Royal Osteoporosis Society

Royal Osteoporosis Society

We are the only UK-wide organisation dedicated to finding a cure for osteoporosis and improving the lives of everyone affected by it.

We help the nation look after its bones and appreciate the importance of bone health for everybody. For those who do develop osteoporosis, we're here to help them live well.

For over 30 years, we've been trusted to put the needs of people with osteoporosis first and foremost. We focus our efforts on what's best for the person and what makes the biggest difference to their lives. We always see the individual, not the condition.

If you have severe osteoporosis and squeeze your shoulders back to the max you will break a bone, either scapula or vertebra.

I’m three months on from my hip fracture and so thankful that I found your wonderful presentation. You answered so many of the questions that I still had, and after a very tearful day, thinking that ‘normal’ life was over for me, you’ve given me hope that I will get better.

I've had a cough for 6 weeks. Xray clear. But last night I coughed so hard I felt something pop round the back of my ribs. The pain was so bad. I went into a cold sweat and almost passed out. Doctors at A&E had no idea what I'd done, but now I'm scared to cough. Being an asthmatic I need cough to clear phlegm so I'm going to see if these techniques help.

Took Alendronic Acid as was told 14 years ago if I didn’t I would break a hip and die 😳. Horrible stuff caused me aches and pains but was told to persevere. Broke both wrists and a bone in my foot whilst taking drugs having never broken a bone before except in the trauma accident which caused them to put me on the drugs in the first place. Dexa scans showed an improvement in my bone density but as I later found out not bone strength which is the most important thing. Wish I had never taken drugs. Have been off them for around 7 years but my dentist is still very careful should there ever be a need for extraction. She has seen evidence of osteonecrosis not good and not as rare as the drug company would have you believe. I am not eligible for any further dexa scans as I have refused any further treatment. I have had a REMS scan which shows since I have been off the drugs and following my own regime my bone density and more importantly strength has improved.

@@butterpecan9749 an MRI is hard too as the amount of time ie up to an hour you have to lie still to actually have it done , many times x rays dont pick up spinal fractures they didnt mine , x rays and Dexa scan like you have found are hard for people with spinal fractures and people that tell you to do pilates on the floor on a mat havent had spinal fractures , as my back goes into spasms on the floor on a mat ! what these medical people need to focus on isnt physio is dealing with the spinal fracture correctly as it happens , which is a very tight brace so the bone sets correctly not in a wedge then physio to build up the muscle time tone , no bracing leads to kyphosis like I have . This is so badly understood or dealt with !!!

Is it true that bones health is directly dependent on the ammount of calcium intake and with also the necessary Sun light it make the bones much more stronger if that so How come people who have broken arm their bones didn't become the same aftera good ammount of calcium and sunlight if it is not that maybe you can say that a Broken limb is always a broken limb is that so cause animals which are less of a conscious being they do not have such difficulties often as much as humans do is it age factor or we leaving something there?

I understand all of these men's plight. At 31 I was dx with very low Vit D, then at 32 with Celiac, and finally around 32-33 with low testosterone, that eventually went to very low (67). I had a family doctor and multiple specialists gaslight me, despite all these sx. My only breaks were at 5 yo and 25 yo, hairline fractures of both elbow and wrist, respectively. I finally found an integrative medicine osteopathic doctor offer a DEXA scan, and it caught me off guard because I was only there for a consult for vitamins. I felt seen. I didn't have to beg. And I was right, at 34, I had osteopenia in my lumbars and forearm, and osteoporosis in my hip. Now, after years of oral and topical treatments with continued decline in BMD, I finally had my first bisphosphonate drug infusion of Reclast Friday. It's been the most painful bone and joint pain I've ever experienced. I surely hope and believe it will help! 😢

People who take proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole may be more likely to fracture their wrists, hips, or spine than people who do not take one of these medications, as per MedlinePlus.gov. I was disappointed that Dr Black recommended proton pump inhibitors.

I’m 50, I haven’t smoked or drunk alcohol for 18 years, there’s no family history and my diet is clean and boosted by vitamin D &B magnesium and high calcium foods, i have had every spinal procedure, steroid injections, rhysolisis ,faucet joint nerve laser burning, chiropractic treatment, acupuncture, meditation and therapy, five surgeries and I can’t do any more, I have paid my taxes my life, I’m an academic who works in university and an artist, the gp is less qualified arrogant won’t listen rude and cruel- i don’t don’t where else to turn. My life has slowly been destroyed and I am losing everything that has taken a lifetime to build Only suicide is left, I have tired everything the medical profession has to offer over the last six years, there comes a point when you have to accept the truth, I have sorted the wills out, but I’m a coward and two failed suicide attempts are embarrassing…
