    Tune shop tech here: Get pivots, they will outlast your skis they are the best on the market

  • @amateurstanding

    Pivot 14’s and below aren’t all metal, just an FYI. You’ll see when you try em out when you pre release in a hairy situation and if you get back to a better-balanced position, you’ll snap back into the binding, it’s a very odd feeling. Also, the new Pivots are releasing later this year. Shops have begun posting pics on IG.

    Really enjoy your videos. Thank you. I was wondering how you would rate these skis (Atomic Maverick 88 TI) for the East coast? I realize that is a generic question but you are very familiar with east coast conditions. I mostly stay on groomers but I am considering these skis because of their groomer performance and ability in the glades, off trail etc... Short background. I really enjoyed Kendo 88 this season on the east coast but I agree with your video about how they are difficult to change turns quickly (definitely noticed this when I went into the glades). The enforcer 94 was fun but a little too much of a ski for me. They were fun but exhausting (possibly because of bad form etc...). I tried the QST 92 and 98 in Alaska for more powder (not super deep on the days I went but enough to enjoy some float) and I loved them but then I tried them on the east coast and they were tough for me to be comfortable on (once again, could be due to bad technique). I would say I am almost an Intermediate skier but that is my opinion haha. Thank you.

    Funny you mention picking up an 88 or 92 width ski, watching your channel awhile now has caused me to consider this. I do enjoy carving and a Ti88 sounds like a good idea if we're stuck w/a wk of bulletproof. I did have a pair of 21/22 Head Kore 93s but lost 1 in the woods in deep powder; I am going to hunt for it soon!

    Thanks Elliot! I think you've convinced me the QST 106 or the Rossi Sender 110, I've noted how much you LOVE QST 106 and I do like that it's Sendy. I'm a Tahoe skier SugarBowl & Palisades are my home mtns. The Revolt 104's a lot of fun very playful w/the twin tips yet I could straight line powder in them, until +3ft anyways! I have a young friend who rips them in corn snow, I love them in the mashed pot, it's pretty much a ripper ski except in anything hard. It's my 53rd bday today thanks for the shout out!

    Pivots have the greatest amount of elasticity, so they don’t pre-release like other models. Setting the forward pressure is an art and you do it by feel. Make sure the shop knows how to mount them.

  • @lassivaatamoinen5468

    7:15 Basically Pivots should feel rather smooth, due to the amount of elastic travel, and more friendly in a rougher terrain. Also some people say that the drill pattern for mounting the binding is quite tight, so the binding allows ski to flex more naturally. Also, too little elastic travel and you can have unexpected binding releases in some situations. I personally had one incident in the spring slush this year, when my Salomon Shifts were set with slightly too low DIN, and I left one ski into a slush bump due to heel release. For example same low DIN on a Marker Griffon would have been just fine.

  • @Outofthelimits
    @Outofthelimits4 сағат бұрын

    Nice summary of the topic. Most of us are probably fine on almost any binding on the market. Slight nod to pivots since I have not ever had to adjust the DIN due to prerelease like I have with other bindings, but there's a lot of factors at play there so who knows. fyi- bobleisure used to have deals on pivots, might still occasionally. Mine showed up dinged but were "only" 250

    As a certified binding mechanic I always recommend high quality products from all the manufacturers that being said those made of alloy metals last the longest for those high end skiers that put them through hell and the recreational skiers that have 30 to 40 skier days per year buy junk buy twice 🇨🇦

    Ive had the look 12 binding from 2010, they lasted really long with good performance. They broke after I was training for nose butters, the metal base plate broke from metal fatigue. So they lasted 13 years or around 150 ski days. Ive bought the look pivot 15 last year and they feel good. Have not had any real crashes to test them out tho, but build quality seems good. I regret getting the colorful almost pride looking ones, hard to match with rest of ski gear, so I would just go for gold or black ones.

    Atomic strives are a MUCH more affordable and stylish pair of bindings. They also have a very close amount of elastic travel that the pivots are known for.

    I love the pivots and SPX. im a wanna be free ride skier doing spin tricks in most conditions at fast speeds. Pivots 15/18s have veritcal toe release aswell. I have had pivot 15s outlive the skis they are on. i ski look spxs aswell on my beater park skis and i have some griffons on my wildcat 108s. if you get a powday to try some revolts get some 114s to try. my favorite snowbird/alta ski.

    I’m sure mine is not a popular opinion but I don’t see the plus side of the look pivot bindings. There is nothing about a normal binding that does not allow the lower leg to “pivot” at any pivot point necessary and not just the Look pivots “one” pivot point. I see it as a constriction. Also, similar to other bindings, it does not allow the heel to eject straight sideways, except that pivot arm is to the side of the boot blocking it worse than a normal binding in an attempt to eject sideways.

