I hear jet planes where I live. I am very far from any sort of settlement. My closest neighbour is 3 kilometres from me. My second closest is 10 kilometres from me. On extremely rural hikes where I am easily 50 kilometres from any settlement, I hear jet planes also.

I've heard that getting pinged by active sonar in a submarine is one of the most terrifying things you can ever experience if it happens at close range. Don't know if it's true, but I've heard it. Makes the whole sub vibrate or something.

Hearing sounds underwater is freaky. I was snorkeling in Hawaii and went a fair ways out with a few other people. I dove down to look at the fish and as I was about halfway down I heard a bunch of whale calls. It sounded like it was coming in from every direction. I knew what they were but it really freaked me out. It was an instant reminder that I was not alone, and that the blue void I saw when I looked out, stretched out further than I could comprehend.

That usually means the source was really close. Within a mile or so and shallow water.

I've swam in a large lake while speed boat races are taking place about 5 miles away. I couldn't hear a thing outside of the water but upon submerging my head it sounded like the engines were a football field away. It's terrifying how well sound travels underwater

In a sailboat, when below the water line you can hear the sound of ship's screws turning. And believe me it's better than any alarm clock as you learn real fast that many don't practice good watchkeeping and so you want to figure out in a hurry where they are and which direction they are going.

Diving in Okinawa and experienced an earthquake at 60 feet. Sounded like a bell the size of a mountain, with a definite *thump* against our chests. Really impressive.

Hey this has nothing to do with diving I know but what year were you talking about? I grew up in Okinawa but, although in a hot area for earthquakes, never actually felt one myself. My family moved there a month before the large 2011 earthquake/tsunami, but I was only 4 and don't remember anything or if the island was even affected. Just wondering if an earthquake can be felt better on land or underwater. Must be horrifying!

subs don't typically do active sonar pings, their aim is to see without being seen, sending out an active ping is like holding up a bright road flare in a pitch black room, this is probably a surface ship either testing its sonar, or doing a training exercise.

Yea it’s 100% a surface ship. It’s also not a sub pulse train which gives it away. Plus the DB at which it was transmitted at means it’s reasonably close, and that water is too shallow for a Sub to be in.

They have to use the active sonar sometimes. Otherwise there would be no point having it on board.

If it was actually a sub, you wouldn't have heard sonar. Subs do NOT casually "Yankee-search". Surface-ships, on the other hand, do it rather frequently. THAT was definitely a surface sonar, have heard that too many times. Being afraid of sonar isn't a bad thing, as at high power, it can F you up if you're in the water. Cruisers use it to prevent underwater approaches while anchored-out overseas.

Wow, that’s so loud and clear. I didn’t expect it to sound like that. Sound traveling underwater is crazy. It’s interesting how many sounds like sonar, a boat’s motor, etc… travel like crazy underwater, but if you’re in a pool with a friend, one on one side, one on the other, you can barely hear each other if you yell underwater, if at all.

As the person above said, when waves change medium sometimes a lot of the energy can be lost. If you're on one end of the pool and a friend is on the other though, you could tap something hard against the side of the pool, or knock two rocks together, and the person on the other side of the pool would hear it like its right beside their head.

Why wouldn’t you be able to hear it?

You can hear surface ship sonar from up to 100 miles away, and within like 50 miles it can affect you. It can also blow up your lungs and do alot of nasty stuff so ships rarely activate it near the coast in peacetime to avoid killing any divers and maritime animals.

Submariner here. That is not a submarine's active sonar. That is from the SQS-53, carried on many different classes of surface warships.

I'm originally from the Midwest never been to the Ocean until I went to Miami. Went to one of the beaches to swim. First thing I noticed was damn it's salty. But the thing that got me was this very high pitch sound. It was constant. I have no idea what it was. I was there for an hour or so and I could tell when boats go by but there was always this high pitch sound. Is that normal back ground noise of the ocean? Or something else. Never heard anything like that in Lake Michigan.

