I'm a librarian with a passion for helping others navigate the insane world of information. After hours, I read voraciously then talk about it here on my channel MsTerriB - Terri Talks Books. I also maintain a book blog called Terri Talks Books if you're more interested in the written word. See links below.

Just discovered your channel and subscribed! Great to "meet" you and discover the books you are reading. Take care!
Lonesome Dove was great. Dodge City I see on your shelf was really good too. Another really great read and nonfiction piece of history about the west is Empire Of The Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne
Gorgeous beautiful ❤❤❤❤
I tried The Waves and DNFed it. I read both To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway, but they were both hard for me. So when I got to The Waves, I just gave up. I live Room of One’s Own but Virginia’s fiction is over my head. Glad you had such a good reading month!
Umming is just a way to tell your audience that you're thinking and not to interupt, and "you know" is shorthand for "are you following me?" Umm, there's no need to get paranoid about it... you know?
Hi there - it is a long video and I watched only the first half so far. I do want to come back and watch the rest. The book about the Japanese horticulture sounds fascinating and I'll put it on my TBR list. The Virginia Woolf book I will probably never read. I generally don't do well with stream of consciousness novels, and I've never read anything by Woolf. She's not on my TBR right now... but I wanted to hear what you had to say about her book! You do give good book summaries!
My step son is a fan of Louie Lamore and I’ve read a few of these books and really enjoyed them. Hope to read more.
A Year in the Maine Woods was a lovely read! I haven’t read your new Beaver book but I did read a different one. Super interesting subject!
I feel like I see Mrs. Polifax a lot and I have never picked any up. I’ll be interested to see what you think. I really enjoyed this haul, Terri! ❤
I agree, the cover of The Sun Down Motel is beautiful and intriguing. I've been wanting to read that. I read one of her other books and liked it. I'm also reading westerns this month. I just finished one by Louis L'Amour. I'd like to read A Year in the Maine Woods. That sounds like my kind of memoir. River Spirit looks good too.
Oh My Goodness Ms Terri! I am setting up now to record my review of "Education Of A Wandering Man! So, I advise you to Not watch it until you have finished reading your copy. I did however post a Tongue-In-Cheek video of the brand new 2024 Elton John biography. And only one person has commented because I believe they are thinking I am ...simple? Well, I do appear that way in the video. Enough about me! Louis Lamour, once he signed with Bantam Books he stayed with them his whole career. And, what are you running from? Or who are you running from? You are struggling to Not say Y'all. You are trying so hard to hide your Southern accent that it makes me wonder if you are hiding from your past! I know, you say you aren't from the South. I watched the video. Okay, we will stick with that story. I enjoyed this video and if you really want to know, it is called, "James On The Range"! So Thank you, Have a good read. -James (On The Range)
Thank you for the shoutout! I hope you enjoy the Mrs. Pollifax books. You have some wonderfully eclectic books in this video. 😊
Tom Lake is also on my tbr and I’m currently reading Annie John, excited to know your thoughts ☺️
Great video! Really appreciated your thoughts on the novel.
Hahah. Y'all sound Southern to me...-James
I just found on my channel where you mentioned me in this video. Sorry I never viewed or commented on this. I'm still learning my way around Booktube. Thank you for the explanation. But like you said you already addressed it. Thanks again -James
Well, my computer is running amuck! I left a comment and later I thought I saw the comment on another booktuber's post. So I deleted the comment because it was addressed to you. Now I see that my original comment I posted here is gone, I guess I deleted it? I forgot what I wrote. Anyway, bad and scary stuff follow me even online. I subscribed...whew! *sigh* . -James & Bella
Hi James! I did see the comment that got deleted. I was able to see it since they come to my email and are viewable that way even if the comment disappears. Thanks for subscribing!
Great. I see you have a new video. I'm going to watch it now. -James
Hello Ms. Terri! Sorry for the late response, I am a college student, and finals week was wild! Yes, you pronounce my name correctly! When I asked the question, I was reading some books; however, exams came, and stopped reading. Now that is summer, I will use your advice! Thank you so much!
Hope your summer reading is going well!
That’s really cool that you inherited your grandma’s journals. My grandma recently passed away and I inherited her journals. She was in the marines during WWII so I’m sure they’re chock full of interesting things. I have vague plans of publishing them into a book one day but we’ll see if it ever happens.
Your grandma's journals sound like they will be quite interesting!
It happens!
❤❤❤
I enjoyed both the review and the thumbnail! ❤
I know, TBR's are rarely followed to perfection. I think most people are mood readers even when they try not to be. I've never read an Ann Patchett novel but I have The Dutch House out in my shed. I'm intrigued by the LA book though, since I have a special interest in reading books set in California. I'm looking into the Book Naturalist's Club - thanks for telling us about it.
