If the video starts with daylight, continues at night and ends with daylight again, you can imagine how challenging this joint is 😂 Very impressive display of woodworking technique. Bravo.

That chisel and block is such a powerful technique when executed with care and patience. Great example. It might take 5 minutes... it might take an hour. It takes what it takes for good work.

Is this functionally better than a scarf joint or is this more of an aesthetic/tradition sort of thing? It's beautiful work

It's believed that one purpose of the V-joint was to allow the joint to fail in a way that was easy to repair. In theory, the joint will fail cleanly on the glue line, and be relatively easily glued back together, but yes, it's mostly about aesthetics.

I had to cut it out with a hand saw.... Figured out that with using a rasp and fitting sandpaper inside and rubbing the parts against each other can be quite helpful

Great video! I'm curious about the block you put under the head to set the angle for the band saw the vee. The blade will undercut the proper amount if you saw through the center line but shouldn't the angle change slightly like the side cut of a jack rafter? Perhaps I'm wrong and should stick to building houses...

The shoulders are end grain, and the V-joint is at about 60 degrees to the grain.

Yes. Never quite understood how placing the plane flat on some wood was supposed to do more harm to the blade than pushing it repeatedly through some rosewood or ebony.

Thanks for the tutorial. But this is way too much work and for what? I prefer the scarf joint, 10 degrees. It’s never failed and is extremely strong. But I do appreciate your effort, and your tutorial on this joint. Maybe someday I will do this just to say I did it.

Nothing wrong with a scarf joint. It's believed that one purpose of the V-joint was to allow the joint to fail in a way that was easy to repair. In theory, the joint will fail on the glue line, without damaging the wood, and can be relatively easily glued back on. I haven't yet tested this theory though! I mainly do V-joints because I love the look of them.
