Marine biologist, aquarium scientist and aquaculturist. Ever since I got into the hobby in middle school, I was always fascinated by the science behind maintaining live aquatic animals and plants. As a scientists I am interested in how what we know about aquatic husbandry can help us understand more about and protect the worlds aquatic ecosystems. Join me as we bring fish keeping to a science!

I want an Octopus tattoo so bad now, lol I have a question for you, i just read your info on here, so you might be able to help. I have a 60-gallon aquarium, and i dont know if i want to do fresh water or salt water. Which one is easier to take care of and won't take a lot of funds to maintain once it's going? There are things i want that are fresh water like the Elephant nose, they look so much like dolphins or the little fish that look like tiny whales (i cant think of the name) or butterfly fish. Then again, if i do salt water, i can get an Octopus, and i love them. I had a 50 gallon aquarium that i had a small eel in and he only ate if i hand feed him so it was hard to find someone to come take care of him if i went on vacation. I ended up giving a friend of mine everything because her son is non verbal autistic fell in love with my set up and i knew how happy it made him so for his bday i gave everything to him, eel in all. Now i have this tank, but im not sure if i wanna do fresh water again. Any info would be greatly appreciated... Sorry its so long
All Cephlapods are smart! They are also like us evolving to live on land like we did! After we kill ourselves they may be the next species to rule the planet!
Hi Phantom!! Hes so graceful ❤️
Top 3, Great White, Tiger, Bull
For me it’s epaulette shark, horned shark, whiptail shark
@@prof.fishtanks I wish I could remember the name correctly, but isn't there one called a "Chain Catshark?" It's the most beautiful by marking hands down. My all time favorite ocean creature is either the Blue Ring octopus or the tiny Blue Dragon sea slug.
@@1Vapersianprincessyes it’s the chain cat shark (Scyliorhinus retifer). Also a beautiful species!
@prof.fishtanks that's what I thought, I love everything about the ocean. When I was younger, I used to want to live in a lighthouse and take care of it for the ships coming in and out. I couldn't imagine life not being able to wake up and not smell the ocean waters. When I was younger, I went to WVa to visit my best friends family. As soon as we came close to home, I could smell the water and woke up fast. That's the smell of home. Sorry so long 😂 Happy 4th of July if you're in the US
Replay Crew...

Dang it, I took a nap and missed everyone's live stream 😢
It’s ok naps are important!
Interesting event review from a personal perspective . Beautiful red root floaters. 😍
I think that's where it begins for a ot of us...they are fascinating
Great LIVE today
lol, i am NOT good with games....fun listening though
The goal was to learn so now you should know what the scientific names for some of these organisms are!
Pretty good run down for those new to this . The "Real" names are very important escpecially to you all out there who are or are wanting to keep fish that are on the CARES list . Don't be worried about pronouncing them either. Even old timers butcher the names at times lol
Looks like some zoanthus, Montipora cap? Green star polyps (I don't remember the genus on hand) and a sinularia in the back?
I have no scientific knowledge of these...
That’s the point now you’re one step closer! Lol
I think this is amazing, ive been preaching the use of latin names over common, as hobbyists with no background in science it can become difficult to properly Identify certain species. If i can at least get the correct genus its a step in the right direction. Latin can be hard to pronounce, i just say with confidence and hope the point gets accross. One tip i got to help remember all these different names is just repitition, write it down, then again and again. It helped me remember, but i still forget sometimes lol
I have been working a lot on trying to remember scientific names and it is HARD!
@@prof.fishtanksone of my favorite native aquatic plants "Curly PondWeed" is Potamageton Crispus, which is not in the hobby, and I constantly get it confused with Aponogeton Crispus, or "Ruffled Cape Pondweed" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 They don't look the same, but "Cape Pondweeds" from Africa and Madagascar don't look anything like "Pondweed" stem plants found in North America... And then the Latin Name is SO similar sounding on top of it 🤦
Not a chance...but they are pretty
sorry i missed most of this today
I watched this replay and enjoyed it. Maybe turn on the plant lights before you stream (doesn't matter if it's on a timer 😅) ? I do buy a lot of plants, and I am glad I found a new shop to buy them from! Thanks 🙏
I agree would have been nice to have the lights on but they aren’t set to a external timer it’s built in and if I turned them on it would override it and would just be annoying to reprogram so I don’t bother touching it lol.
What great event the keystone clash! Great video , im your 100th subscriber 🎉
Thank you so much for the support 🥹
@@prof.fishtanks your very welcome!
Those red plants are tempting .....
They’re calling your name ☺️

I am listening now Scottie!! Lol
I am a reuser too...save so much shipping stuff...just in case
Dangit..i missed it
We missed ya especially Scottie lol
it was great meeting you in person this past september at the clash.
Thanks for the video 👍👍👍
Always a pleasure to see you at the clash. Until next year my friend.
thanks for subbing Prof..... all of the items i got from atlantic aquariums was fabulous. i did a video.
Kinda small for a betta
Actually it’s the smallest I recommend. I personally recommend at least a 2.5 gallon aquarium and the fact this aquarium comes with a heater and a filtration system that isn’t blowing the fish everywhere but is gentle is another plus for me. If you look at the natural environment of bettas you’d be surprised.
If you know how to convert a PowerPoint to a link please let me know! Also make sure to follow me on Instagram @prof_fishtanks for updates!
Would you think this light can grow low light plants?
I believe so. Anubias and buceaphelandra are two species of plants that do well in low light and actually prefer it. Java fern also another one. Just need to keep in mind not to use plants that grow big as this isn’t a big tank. Regular pruning will need to be done.
Great video
Great video! Very helpful and made me decide to purchase one of these tanks!
So I did some research and found out that Fluval does have the heater as a separate purchase! Will be getting them in for my online store! www.atlanticaquariums.com/product-page/fluval-p-series-heater
The plants look great!!! You’re free to grab more plants whenever