Julia Alvarez! I was surprised to hear her name. I read In the Time of the Butterflies last year and didn't know about her fiction. Yes, she's from the Dominican Republic. Oh, another Linda main character! You know, Mary Stewart named one of her MC's Linda Martin (my name) ... somehow I never thought of my name being worthy of a MC in a romance novel, but some authors liked it enough. I'm going to get that novel (soon) so I didn't listen to the spoiler. 😊
Tom Lake was so enjoyable. She says so much in that one, but with such a light touch.
It is easy to make mistakes in videos and I think most Booktubers understand as it happens to all of us.
I'm somehow attracted to all details of the Old West. I know what you mean by 'information dense' but you stuck with it and that's impressive. Interesting how the gunfight at the OK corral lasted only a moment but had such long lasting effects, not only with the deaths, but also it has come to be part of our collective history and achieved legendary status whether we know the details or not. I'd like to read the book. And yes, I liked the thumbnail. I had a similar one for my video about June on the Range last year... I guess I'll do that again this June as I plan to participate in the event again.
I hope you do read it! I need to go look at your video. I've never hear about June on the Range. Sounds interesting!
Really enjoyed this Terri! The only reason I know of the Barbizan is because of the Sylvia Plath connection. Interesting that so many famous people stayed there. I read Book Lovers last year and thought it was cute.
I think you mentioned your diet recently and I said “I’d love to hear more about it” I am very interested in what people eat-mostly because I have never really made any effort to eat strictly.
I admire your commitment to your healthy eating plan. I am not that strong! 😂
Can you elaborate on what happened towards the end of the book that surprised and pleased you?
I wish I could answer you! This review was from 10 years ago and I apparently don't have a good enough memory to remember what it was, lol! I think I need to re-read this though, and hopefully I will be able to answer this question at that time. Thank you for asking.
Awesome, hope you find the time to re-read and share your thoughts! Dying to know, since this was the only substantial review I found on KZread. I liked the ending, but I cannot articulating why. The final mystery in the potato shack is a painting titled “Now it is women turn” which depicts a harsh scene of the final day of a harsh war, where each character in this vast scene is given a unique story. This is a beautiful symbol, that I cannot pretend to understand what it means. My best explanation is that Rabo is saying that Men have traditionally been in power, thus they are responsible for causing the wars that lead to both the suffering of men and women. It is time we allow woman to assume the authority. This interpretation certainly aligns with Marilee thoughts on war. She says: “The whole point of war is to put women everywhere in that condition. It's always men against women, with the men only pretending to fight among themselves.” When Rabo titles his war painting “It’s women’s turn,” he is echoing Marilee’s message and asserting that the world would be more peaceful if women were allowed to lead. I’m sympathetic to this thesis, and I think the prose Kurt uses to articulate it is beautiful. However, I think Marliee and Rabo are over-simplifying the cause of war, and the solution for preventing it. For example, gender-equality in Israel is great. There are many Women in political and military positions. Despite this, Israel is currently waging a genocide in Gaza. If someone took a photo of Gaza and called it “Now it’s women’s turn,” I think it would be off-the-mark. I don’t believe you can view war as strictly “male vs female” phenomena, although I certainly agree that gender equality is a necessary, but insufficient step to a more peaceful existence. That was longer than I intended! Anyway, it would great to get your insight, especially from a female perspective
Very interesting! I appreciate hearing about why you started Booktube and what it has done for you (help in your profession). You started before I did! And you're back! I think that's phenomenal. I started because I wanted to learn to talk better, and it has helped a lot. Plus I wanted the focus on books so it would encourage me to read more. It has. I noticed you make a lot of long videos. I will tell you... I just subscribed, but I don't watch long videos usually because of the time involved. I will watch videos less than 25 minutes long. I hope you post the shorter videos frequently so I can get to know you and your reading choices better.
Thank you for visiting, subscribing, and mostly for commenting! I love to actually talk to people on BookTube. As a personal goal, I am trying to get my videos more into the 20-30 minute range but that obviously has not happened yet. I did just record a chatty Q&A video, that I should get uploaded sometime later today, and I kept it to about 27 minutes - yay me!
The Barbizon sounds fascinating, I've added it to my TBR!
Okay, do I hear a hint of a "Southern" accent? I do not like to say where I am located and I don't expect you to if that's your policy. But if it isn't your policy, don't give pin point details but what State are you from? Or not. Thank you -James. P.S. I subscribed
I'm from the Southwest. Do we have an accent? ;) I will be addressing this in a Q&A video that I hope to get up later today.
