    The more I hear maple, the more I appreciate the clarity and the fullness of tone. I can't help but think, at least with the Indian Rosewood, that there was a cloth over the microphone that seemed in a small way to dull the overall sound. There seemed to be more bass with the rosewood, but the higher register seemed to lose some of the the 'shine' that I hear in the maple. Granted, these are minor differences in the sound. But when we're paying large amounts of money for wonderful instruments, we should strive to get the kind of sound we want. My $0.02 worth.

    Great video! I'm curious about the block you put under the head to set the angle for the band saw the vee. The blade will undercut the proper amount if you saw through the center line but shouldn't the angle change slightly like the side cut of a jack rafter? Perhaps I'm wrong and should stick to building houses...

    Underlying this comparison is the delightful fact that James' conception of good guitar tone is right in my arena, and he is consistent in his results. FWIW my growing impression of Brazilian is that, at least for recording purposes, it has a very narrow construction 'sweet spot' in which to gain the benefits without bringing in overly bright articulation sounds.

    Funny, I thought I would prefer the braz but I think the maple was the most balanced and articulate in all registers.

    Hi James A very interested comparison, difficult to judge over KZread. If I had to put them in order of preference it would be the Maple first, then the Indian Rosewood and the Brazilian last. To me the Maple had slightly better tone separation and dynamic range but I suspect they sound very different 'live'.

  • @jmdlister
    @jmdlister Жыл бұрын

    Hi Stephen, I agree the recordings don't really do the sound justice, so it's difficult to judge. I really like the maple as well. The Brazilian sounds a little harsh in this recording, but I don't remember it sounding like that "in the wood".

    Is this functionally better than a scarf joint or is this more of an aesthetic/tradition sort of thing? It's beautiful work

  • @jmdlister
    @jmdlister2 жыл бұрын

    It's believed that one purpose of the V-joint was to allow the joint to fail in a way that was easy to repair. In theory, the joint will fail cleanly on the glue line, and be relatively easily glued back together, but yes, it's mostly about aesthetics.

    Thanks for the tutorial. But this is way too much work and for what? I prefer the scarf joint, 10 degrees. It’s never failed and is extremely strong. But I do appreciate your effort, and your tutorial on this joint. Maybe someday I will do this just to say I did it.

  • @jmdlister
    @jmdlister3 жыл бұрын

    Nothing wrong with a scarf joint. It's believed that one purpose of the V-joint was to allow the joint to fail in a way that was easy to repair. In theory, the joint will fail on the glue line, without damaging the wood, and can be relatively easily glued back on. I haven't yet tested this theory though! I mainly do V-joints because I love the look of them.
