that "oh well, good enough" mentality because of learning to be considerate of what I do. Nope, does not affect the creative process, I promise, you will still be creative af. I also like watching this with other artists... like one more complex painting broken down into 2 to 3 videos would be so awesome to watch from people but it's also not for me to tell others how to do things. I really enjoy how unique your art is!

    I'm not entirely sure if the sculpey glaze is water proof, since it says it can be washed with water and soap on the packaging. I think what you did is fine, just I would have sealed it with thin coats of epoxy resin instead.

  • @JNDS.Creates
    @JNDS.Creates5 ай бұрын

    The glaze on my original has lasted 3 years, I use a Mr clean magic eraser to clean every so often and it’s held up well. The biggest issue is staining. After three years it did wear in some areas, a solid clean and multi coat reglaze would be enough to restore it. I currently don’t own epoxy resin but would love to work with it one day.

  • @charlottesmom
    @charlottesmom2 ай бұрын

    I’ve heard the sealer can deteriorate if exposed to water long term, I’m going to craft a glazed one and a non glazed to see what is better. Polymer clay is by nature waterproof as is (after baking) so it should be fine by itself.

    ❤ Hi there! I am a watercolour artist in Winnipeg. Your palette is amazing! I have looked everywhere for just the “right” palette and like you, I don’t want it too big or too heavy like the heavy ceramic studio palettes. This seems like a great solution! I LOVE your little dividers that still let you use the centre of the mixing area. Can I ask if the sculpy glaze is lasting well? Does the paint spread on it like ceramic or bubble up like on plastic palettes? Does it stain with staining colours? I had considered using a resin coat but it is just like plastic and the paints won’t spread out. Thank you for the video - it was very helpful.

  • @JNDS.Creates

    Hello fellow prairie Canadian! I find the paint does sit where you put it fairly well, I can move it around and it will stay put to some degree. The glaze works well in three layers but be mindful of some hard drying paints can pull up the polymer itself (I found this happened with French ultramarine from Daniel smith - note that there was a defect in my polymer palette in that well where it lifted) my oldest palette is old and very stained, the main culprit for staining is my pthalo blue and my perylene green. I do have a couple other palette videos, one taking a look at my original palette as a sort of review, you can see better in that video how they age. I’m happy to help any way I can! Best wishes.