The loudest noise one can hear in the air is 194dB, which is ear shattering. The loudest noise that can be heard in the water is 270dB. This is hundreds of times stronger (logarithmic scale) and is quite simply deadly.

Love it!! Yeah, you got pinged. Actually, the DESTROYER that went active was probably a good bit away from you, since sound propagates through water for a long ways. The tones you heard and the changes in frequency and pulse are familiar to any sailor on today's USN destroyers since this can be heard throughout the ship's hull whenever we go active. If she was closer that sonar can mess you up. In port we can use it for antidiver purposes since anyone trying to get close to us underwater would FEEL it and come up with one button push.

Is this only on USN vessels or is it on commercial as well? We did a boarding action a single time in training since that’s not really our purview it would be the teams job, but we came on zodiacs. I am curious if the teams have an SOP for approaching warships from underwater to deal with sonar or do you just hope you aren’t compromised or hope they don’t start up?

@@efesezer8206 sonar is incredibly loud, and powerful. The sound waves propagating underwater could theoretically kill a diver if they were close enough to the boat, however it has never happened before.

Probably was a surface ship testing it's sonar. AUTEC, or the Atlantic Underwater Test and Evaluation Center is on Andros Island just across from where you were diving. In between the two islands is what's known as the Tongue of the Ocean, which drops down to 6,600 ft and is used for all sorts of testing.

AUTEC Bouy is awesome for fishing, until a submarine shows up and runs you away. Grew up fishing the bouy. done a few shark dives there too with Stuart Cove. definitely the scariest dive you can do, no bottom, and a lot of current. also the chain runs to the bottom, and dissapears into nothingness. i call it the "shark blender" cause if you look up, you are in the middle of a swirl of sharks cirlcing the bouy. its pretty epic. this is an opean ocean dive, so the wildlife is out in full force.

@@hambone950 the bouy does nothing really, its more of a placeholder. but the chain that goes 1000s of feet to the bottom grows marine life on it which attracts more marine life. for the most part, the subs test things out there. they never provide details, but its things like torpedos and sonar testing. they have a base a few miles away in Andros

I went to a swimming pool with a friend who had a Casio digital watch. Although it’s only half Olympic size (or maybe 2/3, I forget), I could CLEARLY hear him playing with the setting from it underwater when we are at complete opposite ends, even with all the kids and people splashing about. Truly mind-blowing, but makes sense when molecules that carry the sound are so close together in liquid.

Because at 194 decibels, sound waves become shockwaves. And military-grade SONAR tops out somewhere around 235 decibels at point-blank range and can be as loud as 140 decibels (louder than a full-volume live rock concert) up to 300 miles away from the transmitting unit.

Submarine sonar usage is limited. they very well could have but they wont

Ultra sonics are pretty wicked. Wide variety of applications. I've set up quite a few of them over the years in industrial applications. I learned the hard way early on to air on the side of caution. I was setting up a small device that was emitting what sounded like very slight ticking sounds, almost undetectable. Made the mistake of turning the emitter face on and immediately became very disoriented with unbelievable pain in my ears and head. I didn't have to move it away, my arm collapsed moving it away. It took a couple of minutes or more before my head cleared up and I knew what was happening to me. Crazy stuff man. That was very low power compared to what would be used in the water.

if you're too close to sub sonar (think within a few miles of a directional phased scan) it'll actually kill you, surface immediately

There is a US Naval base close to Nassau. Definitely could be active sonar testing.

@@Nordstatic Sound is measured in decibels, sonar can send a signal with so many Decibels that all the energy created from the wave (sound is a wave with energy) is enough to kill a human if close enough. I don't know how it is with marine animals, I'm sure a lot would die if a sub used sonar and they were within 200 meters distance, but perhaps the high water pressure allowed for a higher tolerance of pressure change (which is the wave)

@@TimDaOne I imagine it is mostly because we have a lot of air inside our bodies. Since the sound/pressure waves of the sonar ping compress air much more than water, it would damage our lungs and bowels more than aquatic animals that don't have those gas pockets present. It's the same as why underwater explosions are deadly from further distances.

