Check out how I dive some of the best sites in San Diego!
I am not an expert or a dive professional. I don't know all the hazards that exist for a particular dive. Do not use the information here as your sole source of information on this subject. Some of my information may be incorrect. Talk to lifeguards, use other resources and most importantly, dive within your level of training and your skills/abilities. Just because a dive looks easy doesn't mean it is, or that its even safe. People have lost their lives diving here so make sure you're diving within your limits.

Great video and narration, my go to place (Divers Cove) to dive (1973-1990) in So Cal. We would wear our tanks walk up the stairs and go to the old dive shop (Laguna Dive) on PCH get our tanks filled and get a second dive in.
So... what's the rule with snagging a few of these gorgonians for a saltwater tank at home?.. 😁😏
Random question…how was the cell service? Trying to go on a Friday but need access to my phone in between dives 😁
no service at all
Is the anchor still there? I dove this recently with a buddy, we found the bouy, but it only had one line on it, and the wall looks less steep than it does in the video, I think im in the right spot and it just changed since this video was made, also havent gone past 100ft yet to check out the rest of it
La Jolla is so beautiful.
I’m looking for a diver to help me recover a fishing pole I dropped off of a dock . Know anyone how can help me ?
I love this dive site. I would also note that it's super important to keep your regs in while getting in and out of the water
We used to do this dive back in the early 90's. It was referred to as the "Banzai Wall" back then. Really cool dive
Back in the 70s I was in High School and me and my school buddies surfed most of the various beaches in SoCal . We were avid readers of Surfer Magazine , and they frequently featured photos of people surfing La Jolla Shores , Blacks Beach and other nearby surf spots . We all decided that we should go there and check it out . I then came upon an article that said the La Jolla area was a place often frequented by Great White Sharks , which had routinely been caught off of the Scripps pier . It also said there were submarine canyons adjacent to shallow table areas running perpendicular to the beach that GWS use for coming close to shore and darting into the flats to capture prey . That's when I decided not to surf there , much less than night scuba dive there !! 😳😯🤯
They are there and I often find them while flying my drone in the area but they're generally small so they eat small things like stingrays and they're often times swimming just passed the break among the surfers. By the time they get big enough to eat mammals they head out to deeper water.
Great vid. How is your camera mounted ? Or hand held?
For this video I was using a gopro mounted to a tray, so I'm holding the tray with 2 hands.
Very cool!
Promo SM
that was an awesome dive video. Mad me smile the whole time.
Sick, kayaking in there is fun as hell , as long as you beat the tide push ha
Awesome clip wow, thing looks ancient
Get rid of those sound effects in the background irritating..ahh
Ahh sorry about that. I assume you're commenting on the background music?
Thank you for the tour and description of the reef. I got to do this dive yesterday and really enjoyed it. Very pretty. Loved the sponges, the wall, the different cuts in the reef and the kelp. My new fave area to explore more often when conditions are good❤
Love this video!
This is cool, where did you find these?
It came from a DVD called Project Yukon produced by the San Diego Oceans Foundation. There's a few more videos and a bunch of pdf documents that came with it that I have looked at yet.
Very nice work here
All good news. What fish is that @4:24?
Almost looks like a Giant Kelp Fish but it's the wrong shape. I'm not sure.
@@SDScubaThanks for the reply. Pretty sure I've seen that in one of my books but haven't been able to find where. My vague impression is that it's one of those obscure weird sculpins. Looking forward to progress reports on the Yukon reef. Should be fun.
Can't imagine why you didn't go diving that day! I'm seeing some real laidback entries in this footage. Some of those waves were only 20 footers! 🤣 Great stuff! Hopefully things are a bit calmer down there now.
Haha, i know huh.
1/10 video
You mean 10/10?
WOW I like, what drone do you fly because you have audio and my drone atm does not record audio at all some times lame but a nice to have.
This was from the DJI Mini 3 Pro but it doesn't record audio either. I downloaded sounds of waves and birds and added it in.
@@SDScuba That thing goes so far! I can't believe you flew it all the way from OB to the cove and handled to wind very well. Might have to get me one
@bloblablah7409 that would be pretty impressive If it went that far but it's not that amazing. I flew the route in multiple segments and combined the footage. I drove up and stopped at a bunch of spots, flew that section and moved onto the next one, then combined them. They're great fun though.
yo. useful done, have a good one! 😮
Would be fun as you're diving and see a fisherman's line grab it and run with it And have a friend on the beach record it
Hahahha, I got a big one boys! I do worry a bit about getting snagged sometimes.
Very helpful tour.
Thank you! this is one of my favorite southern California shore dives!
I just began reading the book "Whalefall" by Daniel Kraus. The setting is Monestary Beach. I searched KZread to get a better idea of the beach and the dangerous dropoff described in the novel. I must say, your video gave me an awesome mental image of it! I actually SAW the dropoff as you were diving. What a strange and beautiful world our oceans are! 🌊🐚🪸🐠
4And that drop-off is even worse in bigger surf. I just took a look at the book you mentioned an I'm considering ordering it. Did you enjoy it?
