We focus mostly on non-Euclidean geometry, but other mathematics/CS or roguelikes can appear here too.

Videos are overrated. Do not watch videos, go play HyperRogue!

Non-Euclidean geometry videos are using our RogueViz engine, supported by the National Science Centre, Poland, grant UMO-2019/35/B/ST6/04456.

    Geometry specifies how two dimensions interact. so S1, E1 and H1 is the same thing. And x means that the dimension between components do not interact (i.e., in Euclidean way), so you just get Euclidean space.

    zeno, im lagging a lot in rogueviz demos, how do i stop the lag?

  • @ZenoRogue
    @ZenoRogue7 күн бұрын

    You mean low framerate? * Some demos are just slow (the videos are not rendered in real time) * either for a good reason (generally, rendering non-Euclidean geometries is sometimes very hard computationally) or because they have not been optimized well * if you have bad hardware (CPU/GPU), they might work better on good hardware * it is often possible to reduce the quality -- which improves the framerate but has its costs (for example by reducing the rendering range by pressing '1' 'r' )

    so can you make an sandbox that lets you modify the geometry like in the video? like this gui _______________________________________ | X multiplier : 0.5 +------- 1 | | Y multiplier : 0.5 +------- 1 | | Fold Y? : [ON] - [OFF] | | Fold X? : [ON] - [OFF] | | _Custom X/Y formula? : [ON] - [OFF] _| because im curious if i can make spherical geometry and more :D and the custom x/y formula would change the x/y multiplier 2 an formula input that would have a default euclidean formula and u can modify it with variables NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST, UP, DOWN and start = (x,y,z) example is (x,y - north*z)

  • @ZenoRogue
    @ZenoRogue6 күн бұрын

    The problem is that (in the current implementation) modifying the geometry this way needs recomputing some stuff, which takes some time.

    I accidentally discovered something like this when playing with Hypermine! This game could be configured to not use air resistance in its physics. If the player will jump from a tower or a hill too tall while air resistance is disabled - while falling the player may miss the ground and start to perpetually fly in some sort of an orbit "around" the ground, despite the fact that this ground is actually flat! Well, mostly flat - it has hills and stuff. Weirdly, when left flying this way, the player will slowly raise both its "apoapsis" and its "periapsis" if these words are even suitable here, I guess they raise because of slight imperfections of gravity calculations that result in slow accumulation of speed by the player

    I’d like to see a similar video covering some of the other Thurston geometries, specifically Solv and the other one with a weird name; most of them (the X^3 and X^2xE) are pretty straightforward expansions of 2D spherical/hyperbolic geometries, but I don’t understand those two.

  • @ZenoRogue
    @ZenoRogueАй бұрын

    Our video "Non-Euclidean third dimension" includes a similar explanation of Solv. The one with the weird name is also called twisted H2xR, while Nil is twisted E2xR -- just take Nil as explained here and replace the NESW plane with the hyperbolic plane. But there is more to say about it (like, why that weird name), so we will likely make a video about it at some point.

    Interesting that even when you exit Euclidean space, the floor is tiled with four squares to a vertex (which would not be true if you were in elliptic/hyperbolic space), gives some incite into how this was rendered/coded.