@@SuperBIGGY84 sonar can be as loud as roughly 235db and because of how water carries sound waves compared to air, it can be heard hundreds of kilometres away from the source, sonar is capable of literally boiling water within a 1m radius. If these divers had of been close enough to the source they could've been either seriously injured or even killed. Sonar is no joke

I’ve been a diver for 34 years. I’ve heard cargo ship props that were a solid mile from me and I’ve heard pleasure boat props right above me but never heard anything like that before.

In the second ping around 1:45 you can hear the fainter echo reflection and reverberation from the seabed. The source is not moving, or it is moving very slowly, as there is no doppler shift in frequency of the reflected signal.

These people are so lucky to be alive. For many miles after a sonar signal is sent out, being within transmission radius of the ping and getting hit with it can melt your brain by causing hemorrhaging causing internal bleeding of a vessel to pop. This is why I stick to the deep end of a pool, thank you very much

I have a friend battling cancer who was part of the DoD that did acoustics research for the Navy based in the Bahamas. He said some of the stuff the US has is strong enough sonar that actually paint the bottom and something trying to hide on the bottom. Recreational fisherman are now getting a taste of that in Real Time Sonar. Some of the testing was so strong and severe it would kill mammals and fish in the cone. My friend is doing well today.

Do you understand how this actually kills? I understand it is... sound. Of course. So it's... vibrations? Or something? Through the water? Like, I understand that fluid as a super-dense medium (compared to gas at least) will transfer shockwaves and sound far more efficiently and violently than in atmosphere, but I'm not understanding how sound becomes lethal in water. The human body is not insular enough against vibrating water? Or perhaps it vibrates the fluids inside the body too violently and ruptures stuff?

@@TemenosL the speed of sound in water is 1500 metres per second So imagine an immensely powerful pressure wave (since sound is varying pressure, and sub sonar is 200+dB sound) hitting your entire body at 1500m/s. 200db is something like 6.5 million Pascal's of peak pressure according to a quick Google, or 945PSI. So the equivalent of getting crushed by several tonnes instantaneously. 200dB in the air can kill you, nevermind in the sea. Terrifying 😅

After playing countless hours of Cold Waters (submarine combat game), I instinctively had a moment of panic. I’d say it wasn’t a submarine but a surface ship of some sort. Submarines wouldn’t give their position away by using active sonar. They have towed arrays to detect and track other vessels.

The sounds that powerful sonars emit are often proprietary and guarded, but there are quality recordings out there, and this video is one of the best. That absolutely is the sound of sonar- not dissimilar to the fictional frequency detection and listening scenes in the movie Sunshine from 2007.

0:45, 1:45- minute marks when sonar "PING" is the loudest, most audible, followed by a noticeable, faint echo following first high pitch sound. very loud for underwater!

The systems have to be locked out / tagged out any time our people are in the water. At night, the lookouts on ships at anchor will sometimes get on a bullhorn and state very clearly into the darkness that the sonar can move the water a full inch and kill divers, and to stay away.

If there is a crew in a water around the ship there is a voice saying "do not turn the sonar on, crew is operating under water" and US navy used this in iraq war agains suicide divers

Saw a video about this not too long ago. It can screw you up even if you are surfaced. Where is one story of someone who was in the shallows at the beach who had to go to the hospital for trauma due to sonar from a ship several miles away.

Fun fact: sonar can hurt you even 100 miles away. There's a solid chance the vessel that sent that ping is quite far away. Edit: Wrongly stated 160 miles, I got kilometers and miles confused (it's 100 miles, 160 kilometers). Has been corrected.

@@georgestam1710 sonar runs at an extremely high decibel rating. Fun fact, theres sonar that can boil water. Sonar can quite literally kill you. And the way decibels works, 100 to 120 decibels is multiplying it several times in actual volume. Sonar can run in the 200 + decibels range.

