    Top Notch! Looks very well thought out too! I'm currently making a canvas canoe sprayskirt along the Northwinds design (lace down style) Use alot of Aquaseal neoprene glue for wetsuits and plan to preset the webbing along edges before hand sewing. Hadn't tried their other formulas like FD yet. Good luck!

    I’d like to find a skirt for my Sea Eagle 393RL like you have on yours. Where do you suggest getting one? I don’t see any on the Sea Eagle website. Thank you. I enjoyed your video. I’d like to paddle that one day.

    Hi. Do you think my 393RL would handle the trip OK? It’s the single version of your kayak; 12’10”.

  • @fartherout9887
    @fartherout98872 ай бұрын

    Hi! I've never tried the 393rl, so it's hard to say. I think that without a deck, kayaking in the Keys is probably not a good idea as you would take a lot of water in because of waves. If you're able to make a deck, then it will depend on how many miles you are able to paddle per day, and in what sea state you can paddle. I find wind to be the worst element for inflatable kayaks. Best is to try paddling long distances in different conditions and see how you feel.

    Brilliant job. I've got a sevylor pointer K2 which comes with zip in spray decks that are great. I don't know why they don't commercially make universal ones like you've made. Just to keep spray and drips from the paddle out. But again good job and like the way you put tubing in for the opening to hold the spray deck.

  • @fartherout9887

    Thanks!! Yes I was surprised not to find any option on the market. So I used existing decks as inspiration, the K2 sevylor pointer among others.

    It seems there’s many options for free camping on the keys & islands on this route… did you do that? Did you find much opportunity to hammock camp? What bug repellent do you recommend & what gear did you find to be least useful?

  • @fartherout9887
    @fartherout98878 ай бұрын

    It was not easy to find places to stop/camp, at least on the Atlantic side of the Keys, as most of the shoreline is either Mangroves or private properties. We had to plan ahead and find spots on Google earth and made sure it would be allowed/tolerated to camp there, and when not possible, we booked a hotel room or a campsite. Hammock camping would have been tricky, there aren't so many big trees, and rarely close together, we're glad we took the tent. I think we used some deet-based product as repellent, it did good against mosquitos but not that good against no-see-ums. But it really helped though. I read somewhere that deet based product are damaging gear it comes in contact with, so that might be something to be careful about. Something we brought that we ended up not using was our sleeping bags, it was really hot at night and sleeping bags were useless.our sleeping bag liners were plenty enough for a May paddling trip in the Keys.

    When I saw your video for the first time. It was December 5th 2019 I was in the hospital. I went into the hospital in November on Thanksgiving, I was in the ER and then they passed me to the ICU. I was in the ICU for 3 weeks and then I saw your video. I quickly called my sister and told her life is too short I want to do this. A month later I came out of the tired and drained, unfortunately then covid hit us I love kayaking and I also love fishing. You guys inspired me to get out and try new things, thank you so much for sharing your journey with us.

    Well done and some great scenery. I don't think I could take a 20kg pack like that! I think you should get rid of that tent, TNF are over rated, and it looks heavy. Get a walking pole tent, they're strong and light weight. A lighter pack makes it easier and more enjoyable, or you could've done it in 5 days ;)

  • @fartherout9887
    @fartherout9887 Жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Yes, the tent and my pack are definitely on the heavy side. The tent is 2.8kg and the pack 2.3kg, I could save around 2 or 3kg with more adapted gear for solo hiking. that would help a lot.it's nice to carry a 4 season tent though (when it does not leak 🥴) as you can sleep in rough conditions. I also took too much food. I finished the hike with 600g of food.. A few things to improve but it was still amazing!

    We made the deck ourselves with waterproof fabric Velcro and PVC pipes for the structure. It was not easy but doable for someone with no sewing experience like me. And we bought the yellow skirts, as they are regular sea kayak skirts. I got your email, I'll send you some info about what material we used and how we put everything together.

    Hi ! Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and beautiful photoshots, that's amazing ! I'm preparing an expedition in Laponia for that winter and i'm still seeking for a high performance sleep bag for very negative temperatures (-30°C). What was yours please ? Thanks in advance for your reply.

  • @fartherout9887
    @fartherout9887 Жыл бұрын

    Hello! Thanks for your comment! Our sleeping bags are "Bloody Mary" from Valandré. It is rated at -5°C confort. www.valandre.com/sleeping-bags/bloody-mary.html The manufacturer says the confort limit is more around -15°C. I think it was between -10 and -15 in the tent that night, and we had a fleece sleeping bag liner, and all our warm clothes. I think a 4 seasons tent really help with keeping heat inside. We slept pretty well. For -30°C, you can look at the other models from Valandré, it's a well known French brand for sleeping bags: www.valandre.com/sleeping-bags/odin-neo.html www.valandre.com/sleeping-bags/thor-neo.html When we were looking to buy our sleeping bags, I looked at Thermarest, Mountain Hardware, Feathered Friends, and Western Mountaineering. But we are really happy with our Valandré. I bought them thinking we would never sleep below -15. But our first night using them proved me wrong. Also, the sleeping bag felt a little damp in the morning, as the water leaving your body condensate inside the sleeping bag as the temperature is so cold outside. They had lost little bit of loft. I think that a second night in such temperature would have not been so pleasant. I searched online for solutions, one of them is to sleep in a vapor barrier liner (pretty much a big trash bag that does not let the humidity out), you are wet but your sleeping bag is not. That sounds pretty miserable. Or to sleep with a combination of sleeping bag and synthetic quilt so that the water condensate in the quilt. Just something to consider, as it will happen if you sleep several nights in a row. Hope this help ! Laponia sounds amazing ! I hope you'll have the best time and that you will stay warm !
