  "operations over variables" generalized to the extreme could mean anything, which doesn't really add to totality of our knowledge. why implore someone to do that? Then 1st question from the audience, in response to how he would define symobols, "you can define a symbol in such a way that it encompasses everything or nothing. And I don't think that's where the debate should be". there's a lot of handwaving going on.

  There was some good content in there but get a better moderator. His name doesn't deserve to be in the two sentence description for this video THREE TIMES while NOAM. MOTHERFUCKIN. CHOMSKY is once. Seriously tho, how is this a debate? This is a self-indulgent pantomime by the "moderator" ... who shuts down entire speeches and positions (e.g. Jeff Clune, who actually had one of the most interesting perspectives) simply by saying "I don't agree with you -- maybe I'll respond later," &c Actually his only real feedback is that he agrees, and building up for his self-indulgent editorialisation at the end, and pushing his pop-sci book. Waste of some talented speakers in the same forum between whom an actual debate could have occurred.

  This video is best experienced at 1.5x speed. Seldom do I listen to accelerated dialogue, but this one sounds completely natural when sped up and helps comprehension a lot for those of us with poor short term memory or ADHD.

  One thing I don’t understand in the nativist argument is that the hardcoded priors were also learnt, just by a slower learning algorithm. Even if we discovered that 99% of the brain’s inner workings are native, it wouldn’t necessarily disprove that they can be learnt. Nature has to balance survivability and adaptability

  I think (or hope) what Yejin was trying to say with the "don't kill all trees" point was that we need to figure out a way to impart ecosystem science and ethics to a prospective AGI - the sense of a fragile whole comprised of millions of parts where every part is highly valued both for its role in the integrity of the whole as well as an evolutionary inheritance that took millions of years to create. It is a bit concerning that all the ethicists on this panel are so human-centered and the word ecosystem never came up once.

  You are thinking of ethics from the wrong perspective, there is a method to do so easily, you are just not approaching it from the correct point of origin, however, we all know that we are not going to give our AI any ethics, it is just a complete waste of time to cover such a topic, nobody here thinks that you will give it the ability to reason on it's own, so stop it right there. We give soldiers a directive to kill and we expect them to ignore their ethics, and so we are expected to believe that you want man kind's, "Digital Child", to have thoughtful considerations; I think not!
