I'm in a pumpkin contest with my Dad for next yr. I'll have it irrigated. Probably add some peat to your soil mix for covering vines.

If you leave the pumpkin longer on the vine once it's already orange Will the pumpkin still grow larger ? When do you pick the pumpkin? I live in Michigan
@thepumpkinpatch86449 ай бұрын
It should keep growing but they slow down a lot. I usually pick them a couple weeks after they look like they stopped growing of just when they "look ready".

Why do you bury the vines? You and another video mentioned doing that, but I'd never heard why. Thanks. And will the pumpkins still grow once they turn orange? Or is it a waste keeping them on the vine at that point?
@thepumpkinpatch864411 ай бұрын
When the vines get buried it makes them more stable (for windy days) but mostly so the roots will develop on the vines. At each intersection along the vines there is a root that grow out of the bottom. There is also a little nod on the top that when buried, can develop into a root. The downside of burying vines is possible rot if they get too much water but in the meantime they do their job of sucking up more water and nutrients for the plant and pumpkin. I'm

Hey Rick! Love the giant pumpkins and the composting! You should look up the milpa system if you have the chance. You have a good basis with the pumpkin that could benefit from shade from corn and nitrogen fixation of soil from beans. It's a technique widely used in Central America that could help reduce a lot of external costs like synthetic fertilizer.

I've been elevating my pumpkins with egg crate cartons to remove any tension on it from the vine. Hoping it helps. My pumpkins are only about 6- 8 pounds now. I also bury the vines as much as possible, 1. To suffocate any bugs trying to bore thru 2. To allow more collateral vines into the soil to give nourishment to the pumpkins. I also use Diametous Earth powder on soil and BT spray in the leaves to prevent the borers. Lost one plant cuz of them. It's end of July 2022 in Southern California. Thankyou for the tips.
