My personal setup when I hit this river was a 3wt trout spey for swinging/stripping, and then a 10' 3wt with a dry fly line with my mono rig on top so I could quickly switch between dry and nymphing by swapping it for a tapered leader.

What is the reason for manu black flies on Skagit? Not many mosquitoes
@PacificAnglerTV14 күн бұрын
I asked one of the top bios who works in the area and he has no idea on the black flies but we both were blown away bye how many there are right now. He thinks the mosquitos are late cus of the cold spring and lack of water in the lake. All the standing water bye the lake is dry. I will take flies over mosquitos but he does expect the mosquitos to show up soon. So enjoy it while we can.

@@PacificAnglerTV Good thing about mosquitoes is they stop at the edge of the water. As soon as you step in up to ankles to wet wade, you are good to go. The pack is huge as it can carry about 3 3700 series tackle trays which cover an extra layer, heavier gloves, and my emergency kit along with all the trout or creek tackle I could ask for, I'm also very extra and run 2 or 3 rods always.

Interesting review and testing. I agree with your thought regarding Tri-Color lines. Recently, I purchased a two-color version of Perception and added two six-inch black zones using a Sharpe. The first zone was at the midpoint of the head and the second was at the end of the head. Doing this approximates the benefit of the tri-color version and makes it easier to find the optimal load point when casting. Here's my opinion regarding SA vs Rio lines. For freshwater, I prefer SA, in particular their Smooth Creek line. However, for saltwater, I like Rio with SlickCast. Comparing Bonefish Quickshooter to Orvis Saltwater Allrounder (with AST Plus) makes it easy to see and feel just how much better the Rio line is when casting. For those who aren't aware, Orvis owns SA.

Lol. I just read this post. I don’t usually bother with funny negative post like this but I think this is more a miss understanding of what I was meaning 😂 I get beginners coming into the shop all the time talking about salmon rising and “feeding” on the surface of a given river. You are right this does not happen. But we can get them to “Feed” eat a fly on the surface. I have caught lots of coho in rivers on wogs and poppers. It’s hard but very possible. I have also had jacks on remote systems eat dead drifted mayfly patterns. I think that any time a salmon or steelhead puts a fly or lure in its mouth they are triggered by a complicated mix of feeding / aggression instincts. In this video I was referring to the act of putting something in their mouth, weather it’s a “feeding” instinct or an aggression response. I have read a number of detailed studies on the topic and current science doesn’t come to a conclusive answer of why salmon “eat” in rivers but all of the studies look at feeding instinct and aggression instincts triggering them to eat.
