Royal Osteoporosis Society
We are the only UK-wide organisation dedicated to finding a cure for osteoporosis and improving the lives of everyone affected by it.
We help the nation look after its bones and appreciate the importance of bone health for everybody. For those who do develop osteoporosis, we're here to help them live well.
For over 30 years, we've been trusted to put the needs of people with osteoporosis first and foremost. We focus our efforts on what's best for the person and what makes the biggest difference to their lives. We always see the individual, not the condition.

If you have severe osteoporosis and squeeze your shoulders back to the max you will break a bone, either scapula or vertebra.
I’m three months on from my hip fracture and so thankful that I found your wonderful presentation. You answered so many of the questions that I still had, and after a very tearful day, thinking that ‘normal’ life was over for me, you’ve given me hope that I will get better.
How long can you keep taking Alendronate Acid?
Thankfully I have no problems taking this medication & I have set a reminder on my mobile so that I don't forget to take it. Thanks for the video
How many times a week should you do these exercises? And do you do all the exercises each time?
I’ve just had this by intravenous infusion - only required once a year 😊
Why do people die from hip fracture? Is it people giving up on life?
I really need vitamin D as I've been taking over 4000mg of different epilepsy medication for so long
Horrid medication never been so unwell. Shame we have to look elsewhere for help.
Always being told this! Well sorry but that’s not true, complained of bone pain for a long time before I was diagnosed.
Menopause is never over.

Glad it was helpful!

Thank you!
I've had a cough for 6 weeks. Xray clear. But last night I coughed so hard I felt something pop round the back of my ribs. The pain was so bad. I went into a cold sweat and almost passed out. Doctors at A&E had no idea what I'd done, but now I'm scared to cough. Being an asthmatic I need cough to clear phlegm so I'm going to see if these techniques help.
Rheumatoid arthritis would HRT help prevent? My mother had Rheumatoid - thanks
This is good to know. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my lumbar spine. And I am a yoga teacher! I teach chair yoga to seniors a couple times a week. I will use this video to modify a bit. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing!!
Took Alendronic Acid as was told 14 years ago if I didn’t I would break a hip and die 😳. Horrible stuff caused me aches and pains but was told to persevere. Broke both wrists and a bone in my foot whilst taking drugs having never broken a bone before except in the trauma accident which caused them to put me on the drugs in the first place. Dexa scans showed an improvement in my bone density but as I later found out not bone strength which is the most important thing. Wish I had never taken drugs. Have been off them for around 7 years but my dentist is still very careful should there ever be a need for extraction. She has seen evidence of osteonecrosis not good and not as rare as the drug company would have you believe. I am not eligible for any further dexa scans as I have refused any further treatment. I have had a REMS scan which shows since I have been off the drugs and following my own regime my bone density and more importantly strength has improved.
I been suffering with compression fracture for six years
Thank you for easing my mind. I have had it several years .
Thank you so much! I was just diagnosed with severe osteoporosis and feel devastated because I teach Pilates … these modifications will be helpful for my own body. Still trying to figure out if I can teach to a population that doesn’t have my issues. Yes, your voice is so calming.:) I feel lucky to have found your video❤️
I've had a spinal fracture as a result of severe osteoporosis . I'm in pain a year on . Thanks for the video.
I also, tired of pain.
Thank you both... VERY informative ...a complex subject
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's a relief to hear that 'if you've been doing this pose regularly with no problems, you can continue to use it'. I don't want to lose the ability to touch my toes
I have have had a fracture of my T12 vertebrae but my GP has not offered me any medication to help strengthen my bones - any idea why I have not been offered medication ?

I have decided to have an annual injection as the tablets gave me awful digestive issues. I found this podcast so informative and interesting and you have put my mind at rest on the benefits of having it.

