    My father never talked much of family. Upon looking up my exes and how his family was given land and title for saving a king from a charging stag. I looked up mine and the first thing I saw was glencoe. I called my dad and was like WTH? He says well it wasn’t really a massacre it wasn’t that many people… yep guess we are Campbells.

    Fantastic documentary. Which gave a lot of nuances to Darian situation other than the version taught to most of the 'feckless Scots! The part you mentioned never gets talked about how Scotland was cut off from its trading partners. No protection from the royal navy these factors are conveniently forgetting.

    Bid for Empire??? It was an escape from Empire !! The English had set their sights on all their neighbours since its inception ,inc those on the main continent . Scotland had slowly been drained by invasion after invasion , trade embargos , political interference ,bribes , in other words England was ALWAYS at war with Scotland even when no armies fought . This so called '' Darien'' scheme was a plan to get round the crippling trade embargos .It failed . England made its next move . Threat of invasion .Bribery and manipulation had always been at play but this very real threat of war was more than Scotland could take .The Scottish state collapsed .However ,many had ofc seen this coming and in 1689 The Scottish Claim of Rights act was introduced . A lifeline should the worst happen and England finally conquer Scotland that act enshrines the people of Scotland as sovereign over the state . There was no voluntary ''Union'' . England didn't come to help out it's poor wee troubled neighbour coz they failed at building their own version of empire .The lie thats been told is laughable if you know anything about English history .

    @@UtopiaPlanitiaStudios Which begs the question: Why did no one at the time ask the pertinent questions of, "where", "when", "who" and of course "How are you going to protect this from...well, everyone else?" 6:40 Sectarianism occurs when members of a different denomination , within the same faith , experience prejudice, hatred, and/or discrimination based on being from a different sect. This religious or sect-based affiliation often exists as a differentiated relationship to power and may have socio-political and/or security-based consequences. Sect-based religious identification and sectarianism have been recognized as having a so-called double function in terms of legitimation of power and privilege, as well as in protest and opposition. This definition was graciously provided by Hannah Hamill who's literacy skills are obviously at a considerably higher level than mine . .

    30:15 But the key point here is that when William of Orange and Mary II ascended the throne , during their Coronation Oath, in April 1689 , they swore to recognize the Sovereignty of Parliament . As the House of Commons was an elected body , this is the beginning of Democracy in the modern World . However , at the time , only land owners had the vote . Then in November , the 1689 English Bill of Rights passed . So James II ( VI ) was the last absolute Monarch , and William and Mary were the first Constitutional Monarchs . William was a miserable sod , who went along with this because his focus was having the English help the Dutch defeat the French . Then Enlightenment ideas started to be take hold - John Locke , Issac Newton , Adam Smith .

  • @UtopiaPlanitiaStudios
    @UtopiaPlanitiaStudiosАй бұрын

    I hear you. 👍 The political, democratic and intellectual progress made during William and Mary’s reign is indeed considerable, but it’s not really the focus of this film… and it certainly wasn’t “the beginning of modern democracy”. Britain was actually pretty late to the party in terms of decentralising power from the monarch. That said, we go into considerable detail regarding the massive changes during William’s reign in the sequel, ‘Inglorious Revolutions II: Act of Union’ which you can watch here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mICorMx_esbSlJs.htmlsi=pBB2r0GDWzzb4q1y

    Anglo Saxons? Nothing to do with the Highlands...you mean Scots and Picts?

  • @UtopiaPlanitiaStudios

    I think you misunderstand. Scots - Anglo-Saxons- were in the Lowlands; the south east of Scotland which became Alba. The “Highlanders” of this age were, as far as we know, Pictii. There is no conclusive evidence to make unqualified statements about who was where so long ago. We can theorise, but not state as fact.