@@SDScuba Oh my goodness...it was a riveting read. I loved it! It sounds like a far-fetched plot, but the author made it very realistic. I highly recommend it. 🙂
This is a great video. That beach captured my imagination. Thanks.
Clickbait title kinda sucks
Since youre in SD. Last time I snorkled jn the L J cove the red tide was so bad we couldnt see anymore than a foot or two in front in front of us. Nice to see this clip. Have a safe trip back.
Thanks! Ya, the red tides can get pretty bad sometimes :(
Is this a ok place for new divers or should they try somewhere else?
Try San Carlos beach in Monterey for beginners
It's generally considered an advanced site. Consider talking to a guide if you'd like to dive it. Maybe dive San Carlos with them first and see what they say. Have fun!!
Fantastic dive guides as always SDScuba. I'm up in by Monterey but looking to dive in San Diego sometime, will definitely be following these guides
Ahh thanks, That's great to hear. I'm up in monetary occasionally but I've only done a couple dives there. A few months back I dove and made a video on the North Monastery dive. I'd like to come back and do a few more for other popular dives there. Maybe you'd be interested in buddying up sometime for that?
Bluntnose six gills are such cool sharks to observe
I love seeing these guys in the water. They look so prehistoric!
@@SDScuba for real Lol looks like they spawned in the wrong time period 😂. Gotta be honest it's one of the few shark species that as a whole are quite curious about us they don't really mind our company at all
7 gill shark I saw in La Jolla cove
Honestly, some of my most peaceful, restful, enjoyably, days of my life were fishing right there in that cove, one summer about 20 years ago. (Right about where all those hobie cats are parked in your vid.) On weekdays there was almost no crowd. Fun spot because you really needed to know your bait as to what your would catch. Anything dead, like clams, shrimp, squid, would get you a stingray, which were annoying. But using live ghost shrimp was likely for you to catch spotted bay bass, halibut, or Calico bass (aka Kelp bass). The later two, if large enough to be legal, are good eating. And the fish always came in schools. So nothing for hours, then bam, all three to four rods would go off at once. Which is what made it so relaxing, but worth fish, type of place. Great vid! And in case you are wondering, yes, 20 years ago, that was a very common scuba spot then too. They did a lot of training there.
Where do you get the ghost shrimp? Are those the ones people pump out of the sand. I see them over near dog beach sometimes collecting them.
i don't dive but i do hav an affinity for the outdoors/ the ocean is another world! i live right here in sd it was so cool to see this video. Just found ur chnl,,dope content!
A great dive, penetration or not. Currents can be tricky.
Great dive for sure but you can be right about those currents sometimes.
Super sick video
Thanks!
are you diving in converse?
Ya, He wears a DUI drysuit with the sock style feet so he has to wear a boot over the sock and went with the stylish Converse instead of the ones made for drysuits. My drysuit has an integrated boot which is nice, but when it wears out I have to have it replaces so his should last longer.
Wow bro it’s like a dream
For real right! It was beautiful 😍
Just want to say as a relatively newer local diver I find your videos extremely informative and well made. Thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad to know that it's helpful!
Very cool and nicely done Dan.
Thanks Peter! Had such a fun time with this dive. I can't wait to get back!
High value content as always. I'm not aware of any other channels that consistently provide such explicit dive guides.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Oh wow!! I've lived here for decades, but I'm not really a beach person. Fear of sea water. This makes me want to explore.❤❤❤
You should! Maybe take a tour to start
I want to go shore diving there. Do they really bother you? I don’t think it is clear enough for me. I want to be able to see them to be aware. Lol
They don't bother people but they will do fly bys like that sometimes.
Have you ever seen a great white out there?
Not while diving but Ive seen lots of juveniles from the cliffs near Blacks Beach. They're small though and eat small things like stingrays, not people.
I noticed you are not running a line for this video. What is your reason for not running a line? I'm a SoCal diver as well and I'm looking to get into wreck penetration this winter. I've only dove the Yukon once and it was on the outside and we mostly stayed around the guns.
Johnathan Schmitt addresses this question at 59:20 of his interview on Facebook. The interview is a little long so If you don't have time to watch the whole thing just skip to 59:20 and watch from there. facebook.com/DUI.Diver/videos/403937837559355
Awesome diving with you Dan, look forward to next one
Ya, such a fun dive! Hopefully we can get out there soon. So much fun running through the interior of that wreck.
Were you wearing a pair of converse?
@@jasonleng2490 absolutely I was 😃
Awesome video! I’ve dove the Yukon several times in the early 2000’s and always loved it. Thanks for sharing your experience.
It's a great dive! It would be great if they sank a few more out here. So much fun to explore.
