Thanks. Good info. But you repeat yourself an awful lot. It distracts from the flow of what you're doing and makes the video unnecessarily long.

What kind of foam are you testing- polystyrene, polyethylene etc? Chemistry is critical to what can be used, it's essential to specify.

While the spray poly seems to hold up fine on the smooth, finished exterior of the foam, if there are any scratches or gouges that expose loose interior foam, this eats it right up, and will leave your foam wrecked. Also, as others have mentioned, the aerosol is the main issue, not the poly itself. If you were to brush on poly, it would work great.

Most of the time, it's the solvents (paint thinners) that are added to spray paints that is damaging foam. When you spray it from a longer distance, there's more time for those thinning solvents to evaporate in the air before it lands on your project. A warm water bath also helps the solvents evaporate into the air faster. Obviously if you're working on something that is detailed, you might need a sealer, but if you're trying to disguise exposed exterior xps from a duct... this is a different story. Spray paints require solvents to make them thin enough to be sprayable. Every single spray paint is different, even if two colors by the same maker. Some colors require more pigment powers which makes the paint thicker, and that means it will need more solvents to be sprayable. Obviously use a paint that's compatible with the foam you're using, just keep in mind that if it's in a can, it's going to have some paint thinners in it.

being a new modeler we find means and methods hard to find, so we just stumble upon them, like this.. AND you can use minwax wipe on poly and rust-oleum oil base enamel directly on FOAM, we discovered this while painting an Arrow foam Corsair. I happened to get some oil base paints on the foam packing and realized that not only does it not dissolve the foam, it bonds very well to the foam. The cheap paint that came on the plane peeled off with some Blue tape after I had painted with some latex water base paints; We even poured some paint thinner on the foam and it pooled on the foam but Did Not Dissolve the foam. Yes, you can coat your Foam plane with oil base poly, paint etc, resulting in a Hard structural skin.

@@thetacticalnerdist7865 yes, we all need all the help we can find. I was amazed that the foam worked so well with oil based polys and paints, even paint thinner. We found that using water based primers was not necessary and did not fully bond to foam. I had gotten the impression from people concerned about spray paint cans that all oil based solvents would dissolve foam, but now we know it's the acetone. And remember to store your spray paint cans on the side, not upright, so that the pigment will stratify on the side of the can and not the bottom.
