Even before you mentioned Nathaniel, your description of the ghostly presences made me think of my trip to Concord, MA. Everywhere I went there-the Alcott house, the Hawthorne house, Walden Pond-made me think of all those who had gone before in that area. Yay for Jam on the Vine! Excited to hear your thoughts. I read it a few years ago after hearing about it on Didi’s channel and I’m shocked it never blew up on Booktube.

I am so curious to read this one mainly because I’ve had so many bookish friends who loved it or didn’t.

You did a really good job! So i read this 3 months ago and I was hesitant. I don't read many books written after 2000. I find them not well-written for the most part, and modern book covers are often ghastly😅. So I read this because Rick MacDonnell did a review for it, and so he convinced me. When I say that I can not stop thinking about this book, I'm not kidding. I can't think of a book that has kept me returning to it over and over again in my mind like this one. It's on par with Outer Dark by McCarthy. North Woods was perfect! Every single sentence, storyline, character, and the land! Oh, I loved every minute of it. I actually think if i could take only 5 books to a deserted island, this would make it. It's that good!

Thank you Nikki! I’m glad my little chat made sense! This book seems to be a mostly love it or hate it read. It’s good to hear from someone else who loved it. I too am still thinking about it and plan to re-read at some point.

This book is so beautifully written, by a very skilled author. I finished it yesterday and purposefully s l o w e d down my reading at the end to savor the last few delicious pages. It’s incredible to conjure how Daniel Mason conceived of this story and the vibrancy of the setting and characters. (Watch some of his KZread interviews for more on that!). I will certainly reread this book. And my next hike through my nearby forest will never be the same. This book is a gift. Thanks for your comments MsTerri.B.

@@barbaramcfadden527 yes, this book is a gift. I thought it would be overhyped and underwhelming. Boy, was I wrong. Matter of fact, I’ve never been more wrong. The biggest bummer is that I can never read it again for the first time.

I DNF’ed the book at page 245. I started out really liking it but by page 245 I didn’t feel the story was strong enough to keep me engaged.
