My path was similar Colt. Guitarist in a band and handling show recording duties back in the 80s, turned into sound guy touring with A list artists and keeping my life simple so I could buy gear. Now 39 years as a pro audio guy, toured to 39 countries, works with household names, own a 3000 sq ft recording facility with a 56 ch Neve desk…where you end up is not always where you thought you would when you began your journey.

What you said in the end is crucial. Attachment to outcome really hampers a lot of us: like a guy who has a one-sided crush on his female friend and fails to notice all of the women who are actually interested in him, we tend to zone in on this one thing as if it's the only key to our happiness without knowing if it actually complements who we are. It's much more rewarding to learn and take in whatever skills you can learn. One just may awaken in them a talent they never knew they even had.

I also rode motocross and played guitar starting before high school but also wanted to fly. I have a bike and still noodle around on the guitar but I’ve been flying for over 42 years. It took a long time before it paid off and I’m happy and lucky doing what I love to do. I really admire musicians and those making a living in the music industry. It didn’t work out for me because I didn’t have the drive and dedication needed to succeed with music. My door opened for flying and I had the dedication there. Life has many turns.

Btw….I was also deep into motocross and so was my wife! Thru the 1995-2010 I was never home. I’d be out on a tour then come home and follow the AMA motocross/Supercross circuit turning wrenches for a pro rider… good times.

I became interested in recording - because I was tired of fighting for my ideas in a band: one or two members of the band wouldn't even want to *try* an idea in practice because of ego, inability, lack of imagination. I wondered what I'd be able to do if the human-element was removed. I started learning REAPER and bringing in instrument plugins to add the bass, drum, key parts that I had imagined. I dove into the composition/recording aspect of music and bailed on the band. So much more creativity. I'm still learning my tools - but nowhere near good enough yet. I love doing this - so even if I never get to 'pro-level', I'll still do it because it's so much fun. I'm curious about your journey mixing: going from sucking - to being okay - to getting momentum - to feeling confident in your mixes.

Nice ... The short version is, do it, but you have to enjoy it, it has to be your passion for you to go to the end and beyond. Like Charles Bukowski said: Don't try. I'm always laughing thinking about Michael Bolton situation in one interview when the reporter ask him: How does it feel to make it over night? And he said something like: Yes, it's great to make it over night after 13 years of hard work. 😄 The lesson is: It doesn't matter what happens as long as you enjoy what you do. If you're doing it only for money, forget it. it's a slow death inside.

This is a really important video for me to see right now. In the last year I've finally just started doing things that I've been meaning to do for awhile and while some things have grown slowly (like my social media presence) it feels so much better to at least be out there. I've been thinking about the necessity of being flexible too--like you for years I wanted to be a performer, and to an extent I still do. But I know I can't do it full time at this point, for a few different reasons (health, and other stuff out of my control). To an extent production is starting to work out for me, but I'm still waiting for the sign that something is working. In the meantime, throwing just about everything at the wall is pretty fun if nothing else. Having a guiding light in folks here on KZread and in other parts of my life has been so important, and I'm really thankful for that. For what it's worth, a midnight upload might also be the only time I'm early to watch. College does weird things to a person :)

I am curious to hear what you think about recording people at your home. Especially as gear piles up, I start to fear allowing people into my home as I continue growing my collection and tools. I know you get coffee before you work with clients and I'm sure that helps sus out some stuff. But I personally record rap, rnb, and pop. Particular characters coming from the rap community can be pretty suspect. and I wonder how far a 30 minute discussion while getting coffee can carry your ability to feel comfortable letting people into your home? How do you recommend going about defending your home studio and feeling comfortable letting folks into your home, especially at a beginning stage of recording for a career?

That’s a great question. At a very minimum, no one enters my home/studio without me having at least had a phone conversation with them. If I get even the slightest bit sketchy vibes, then I pass on the project. I know, unfortunately in the hip-hop communities that can be a bit harder to figure out. No one comes in without having paid a retainer, so that usually helps weed people out. I have a security system, and cameras on all the exits of my home and studio. And something that I never discussed on this channel, I am a strong, second amendment supporter. So even though that is by far the last resort, God help the person that tries to break in and steal something from my place.

Start doing what you love is definitely very important even with limited resources. There is a lot of gear and techniques which we think we need to have to get better but actually it’s practice and working with what you have. I’m talking from a mixing engineer’s perspective. There js so much info and so many great engineers out there that it could be overwhelming. Just start doing it a lot and commit yourself to keep trying to make each mix a little better. I buildup my setup with cheap gear to get me started and slowly through the years invested in more and better equipment. Now it looks pretty good but years went by to get there. I’m still not as good as I want to be but I keep on pushing to get better step by step 😊 Great video as always Colt, hope it inspires people to go for their passion and keep growing stronger 🤟🏼😎