This sound would also have scared the absolute hell out of me. From what I have read, the active systems on military vessels can easily turn your body into literal pulp at close range. According to one source I have read (which I was not able to verify as I am not a Navy person - so take that with a huge pinch of salt, since this is the internet), a full power blast from a sonar near the surface can even boil the water immediately around the sonar array. I do not know if there is any way to differentiate between active sonar from a submarine compared to active sonar from a surface ship. The distance is also a question mark I think - could be a very low power ping from relatively close by, like a couple of miles - or one very high powered one from hundreds of miles away. Either way, I am pretty sure they were not specifically pinging you. But is am sure there are people way more competent and knowledgeable than myself who can weigh in on this. Little fun fact / useless trivia: the "man down" warning on a SCBA device used by firefighters produces a similar earsplitting sound, including the alternating frequencies, b/c sound waves are also affected by thick smoke. Those warning devices usually go off after about 30 seconds (or when the alarm button is pressed). This is btw why on TV you sometimes see firefighters shake a little black box (usually attached to an air hose somewhere around the shoulder) or jump up and down occasionally, if they are in full gear. Some devices also emit a low volume pre-warning for a few seconds before they start screaming bloody murder in your ear..

the thing is it theoretically has he power to boil water by cavitation. But this is unwanted, as the fluctuation in preasure would/could slowly errode the metalic plates on the sonar. Therefore such powers, although possible, are avoided. But yea, it could for sure.

As the soundwave exits the apparatus into the water around, areas of high pressure and low pressure are created (basic concept of a way with its peaks and valleys). In the areas of low pressure, due to the enormous amplitude of the wave, quite a high vaccum is created in which the water boils even when cold (the lower the pressure, the lower the boilng point of all liquids)

only did one war game with a Carrier task forces. The Escorts kept me up almost my entire sleep period with their pings. No idea how close we were or if it was during or after our hunting, they were keeping it up for a solid 6 hours.

Many a night I heard that sound laying in my rack when I was in the navy. My cabin was below decks with a (relatively) thin sheet of steel between me and the deep blue. I swear the operators would do it sometimes just to wake you up.

I got goosebumps hearing this… 0.o this is the last noise you want to hear while you’re underwater, because if you’re close enough to that sonar, it can cause serious internal damage if it doesn’t kill you.. I can only imagine what was going through these guys Mind once they realized what they were hearing.

Another fine product from unisys. They made most of the sonar/weapons control/radar systems for the Navy. I was in the anechoic chamber a few times where they tested certain systems. It was deafening to hear your own blood surging thru your body. Unisys developed the doppler radar which the original project waa canceled and then it was sold to NOAA. They also invented the laser ring gyro used for inertia navigation systems on subs, so sensitive thT it could detect the earths wobble later sold to Singer to be used onboard missiles. So many other technologies they developed that are still classified to this day. It was funny that a friend of mine who worked at Unisys had to go onboard a sub for some upgrades and all the gauges were covered up. He laughed and said to the MPs who were with him aboard the boat, "you do realize that we BUILT these systems. I have top secret clearance, so i already know how fast and how deep this thing goes."

"If i told you, id have to kill you" haha So many brilliant people worked in that company. Lots of them with doctorate degrees in physics, engineering etc. One of them is the USAs leading authority on radar systems. He gets called in by the gvt all the time to adivse

@@Robisquick Reef fish in these dense colonies quite literally communicate with each other through grunts and various other sounds. If you've ever been underwater with the right gear, the sounds of the reef come alive. These animals use sound to communicate, just because they have different organs (such as lateral lines) to perceive sound instead of mammalian ears does not mean they don't hear well. They hear very well.

I've been pinged before, a few times. It's scary knowing someone with a bigger gun knows exactly where you are, even if they're actually miles away and not looking for you specifically. The ocean is a big place, but if you hear that sonar, well, they know where you are and you better not get closer. The first time I emergency ascended with my buddy thinking my eardrums would rupture if I was underwater if it went off again because I knew what it was and how dangerous sonar is for divers, then got laughed at when the source was found to be miles away.

