  The reason there is a sunset and then gets lighter is because youre seeing both the sunset and sunrise. There's only civil twilight, no nautical twilight, astronomical twilight or night proper, so it's one continuous orange sunset/sunrise. Further north, the sun doesn't go under the horizon at all.