Hell yah hurt like all get out
Great video. Thanks for all the important information.
Glad it was helpful!
I tried this but as soon as I bent my knees they started to cramp. What did I do wrong?
thats totally silly !! you cant get on a hard mat like this on the floor with spinal fractures !!!
I agree. I couldn’t lay flat on the XRay table to have an X-ray taken of the spine… & getting off that table was excruciating.
@@butterpecan9749 an MRI is hard too as the amount of time ie up to an hour you have to lie still to actually have it done , many times x rays dont pick up spinal fractures they didnt mine , x rays and Dexa scan like you have found are hard for people with spinal fractures and people that tell you to do pilates on the floor on a mat havent had spinal fractures , as my back goes into spasms on the floor on a mat ! what these medical people need to focus on isnt physio is dealing with the spinal fracture correctly as it happens , which is a very tight brace so the bone sets correctly not in a wedge then physio to build up the muscle time tone , no bracing leads to kyphosis like I have . This is so badly understood or dealt with !!!
@@butterpecan9749any updates I have 6 and c7 fracures and some d5 caused by and accident my symtoms are bladder and bowel i can control them but when its time is time i have double vision and ear noises just in the right pretty much. All the right is fuked up resulted in trouble walking and swallowing openning my full mouth my right jaw and speatch are slured prolem with contration i hope u can answer looking forward now its been 2 months nd half of the injery hopefulluly those sumptoms goes away im just texting you with the left hand hopefully i didnt make any .istakes also problems with erection my doc says just do u collar of the neck and back for 6 months and ull be fine but im not sure...
Try something
That's what I would like to know.
Useful info, but can osteoporosis be reversed through medication and exercise?
Is it true that bones health is directly dependent on the ammount of calcium intake and with also the necessary Sun light it make the bones much more stronger if that so How come people who have broken arm their bones didn't become the same aftera good ammount of calcium and sunlight if it is not that maybe you can say that a Broken limb is always a broken limb is that so cause animals which are less of a conscious being they do not have such difficulties often as much as humans do is it age factor or we leaving something there?
Thank you! It's was very informative and I appreciate it.
You're very welcome!
Did I miss any info. on dosage? What's the lowest dose of estrogen that could treat osteoporosis? The Brits and Canadians seem to be much more informed about osteoporosis than nearly all the American providers I've seen. Thank you.
I understand all of these men's plight. At 31 I was dx with very low Vit D, then at 32 with Celiac, and finally around 32-33 with low testosterone, that eventually went to very low (67). I had a family doctor and multiple specialists gaslight me, despite all these sx. My only breaks were at 5 yo and 25 yo, hairline fractures of both elbow and wrist, respectively. I finally found an integrative medicine osteopathic doctor offer a DEXA scan, and it caught me off guard because I was only there for a consult for vitamins. I felt seen. I didn't have to beg. And I was right, at 34, I had osteopenia in my lumbars and forearm, and osteoporosis in my hip. Now, after years of oral and topical treatments with continued decline in BMD, I finally had my first bisphosphonate drug infusion of Reclast Friday. It's been the most painful bone and joint pain I've ever experienced. I surely hope and believe it will help! 😢
i have just been diagnosed with the severist osteoporosis and my pain has been 20 out of 10 i thought i was dying and everyday i am in constant severe no sleep pain and i do not have fractures so why is that. i do have a bulge on my lower spine too
This is great, but confusing because of facing each other to learn. Any suggestions for me.
People who take proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole may be more likely to fracture their wrists, hips, or spine than people who do not take one of these medications, as per MedlinePlus.gov. I was disappointed that Dr Black recommended proton pump inhibitors.
Dear dr I was told that my mothers fracture on the spinal cord and the bone was dead.i was told that it might be malignent
Maybe a urine calcium test would be helpful. (Are you absorbing calcium or creating kidney stones?)
My gp has been hopelessly- I have have had to seek specialist treatment and find it on my own, I have have had to read watch documentaries and I go back to my gp for help, they were so useless I made an official complaint, I need my pain managed and hormone therapy. I have a fractured spine fractured shoulder blades both sides and a fractured foot
I’m 50, I haven’t smoked or drunk alcohol for 18 years, there’s no family history and my diet is clean and boosted by vitamin D &B magnesium and high calcium foods, i have had every spinal procedure, steroid injections, rhysolisis ,faucet joint nerve laser burning, chiropractic treatment, acupuncture, meditation and therapy, five surgeries and I can’t do any more, I have paid my taxes my life, I’m an academic who works in university and an artist, the gp is less qualified arrogant won’t listen rude and cruel- i don’t don’t where else to turn. My life has slowly been destroyed and I am losing everything that has taken a lifetime to build Only suicide is left, I have tired everything the medical profession has to offer over the last six years, there comes a point when you have to accept the truth, I have sorted the wills out, but I’m a coward and two failed suicide attempts are embarrassing…
Thanks for these videos, I am just starting my Osteoporosis journey, and all the information that the society provides has been excellent. So good in fact that I joined the society in November last year.
I LOVE HOW I FEEL DOING THESE EXERCISES! They feel SO right, especially as a perfect counterpoint to some prolonged sitting. I have osteopenia/mild osteoporosis and wear a 10 pound weight vest while doing these. Thank you Bex!
Doesn't healing time slow down with Osteoporosis?
I have osteoporosis and not fully healed after 8/9 month mine were severe wedge features at T6/7 and now have kyphosis and lost sone height I’m still in pain and think Iv fractured another higher up? The pain is suggesting I might so will see what the X-ray says when my appointment comes through I really hope I have got another fracture
