The other thing what is brilliant, all those things you encountered are there even if you go there for something else. It feels like the world is made out of "small scenes" that you can discover. And they all give some new info or reward. And the best part most of these scenes have some progression, with chapters or with dealing quests. At one point that guy you helped is dead because seekers are there. Or he is leaving his camp because of orcs. All kind of little story. You can also encounter them any other way, heck you can even kill everyone, and not finnish any of those quests, keep the cross bow. You can do a lot things, and the game lets you do it. You can get the Crossbow by accident, when you search for the eye of innos. And meet Dragomir after.

easiest way to beat the troll is run under his arms and always stay behind him, he will never be able to turn as fast as you run so you can beat him lvl1 and bare handed, i did that once, it took like 15 minutes but its funny. (Though its better to save that moment till you learn to skin him)

Objection. Skyrims fast travel is realistic. If you pay attention, time actually does pass. That said, my favourite type of fast travel is the type used in MMOs. Teleportation magic. Wouldn't work for all games, but does for fantasy games.

The reason they took out perma death is because most of time you DIDNT lose chars from mistakes. You lost them becuase of bad luck. One or two crits and a proc is all it takes at every part of game. A better solution would have simply been a way to resurrect chars. Maybe even limited use but possble just expensive

Another cool fast travel system I really liked was what was in Stalker: Call of Pripyat. If you were to come across a group of stalkers out in the world, and if they were on their way back to a settlement, you could tag along with them which would basically just fast travel you to the settlement. The thing is though, you have to happen across these stalker groups, and sometimes they’ll be in combat so you might even have to assist them. This makes it to where the ability to fast travel is something to be found, and not a certainty to come across, making the player appreciate those moments where they can. Because even if the player comes across other stalkers, not all stalker groups are on their way to a settlement and the player isn’t always looking to go to a settlement anyways. It’s a pretty cool little feature and as far as I know, the only game that has it.

The one game that I believe has an even better map is KCD on hardcore mode. Its just a beautifuly drawn historical map, no indicators, not even where you are currently, you have to look around to figure out your location. But Gothics map suits its world and atmosphere perfectly. And it is an actual in-world item which is just incredible, even with an animation of the Nameless Hero looking at it.

I haven't played Morrowind, so call me what you like, but I don't think it's that easy. I mean, look at Oblivion's map for instance. The cities are very far apart from each other, especially south of Chorrol. You only have nine cities across a map that's about 2.5 times the size of Morrowind's map, that also includes way more cities and towns. If you want a system like Morrowind's, you need to plan your entire world around that, or it will just be pain to walk everywhere.

Awesome video! I played a lot of World of Warcraft, which also included a fast travel system that looks a bit like this. I definitely prefer it over instant click travel. World of Warcraft only has instant fast travel with boats and teleportation portals: for the city-to-city travel, you have to watch a (admittedly quite fast) flying creature take you there. It shows you the world even if you're not actively walking yourself.

What you're not addressing is that Gothic 2 NotR has probably the worst atribute leveling system that requires a lot of metagaming and even now, nobody made the perfect guide on when to start spending LPs on the ancient language and perma potions. This really makes people hoarding King's Sorrels, Apples, Mushrooms and Thekla's stews just to be consumed at the end of the game.

Its that age old debate of destination vs. journey. Skyrim does well by providing either or, but Morrowind's is like both at once. Dark souls 1 also did well, as you had to earn fast travel. But it is easier as you the player become better. The player learns how to deal with the game, morrowind and ds1 had this cannon/meta explanation for the player becoming better after each playthrough, amazing writing and organic difficulty from both games. What happened, Todd?😂

Also worth mentioning: the non-instant fast travel options have the same effects as resting. Since you can't rest in cities, you can use them to partially or fully replace renting a bed The fact that magicka doesn't regenerate also helps to not abuse teleportation spells

What I think got shoveled away the most was the feeling that I fucked up when a week was not successful. Sometimes, the RNG fucked you up good, yeah. But most of the times you did things wrong: Not enough bandages, pushing forward without enough torches, using your hands to clear a corridor instead of taking a detour, fighting one more fight. Now I don't feel like I am preparing a team for a difficult task, grinding some expeditions to raise gold so I can buy more equipment, managing the mental health of my adventurers... It's just Slay the Spire but half the fun, double the RNG.

Something that just happened to me a couple of days ago on a new run od DD1; i wanted to go into a dungeon with a team of 4 crusaders as it was a pretty solid team on a short quest, but i only had 4 Crusaders and Reynauld being one of them was a level too high to enter, so i just recruited a new crusader with good skills and went right on. He died, in fact he was the only one that died and i still remember his name, it was Ferrieres. He didn't made a crusial sacrifice to save the others, nor a last crucial attack nor even was with the party for long as it was his first quest, but it hurt, i magined him as that new and young soldier on movies sorrounded by experienced soldiers and to think that not only did he died but that was also the only one...

