Excellent demo young man! And yeh, I've just got one of these beauties. Compared it to all sorts, and it shone. Given that it's brand new and has yet to cure , oh my . Glad you got a good un.

Aha! This was actually very helpful! I got a Neve MBT recently (my first outboard!) and seeing how you use it taught me a lot and now I'm getting a better sound. Thank you!

You feel that way simply because you have always used Protools. I have always used Cubase and do have Protools but prefer Cubase because the workflow is much better and hardware compatibility has always been better with Cubase. We won't even mention MIDI cause Cubase is by far, simply the best! ** I do love your videos but this one is totally off**

How do you get a good mix? Focus on the midrange. Cool. How do you do that? Just dial everything in. Sweet, what does that entail? Well, you have to really focus on the midrange.... 😦 😎

Rev A is my favorite of these three! :D For some reason, most 1176s always sounded pinched to my ears, especially at high gain reduction. The saturation of the Blue Stripe is something that really brings the lead vocal forward quite a bit more than the blackfaces. Needless to say, the Blue Stripe is my favorite for lead vocals.

Very wise advice and like you, I wish I could have told myself life-business lessons 20+ years ago. I would like to add to this list - do not rack up a huge amount of debt buying studio and/or musical gear especially when your business partners are your "friends"! My first studio in 2002, I teamed up with two other guys - we had a dream to the first "pro" studio in Salem, AL - we purchased $20K+ of gear, building supplies, sound proofing, etc. Eight months later - due to unforeseen circumstances, partnership/friendship dissolved, studio closed down and I was left with at least $10K of that debt still owed. Took me several years to climb out that hole. Hard lesson learned!

not to be fooled to think if you got right the middlerange the mix would be ready. You need the low range specificly very very well calibrated. It can take quite a time to be experieced enough to get it just right... and no solely sidechain or plugin tech will solve this. Mixing low is an Art in itsself and needs to bee mastered otherwise the midrange just would not shine. 😊

You CAN have both Red & Blue Silk if you have the patience to process one track at a time back to your DAW. I’ve never had a problem with running the output of a hi quality processor back into another one if you watch your gain properly. So just take the output of your first Newton into the input of your second Newton. Now you can make the first Newton “Red” and the second one “Blue”. You can also dial in some different EQ points on the second Newton. Regarding price - yes, not inexpensive but when you consider that you are getting outstanding A/D convertors, Neve Preamp, EQ, AND a Good compressor thrown in !?!? Wow. Just Wow!

Attack time on 1176 at 5 is a lot faster than attack time with the distressor at 5. Would be interested to see how they compare when theyre set for the same tupe of effect.

EQ & Comp: CS-5501 by TBProAudio Reverb: Rev305 by Fuse Audio Labs Side Note: I will say, that to get the majority of my results, I do use custom-made software and hardware. These recommendations are just for 100% commercial solutions that everyone has access to. Only a true audio software/ hardware nerd would understand. And I very much agree + more with the whole Atoms stuff. I'll do it of course because as engineers we all need to be well-versed of any standard the industry is asking for. However, this one has just never made sense to me. We have spent decades trying to get music consumers to get a halfway decent 2.0 speaker system. We have epically failed today as most people confide in their music experience with the exception of audio files with any stereo pair of headphones from Walmart gas station. On the upside of that, you're lucky if you have somebody who has Apple airpods. How in the hell are we jumping to 7 + channels, if we to never convinced the average consumer that a decent stereo system is worth it. I'm sorry, but it just doesn't make since to me.🙄🤦🏾‍♂️

Finally someone who isn't just saying 'I'm just using a bunch of Apollos' ;) Tbh, I start to get bit suspicious that UAD could have a KZread marketing campaign where they do a bunch of product placement artist's videos. Lots of I/O is great to have. Especially if you work a lot with a bunch of stereo synths and effects pedals you want to route. I think Antelope also offer high I/O count interfaces, like the 32 and even 64- channel Galaxy. For me, when I upgrade, I think I will go with Lynx Aurora (N), with my old interface on ADAT. I can live with 16 or 24 channels, if the synths and effects are off a mixer with a good number of aux channels. But 3-4k is still a lot of money for an interface for me, for now, nevermind 5k+5k.

Most audio sources are recorded at 44.1 kHz. A lot of compression algorithms operate at 44.1 kHz. Performing sample rate conversion (SRC) multiple times can result in pre-echo artifacts.

Hey Colt, isn't the 500 series mastering EQ you're looking for simply a stereo pair of API 550Bs? Recallable, 4 bands, perfectly balanced, punchy. If 2dB steps are too much, the 5500 can do 1 DB and 0.5 dB steps, so...