That sounded more like SOSUS arrays. I was on the USS Michigan SSBN 727 and we never used active sonar even when not alert (covering target packages) We did go through an alley of SOSUS arrays because we thought a Russian sub was tailing us and they actively pinged. It was kind of eerie.

SOSUS stands for Sound Surveillance System. The US has SOSUS arrays placed all over the ocean to detect enemy submarines. Sonabouys can also be launched from planes and/or helicopters. There is a company here in Central Florida who builds sonabouys for the USN.

I imagine it's a similar feeling to hearing a female mountain lion in heat for the first time and not having any idea what it is. Very terrifying experience

No wonder the whales get out of the water. Holy crap.

Active sonar pings can reach up to more than 120km under water. Legit crazy and terrifying as the stronger the sonar ping can lead to trauma and huge hearing loss and can cause damage to your lungs. Also the fact sonars can boil water if they put more power to them

The repeating tones sounded more like someone was trying to determine depth than other craft. Naval vessels are in a passive search mode most of the time. They have multiple methods to determine targeting without going active.

0:45 is when sonar pops up

That active sonar could be from a ship that is 100-300 miles away. Every 10db is 10 times louder than the previous 10db in order of magnitude. Destroyers can create a sonar event of 235db which is literally a trillion times louder than speaking volume. It can melt the tissue in your brain. Just bonkers technology for ship security.

Melt isn't the right word, since the effect is acoustic not thermal. More accurately it pulverizes your internal organs. Like the shockwave from an explosion, the pressure wave from sonar is loud enough it basically just crushes your internal organs as the wave passes through them.

A lot of people don't understand pings outside of the vessel. Inside all you really hear is "boop, bing, bong" from the terminals. Outside? Well it *HAS* to be loud and high pitched for a reason.

I'm really surprised by what the sonar sounded like. I expected low pitched "ping... ping..", not this squeal. Also the sound right at the end was terrifying

I think that low pitched ping like you hear in submarine movies is from a WW2 era sonar.

Sonar/Radar actually do something called chirping (clue is in the name,) where it runs through a spectrum of frequencies (high to low/low to high,) to give a greater resolution of the intended target in the boresight. The specific frequencies they propagate give the receive signal a "signature" so that they can pick it out of all the other mess/noise. Really interesting tech!

Man that sounded annoying even through my phone speakers... Can't imagine what sea life must feel, especially super sensitive ones like whales, etc.

The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center in Andros Town, Bahamas. This place is quite close to Nassau, and since sound travels much further through water, that's probably what you were hearing.

Andros Island! The most amazing thing was the entire place smelked like cocoa butter and hermit crabs were everywhere. Im glad someone mentioned it since a lot of the comments seemed like they were talking put their asses 🤣😂 we ran our sub through underwater minefield laying exercises there years and years ago, but we didn't do any active sonar.

Navy sonar. I wasn't in the Navy, but subs don't usually use active sonar so was probably a surface ship; any sailors reading this correct me if I'm wrong. It must have been a significant distance away too. I've heard stories of divers being physically injured from a sonar burst that originated more than 100 kilometers away.

I was expecting the traditional 'ping, bock' sound. I learnt something today, thank you.

Most cases submarines use “ passive sonar “ or just listening. Only when they are actively hunting do they use the “ active sonar “ pinging to hunt enemies. Hunt for Red October is somewhat a decent example of this as when you “ping” you are giving away your position. The Dallas was using passive to listen for the Red October. Now as others have stated surface ships use active sonar frequently and aircraft can drop sonar buoys. I’m thinking this is most likely surface ship.

Nope...Passive sonar is how we actively hunt or track other vessels. My sub never once used active sonar...The only time I've ever heard a sub ping was in videos of the SAR attempt to save the USS Thresher incident.

Fun fact, the newest generations of submarines are so quiet that they are actually almost quieter than the ocean's background noise. This means that soon the most advanced submarines will be so quiet that passive sonar will not be able to detect them even at near-zero range. Active sonar may have to be used more frequently because of this.