Hmmm … Charlie just announced a poetry readathon. Maybe I will pick up some more Mary Oliver. 🌱🧐
I enjoyed listening to this. I don’t have a strong desire to read Babel. I’m glad to hear a middling review as every other review I’ve heard has been raving about it.
I listened to this while driving over to meet my parents for Easter brunch. I really enjoyed it. I think I mentioned this on your North Woods review but I found Jam on the Vine really excellent. I also found Killers really compelling too. You had a great selection this month. I’d be glad to hear about your eating style in a future video.
Hi Emily! I will be answering your question about eating style in a Q&A I hope to post later today.
Thanks for adding your thoughts. There are so many varied reviews on this one and no one has yet managed to make me want to read it. I have not been interested in the plot from the beginning and it's big just to see if I agree with all the criticism.
Even before you mentioned Nathaniel, your description of the ghostly presences made me think of my trip to Concord, MA. Everywhere I went there-the Alcott house, the Hawthorne house, Walden Pond-made me think of all those who had gone before in that area. Yay for Jam on the Vine! Excited to hear your thoughts. I read it a few years ago after hearing about it on Didi’s channel and I’m shocked it never blew up on Booktube.
I was on the fence about getting this book but after i saw this review a month ago I decided to purchase. I very much enjoyed it! This is my 9th Vonnegut. The book was such a pleasant read. I put this at #4 on my list of Vonnegut so far. So Thank You for doing a book review on Bluebeard!
I’m so glad you liked the book and that you found the review encouraging!
You did a really good job! So i read this 3 months ago and I was hesitant. I don't read many books written after 2000. I find them not well-written for the most part, and modern book covers are often ghastly😅. So I read this because Rick MacDonnell did a review for it, and so he convinced me. When I say that I can not stop thinking about this book, I'm not kidding. I can't think of a book that has kept me returning to it over and over again in my mind like this one. It's on par with Outer Dark by McCarthy. North Woods was perfect! Every single sentence, storyline, character, and the land! Oh, I loved every minute of it. I actually think if i could take only 5 books to a deserted island, this would make it. It's that good!
Thank you Nikki! I’m glad my little chat made sense! This book seems to be a mostly love it or hate it read. It’s good to hear from someone else who loved it. I too am still thinking about it and plan to re-read at some point.
This book is so beautifully written, by a very skilled author. I finished it yesterday and purposefully s l o w e d down my reading at the end to savor the last few delicious pages. It’s incredible to conjure how Daniel Mason conceived of this story and the vibrancy of the setting and characters. (Watch some of his KZread interviews for more on that!). I will certainly reread this book. And my next hike through my nearby forest will never be the same. This book is a gift. Thanks for your comments MsTerri.B.
@@barbaramcfadden527 yes, this book is a gift. I thought it would be overhyped and underwhelming. Boy, was I wrong. Matter of fact, I’ve never been more wrong. The biggest bummer is that I can never read it again for the first time.
@@barbaramcfadden527 I purposefully slowed down my reading of this book too! I will indeed look up some of those interviews. Thank you for the suggestion!
Well done Terri! Terri you need to read The Defender by Ethan Michaeli. Once I heard it mentioned in Jam on the Vine I found The Defender and I buddy read it last year and it was definitely one of my top reads of 2023. You had a very nice reading month in February. It was full of variety.
The Defender is now going on my TBR list 😄
Hello Ms Terri! Good video. Any suggestions on how to be consistent with reading?
I've been thinking about your question and believe it might be a good idea if I make a video with some of those suggestions, so watch for that! In the meantime, I will say that choosing books you really want to read and of immediate interest helps build consistency. Also, setting a time each day (or whatever timeframe you choose) to read helps with consistency. Thank you for your comment. Great question!
Diana, I will be answering this in a Q&A video that I hope to post later today.
@@MsTerriB Excited!!
The templars story was the best. Just kidding he did not have one. Sol wientraub and the baby was the best because I have daughters and that would suck.
I am so curious to read this one mainly because I’ve had so many bookish friends who loved it or didn’t.
I DNF’ed the book at page 245. I started out really liking it but by page 245 I didn’t feel the story was strong enough to keep me engaged.
Wow! Impressed by how many Japanese books you read. So glad you loved the Renkl!
What a good reading month. I really like Before the Coffe gets cold series.
Best of luck with your goals for this year!
I read Small Things in December and was really impressed with it considering how short it is. I’m glad you had a great reading month.