While I personally like limiting my fast travel I also understand the need for it for people who have limited time, ADHD have played the game a hundred times already an don’t want to waste a ton of time getting into a new character build or game so while I personally don’t love to use it I understand it NEEDS to be available, then folks can either choose to use it or ignore it, everyone gets what they want! On a side note I do agree that Morrowind had an intuitive system that was done well

When you drowned that Black troll in the lake I thought what a waste of 1k exp and messing up the quest for it's hide! But really in our first playthroughs we messed up alot of things due to lack of knowledge. That is why Gothic 1 and 2 have such a strong replayability value. You always discover new things about them.

Never played Morrowing, only started at Skyrim. So something like this would be a big inconvienance to my spoil gamer brain. Mainly the reason why I don't play old games (for me anything before 2004 save for RTS games). But I admit that I can see the appeal to this. Immersion is the only reason why I'm literally spending hours just making sure all my Skyrim mods works correctly before I even play. Maybe to bridge the gap, information, like that travel map, should is presented in game instead of having to jump off game to look at a fan made map, since this is also immersion breaking. Then again with how old and how active the modding community in these games are, I'm sure there are mods to address this.

Using fire rain on a single shadowbeast is such a waste though. You're not giving a very good example of how to use one of the rarest scrolls in the game. There's only, maybe, 2 fire rain scrolls in the first chapter, which is where you'll need them the most. And they can help you clear hordes of high experience enemies with a single cast. For example, the valley with the cave near Khorinis that is guarded by 7 wargs and 1 shadow beast - that 's 2400 experience, that you can take right away if you draw them and cast the spell properly before they kill you (might take a few save reloads). Otherwise, If not for that scroll, you'll be having a very hard time clearing that valley before chapter 3. Also, you give bad example of usig powerful transformation scrolls. Transformations are permanent, you only get back in human form when you decide to cancel the spell, so when transforming into a powerful creature you have to make the best of it and kill as many enmies as possible until you health is low enough and you're forced to go back in human form in order to heal. Transforming into a shadowbeast or a dragon snapper, just to kill a few bandints and then wasting the rest of the spell potetial by going back to human form, is a bad use of such spells! There's also a way to enter the old fortress in Gothic 1 without using the transfor into meatbug scroll. Turning left from the gate, there's a cliff you can climb on, to specific spot where the wall is destroyed and you jump down into the courtyard.

I love gothic II but literally this is the game that punish more the player when he don`t play with efficiency and use the scrolls when they are suppose to be used... (I'm refering to the strongest ones like fire rain, of course fire arrow can be waste without any problem). So sorry but your wrong, the problem which is also one of the reason why this game is fo fucking hard is that you need to know the game in order to use things in the correct way, this means that you need to waste some run (i drop my first two runs because i didn`t play the game correctly and i was way to weak to continue it).

Honestly i think MGSV does it best, you can only fast travel to few points, you call the chopper and only travel to specific landing zones and then finish the rest of the distance on foot, horse or vehicle... and using the chopper costs you money. This forces you to not only explore more of the world, but also gives you a better use of the game tools, you will find yourself using everything at your disposal, you'll use the chopper a lot but mostly for evac, otherwise you will end up prefering the horse. Unlike let's say Skyrim, you'll go to a destination on horse one time and then never cross that distance again, and that ofc considering you actually crossed the distance, many people just take carriage to the nearest city at first, i think fast travel should be limited and not for free.

0:27 If traveling 20 minutes across the map for a simple task isnt fun, the whole map/world is neither complex nor well designed. The argument of fast travle defeats itself, no matter the game, nor perspective. The only actual argument anyone can bring, which is not selfimploding on the spot, is: It safes real time. Ok well, then we need to apply an equally qestion outside the game: Why do you play in the first place? Because story - well you can watch a movies aswell. There is no argument wether ingame nor outside of it for fasttraveling. The only argument which really is a point from the side of development: We want to have a big world to advertise, but we dont have the means to actually fill it. Best example for exactly that would be Daggerfall or more recent Dragon Age origins.

For me personally, DD1 is a Trauma simulator, and it still lives it name till today. I can still vividly remember the day I lost the dismas and reynauld. It was the first darkest dungeon, entered the dungeon with the first team ever. Dismas, Reynauld, vestal, and plague doctor. All was good until it wasn't, the tentacle guy double crit'd my vestal, put her on the death door, the next hit vestal dies, all went downhill from there. Dancing in front of the death door's managed to survive with the healing of reynauld and PD, only for dismas to be killed by heart attack which lead to heart attack domino for the whole team. And then there I am, in the hamlet, staring blankly. Clicked the graveyard, you can see all your dead heroes and all of them four is there, dead never to return again. Meanwhile on DD2 now, you have memorial for the surviving heroes. For me it was this that makes it less "interesting". You have all the time to remember the living, but no way to mourn for the dead. And i miss the caretaker mocking me whenever i checked the graveyard
