    I bought the GFX 100S today, and because of the spring sale, also placed an order for the 20-35mm. I was having second thoughts about it when I picked up the camera, as the salesman said "oooh that's going to be WIDE!". I didn't quite understand if he meant that as a positive or negative thing. Seeing your video have made me question this choice less. It's still an unsettling amount of money for "was it the right choice?". I have found a second hand 63mm for a very good price which I'll get within the end of next week, so at least I should have something to get started in this new dimension of medium format. The question remains though; what tele lens should I get... 110mm? 45-100mm? 100-200mm? I can only pick one, because the price vs range is crazy compared to what I'm used to with Olympus. :D

  • @Alex_SMK
    @Alex_SMK2 ай бұрын

    Firstly, congrats on the GFX! Yeah, 20-35 can be too wide sometimes, but it all depends on the application of course. At least you have some choices, unlike with 23mm or Laowas. As for the tele, I've only tried 110 and 45-100, so can't tell too much about the 100-200 except that you can find them pretty darn cheap as of late. 45-100 is a workhorse made for pretty much anything you throw at it, especially in the controlled lighting scenarios. No need to constantly change lenses and the IS is really neat since they work together with IBIS. And of course the LM is a treat to use. Buying a lens for work and shooting in different genres, this lens would be on the top of my list, probably. But boy oh boy, it's a chunky one, haha. 110 is a portrait machine. If your main thing is portraits and fixed 85mm is where you like to be, it's a no-brainer. I know F2 is tempting, but the depth of field on it is not always practical for the optimal portraits. But when you need it - it's simply put - wonderful, if not the best. No IS - not a big deal, but shutter speed has to be… you know the drill. And it's not light or small either. Just some info for you to consider. At the end of the day, I can't choose for you. But I hope it helps somehow. Oh, and thank you a lot for watching!

    Thank you. I, personally, think GR4 or whatever it's gonna be called won't come till 2025, now that Ricoh announced the HDF models. Which, yeah, is kind of old-ish by our conditioned beliefs that the new model should come every year or two. Of course, fingers crossed for the new one to arrive earlier, but hey, let them cook it right, you know, I'm in no rush. Seems like the Fuji - is a safer bet for you now. At least you don't have to worry that the new model is going to be released soon, and they are in high demand. Of course, if you can get one for a reasonable price.

    I really enjoyed your video. I have collected many older digi-cams like: Nikon, Canon, Kodak, Olympus, Samsung, Casio. I think you offered wise advice on trying to find old digi-cams from family, garage sales, thrift stores, etc because that is where it appears a person will find the best value. A person may find a particular model on E-Bay but what I have found is every time there's a KZread video about an old camera the prices on E-Bay goes up and a lot of times the camera is over priced. Best of luck in your photography journey. Best Duane

    How can you compare 2 cameras with totally different shots ?

  • @Alex_SMK

    What is your opinion on using raw photos on both cameras at high ISO? Do you see any type of advantage over either of the two?

  • @Alex_SMK
    @Alex_SMK4 ай бұрын

    Being technical, let me put it this way: The X100V and now the VI have the edge over GRIII and GRIIIx at high ISO (I'm talking about everything that's higher than 3200 and in terms of noise only), hence the older sensor tech in the GRIII. I'd say it's like the X100F with the IBIS (if there was one at that time). But again, this is really rough and subjective comparison because the lens is stupid sharp on the GR, and no X-trans pattern adds to the mix. I personally like to work with DNGs more than with RAFs for now. If I ever come back to JPG only, I'll give it to Fuji for sure. All depends on how you shoot and what you need.

    "While we are waiting for a complete weather sealed Ricoh GRIV..." Do you guys have some new info about the GRIV we don't know about or is this just some random comment ? I'm asking because I want to buy a Ricoh but I'm scared to have the GRIV being released just a few weeks after I buy a GRIII.

  • @Alex_SMK
    @Alex_SMK4 ай бұрын

    Unfortunately for all of us, me included, this is just a desire for the fully weather sealed GR. If they ever come up with such GR I'd be genuinely surprised. My general advice would be, buy a camera if it offers what you need right now. Otherwise, it's a race that you can't keep up with without spending money all the time. At the same time, I understand your concern, but looking at the Ricoh's last release being GRIII diary edition, I would say you're safe for another half a year, maybe a year or so before they release anything else.

    @@Alex_SMK Thanks for the info. I already have a full-frame Sony (A7 IV) with good glass that I use for most of my work. However, for street photography, carrying something like that all the time is not ideal. The form factor of the Ricoh GRIII would allow me to have a camera in my pocket at all times, ready to shoot. I think I'm going to buy one for that very purpose.

It’s not going to replace my X100V any time, but I shoot it in monochrome exclusively and it brings back all the memories. He took 18,000 photos with it based on his iPhoto library, and I’m proud to add more from time to time. Before film recipes and the TikTok craze, we had the OG. It’s like my dad was in real life: quirky and stubborn, a little slow and occasionally maddening, but also beautiful and loyal. The sum is greater than its individual flaws. Like all of us humans.

    One thing to keep in mind, you not gonna learn photography using an old digi cam, you will just get frustrated with the limitations you will face. Digi cam are fun for someone who is already comfortable with photography and what to experiment with what kind of results you can achieve with the gear limitations. One Month 2 Cameras is a bad example, she suffers from GAS (Gear Aquisition Syndrome) but her photographic skills are not up to par with her theoretic knowledge of cameras. She is simply more of a camera collector than a photographer… My advise if you want to learn photography: buy a half decent camera body and an decent lens and invest time and money in learning the proper skills at first. If you have a modern cellphone, you already have a much more capable camera than any of the few years old point and shoot digital cams.

    Everyone needs to be aware these cameras with permanent zooms tend to suck dust back onto the sensor when the zoom closes back in or when the camera is turned off. A quick test is take a pic of the sky completely zoomed in. You'll see it fast. Dark worms. So, keep your camera inside something that's dust and lint free when you travel, and wipe off the sides of the zoom fully extended before you turn it off. Fingers are fine. And the camera you want is the Canon Elph 310. It has an 8x optical zoom, i.b.i.s., 12 meg pics, great macro. I interposed shots using the Elph in my short film noir along with my main camera, a Canon 5D Mark II, mostly for moving camera shots, and no one has ever noticed it. No One. Here's the film: Bum Rap Andre Hunt

    It's the quick preset during the import in Capture One. Just make or find something you like and make it a default one when importing the photos from the camera. Luckily, there are a lot of creators sharing their presets these days, so there is a plenty to choose from, hehe. I was just having fun with this particular camera, since I love the sliding door ones.
