i hope these guys' ears are fine, because this tech uses (usually) ultrasounds, with enormous amount of amplitude. (from 12kHz to 700kHz) (i was bored so i tried to calculate the sea's depth where these scuba divers were) because the sonar was coherent, i'll suppose this frequency was 12kHz (i just kind of randomly picked this value, i dont have perfect pitch), the sonar was subtly heard again after ~7 seconds. wave speed under sea water: 1500 m/s wave speed = {2 × depth} / delay {2 × depth} = (wave speed) × delay depth = { (wave speed) × delay } ÷ 2 = ( 1500 × 7 ) ÷ 2 = 5250 meters. these scuba divers chose a 5000-meter deep sea.

they're lucky they werent closer a sonar from submarines can be heard for hundreds of miles underwater and if your within even a mile it can kill you and fry your body.

Thats a surface ship. Don't want to be swimming around that. My ship (a DDG) in Norfolk turned on theirs when tbere was an active swimmer in the port trying to get close to us and not leaving. It killed him

Just to make sure yall understand. Take the sounds you just heard and multiply by 10. Thats what the divers actually heard. Underwater mics thend to somewhat silence loud noises and especially high frequency noises

Dude hearing it echo just reminds me of the scary thought that the ocean is mostly just a vast, dark void with tiny humans resorting to sound to map out its depths for other tiny humans that may be trying to hurt them.

As an ex-diver, experiencing transmitted sounds of all kinds is quite a weird experience. Quite unlike the way we hear them through the medium of air. It travels a lot faster in water and you get virtually no sense of direction from it.

Ppl don't get how actually insanely powerful and loud sonars are. If by any random chance a person is close to a sub or ship sonar when it fires, that can be very dangerous. Poor whales lol

Doubt it's a sub since their whole thing is to be undetectable but the fact you can hear the props of the ship (probably the one using sonar) is crazy how close it is. Civilian sonar probably won't kill you but could give your hearing damage dizziness ect Military sonar is much more powerful (to help find other military ships and subs hundred of miles away) and in close range could kill you

The main AUTEC support base and downrange tracking stations are on Andros Island in the Bahamas, just west of Nassau. It stands for Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center. Naval equipment testing center for top secret advanced naval equipment. It's a laboratory that performs integrated three-dimensional hydrospace/aerospace trajectory measurements covering the entire spectrum of undersea simulated warfare - calibration, classifications, detection, and destruction. Its mission is to assist in establishing and maintaining naval ability of the United States through testing, evaluation, and underwater research. Very likely where the sonar was coming from.

This must be so scary. While your vision makes you think the place you're in is pretty small (due to the water fog), your hearing clearly shows you're in a vast open space. and you cant even pinpoint the direction of the sound, it just comes from all sides
