We all know what it feels like, when a friend drags you to the disco when you’re not in the mood. I guess that’s why Darcy spouts off. I think the 1995 version captures that best, because the’ve kept most of the original dialogue. The others make the insult more personal to Lizzy, rather than as a general disdainful comment towards the social setting in general. 'Come, Darcy,' said he, 'I must have you dance. I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner. You had much better dance.' 'I certainly shall not. You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner. At such an assembly as this it would be insupportable. Your sisters are engaged, and there is not another woman in the room whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with.' 'I would not be so fastidious as you are,' cried Bingley, 'for a kingdom! Upon my honour, I never met with so many pleasant girls in my life as I have this evening; and there are several of them you see uncommonly pretty.' 'You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room,' said Mr. Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Bennet. 'Oh! she is the most beautiful creature I ever beheld! But there is one of her sisters sitting down just behind you, who is very pretty, and I dare say very agreeable. Do let me ask my partner to introduce you.' 'Which do you mean?' and turning round, he looked for a moment at Elizabeth, till catching her eye, he withdrew his own and coldly said, 'She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time with me.' Mr. Bingley followed his advice. Mr. Darcy walked off; and Elizabeth remained with no very cordial feelings towards him. She told the story, however, with great spirit among her friends; for she had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in any thing ridiculous.

I like most of the reactions but Jennifer Ehle's is my favorite. Being hurt at an insult is a natural reaction, and we see that with The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Keira Knightley. All three of the above blend in a nice amount of humor to their responses, which is accurate to the book. But with Ehle, what I love is how quickly and determinedly she is able to transmute the insult into humor. You see this beautiful moment on her face as she's in shock, not quite sure how she should take this. And a moment later, she's like, "Dude, what do I care? I just met this guy. He's a stranger to me and his opinions don't matter." Even in her recounting of the story later to Jane we can see there's no hurt left, just humor. This strong sense of self was one of the things that always drew me to this version of Lizzie. Knightley's Lizzie and Lizzie in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries both use humor to overcome the slight, but both of these I think are lashing out to wound back. Their hackles are up. Ehle's Lizzie just kinda lets it roll off her. Again, hurt is natural, but I admire the ability to let slights roll off you more. I also like Colin Firth's Darcy the most in this scene (although Matthew McFadyen is a close second) because of his reactions. There is a miniscule smile on Firth's face and he acknowledges Bingley is enjoying himself with Jane. Remember Bingley and Jane just met so Darcy feels no fear of Bingley being truly attached. And I love when Darcy sees Lizzie walk away and talk to Charlotte and giggle. What is he thinking? "Oh crap, she overheard me, I'm a jerk?" Or "Huh, that response is unusual. Intriguing?" Or "Crap, they're laughing at me?" Which would fit nicely into the book again, as later Lizzie pinpoints his best punishment in a conversation with Caroline - to laugh at him. I enjoy that we as an audience can't quite read him, leaving us to conjecture. Just like Lizzie.

Whoever wrote the screenplay for the bookstore version did not understand the Darcy character as written by Jane. He is an introvert who doesn't like talking to strangers and so makes any excuse to his friend. Unfortunately he's overheard. In the bookstore version he's just plain rude!
@yasmin36773 жыл бұрын
darcy is a introvert, by sure. But introverts are not necessarily shy or social awkward, and darcy on the book is not like that at all. He's very confident in his present and value. He doesnt like talking to strangers not because he is unconfortable with them but because he hates fakeness so he cant fake to be interest in people he never met

Look! The 1940s one was by FAR the worst interpretation of the book, but it will always hold a special place in my heart because 1. It's the first one I saw, and my mom would cuddle with me and watch it whenever I was sick, 2. it introduced me to Jane Austen and encouraged me to love reading and 3. it was the cause of my first ever celebrity crush: Sir Laurence Oliver.

Whenever a period piece is made in pre 1970s hollywood, they always have the 1940s style still leeching into their hair and other things(the period they were filmed) Its like western movies and the love interest has 1950s hair despite it being 1880.

Is the Indian modern one any good? Seemed like a refreshing premise/transformation in a setting that could allow the class discrepancy/prejudice present in the books to remain valid and understandable to a modern palate.