A powerful sonar blast can be deadly to humans. Alot of divers aren't even aware.

If I heard that noise while scuba diving, not knowing what it was, my wet suit would have been twice as wet.

Crazy how it echoes even after the initial wave

Drives whales and dolphins crazy to the degree that they beach themselves to escape the sound.

Sonar can boil the water around the sonar dome. Pretty nuts.

Hell, I was half asleep watching this and it scared me.

Fun fact, if a ships sonar pings too close your lungs and brain will more or less explode. Even from miles out you may be disoriented and nauseous.

1:35 That is the type of shark that I saw as a kid next to Catalina Island it was swimming above the ground like that. Me and my church friend Bill swam as fast as we could back to the boat just to have the pastor Bruce laugh at us and tell us we had nothing to worry about that they were nurse sharks and would like how we taste. xD

You: The f- was that?! Fish: [puffs cigarette] First time?

That’s actually really dangerous. The sound energy from that is so intense that it’s actually enough to make your insides explode and turn to mush.

Haven’t heard that sound in years

Sound travels well in thick fog too, ships blowing horns, ringing bells, the rumbling of the engines, all sound very close. I was in a fog so thick, I couldn't make anything out after five feet. Terrified sailor on a 26 foot sailboat caught in thick fog.

That's why you blow the fog horn every 2 minutes staggering a few seconds to avoid accidentally signaling at the same time as other ships.

It sounds so close that you think you're about to be run over at any moment....everyone is blowing horns, ringing bells....but you can't see your hand in front of your face. You can hear the bow wake of a freighter, the pistons thumping away, Your thinking, OK this is it....goodbye world.

Dam that sounded amazing. Like it wasn’t even travelling through water.

Now I understand why sonar is a big problem to the whale population

I'm starting to understand that sound and vibration can be much more deadly than hot projectiles.

I can’t imagine how terrifying this would be (considering the fact that a sonar ping melts your brain) to go under water and hear that in the distance

The weird thing about this is that submarines never use active sonar. To do so negates their one advantage, stealth. ( I served 7 years in the U.S. Navy submarine service.)

They use it all the time, tbh. How do you think depth below the keel soundings are done? What they do not do is active ping omni-directionally to locate targets--unless they are desperate AF--or at all (including sounding sonar) when they are actively trying to stay hidden.

@@Revolutionarythought The only time our fathometer was manned was during surface transits as part of the Navigation Watch. When you are in water that is thousands of feet deep, you don't care what the depth under keel is. If it is low enough to matter, you are on the surface, or are doing special operations, which would preclude using the fathometer. My source is my experience in the control room of a submarine for years. Have the Expeditionary Medal to prove it.

So awesome you can hear the echo of it bouncing of something a few seconds later. It’s amazing how certain frequencies react in liquids.

I remember being out snorkling once, I was in a vertical position with my old scubapro jetfins, sticking out at a 90 degree angle in the water column (the good super responsive natural rubber kind, now vintage), they must have been at a depth of about 1.7 metres. All of a sudden they start vibrating like crazy, to where I can feel it all the way up my lower leg. There was no nearby sound in particular, my head being out of the water, but as I look out across the strait I can see a huge private motor boat crossing perhaps a mile, maybe half a mile out. Only thing I could think of was that somehow my fins must have been at about a depth where the vibration of the propeller somehow made the fins quiver in phase. It’s a place where bigger ferries cross all the time as well, so It could have been one of those, that I didn’t notice or which was out of sight. Super weird experience anyway. The only other thing I can think of is some kind of muscle spasm that transferred into the fin, but I’m a former competitive swimmer and I’ve been diving and spearfishing for more than 20 years and never had a muscle response even vaguely resembling that odd vibrating feel, plus it was both fins (and legs). It’s a place where it’s not entirely inconceivable that subs could very occasionally pass, in the deep part of the strait but what that would do I don’t know, the water would have been like just 3-5 m of deep where I was.