    Epic and Ikon (Aspen and Vail corps) are perfect examples of corporate greed. These large corporations must do everything they can to pump up their stock price and very few look at the long term effects, it's all about what can they do now in the short term so the CEO and board members can stay in power. This is why they try to sell so many passes and punish you if all you want is a day ticket at any of their ski areas which is ridiculously high. Unfortunately many independent ski areas follow what the big guys do. When I started skiing in the 70's a lift ticket was $11 and I remember an article that came out in Ski or Skiing magazine in the early 80's announcing the highest lift ticket in the country at Stratton Mountain in VT would be $20 the next season. So in 40 years daily lift ticket prices have shot up over 10x. I want to get my grandkids on skis at my local POS hill in Southern PA and was shocked when I added up the costs for a ski school package. It came out to around $250 for each kid. Even if I teach them myself a lift ticket for each of them will be over $100 plus rentals and this of course includes the 30-45 minute lift lines to get on crawling fixed grip museum pieces thrown in to really make an enjoyable experience for them. I don't even know if they'll like it. I'd rather spend that money at Disney World for them which isn't inexpensive either but I know they'll love it. Skiing/boarding is once again becoming a sport for the rich, especially if you want to take your family for a week to a major ski area. I went on a week long trip with my buddy at mostly Ikon resorts in Utah because he gets a season Ikon pass every year. Fortunately I was able to get buddy passes at most of the ski areas we went to but it was still $1000 more than if we had gone to Canada, our original plan, where ticket prices are lower and the exchange rate is very favorable to the US$. Hoping Western Canada has a better winter for 24/25 than this past winter. Red Mountain, Kicking Horse, Whitewater....can't wait.

    I’ve felt pretty frustrated as I try to invite friends into the sport and watch as they struggle with the insane price of just trying it out. They would probably end up buying a season pass or ikon if they just had the chance to try it first. Newcomers and 1-5 day a year skiers have been absolutely decimated by the pricing structure and traffic issues that ski resorts face, all across the USA

  • @LivesNearCostco
    @LivesNearCostcoКүн бұрын

    The Icelantic CEO meant that his suppliers raised prices during the COVID year (many suppliers did, not just in skiing). When his cost/ski went up $50, he raised wholesale prices $25 amd retailers raised prices $50, so he’s envious that his profits went down &25/ski while retailers made an extra $25/aki.

  • @LivesNearCostco
    @LivesNearCostcoКүн бұрын

    BTW, I think both Icelantic and Moment largely target people who already ski, not new or first-time skiers. And most beginners rent skis for their first few times, so expensive skis don’t keep people from trying skiing but they can prevent new skiers from becoming frequent skiers.

    I'm a Mountain Collective pass holder and it's allowed me to ski places I never thought I'd be able to ski (Jackson Hole, Snowbird, Alta, Sun Peaks, Marmot Basin, Lake Louise, Sugarloaf) so I don't think the passes are nearly as bad as everyone makes them out to be. And about Jay Peak, I think they have a lot of Canadian customers who are starting to feel the cost of living pinch. In Canada we didn't have a cost correction in 2008 financial meltdown so our real estate is high unaffordable in a lot places. Rents have gone up significantly and mortgage rates are up but most Canadians are on fixed rate 5 year terms and are just starting to feel the effects of the rising mortgage rates. Luxuries like skiing at Jay Peak are the first thing struggling people will cut back on.

    Just picked up the final pair of skis for my quiver. I realized that the two pairs I had, did not address my need for something appropriate for a 8 or more inch snowfall, so when I found a new pair of 2024 Volkl Blaze 106 skis, with Marker Griffon gripwalk 13 bindings for $389.99 before tax, I jumped on the deal.

    I currently ski the Atomic Maverick 95Ti east coast (exclusively Sugerloaf). Would you see it to be worthwhile to include the 100ti in the quiver for the occasional excursion to Utah and those “day after” east coast storm days when things get trashed out?

I am a Stockli person and Stockli people are a thing;) I normally ski 175-184 but these skis would be great when there are a ton of people on the ski hill so I would ski them at 170.. I have been looking into getting mittens from EVO and I will try to use your link if I buy some.. Also, why don't you put the link for the places that you demo your skis? I had success with demoing from Christy Sports and Alpine Sports.. Gotta give luv to the places that help us out..

    Being the frugal guy that I am, I often wait until Evo gets very low in their inventory for the item I want (they tell you on the site) and then buy. Evo will give you the price difference back if the same item in the same size gets a price reduction within 30 days. Not a fan of Nordica boots? They have some great deals on Pro Machine and Speed Machine boots as well ($419-$489).

    When I got back into skiing after 20 years the ski shop said the first thing that I needed was boots.. I tried a lot of different pairs of boots on before I found the "right fit." I started going to BRECK in the 80s with my family.. I don't think they even had a QUAD back then.. I remember food was a little expensive on the hill back then but we could still afford it.. (chili in a bread bowl... mmmmm).. The hill was not overcrowded like it is now.. I am pretty sure that lift tickets were $35.. I remember freaking out when lift tickets got up to $50.. Now the lift tickets are $300.. The California Corporate Greed really took over and they charge $$$ for everything...

    Let me explain you how it all worked. Big corporations invented something called: "Vertical Integration". They assumed if they buy a mountain, and buy out or build 75% of condos at the mountain, and restaurateurs, and ski shops, and rentals they will be able to conquer the ski business. They hooked up all these things they had for sale to websites like Expedia and others, created a floor price, and monopolized it. That's why every place for rent looked the same. They were happy to have empty condos as long as a night would cost at around $500 and up. Game plan was simple: raise daily ticket prices to force everyone to buy BIG PASS, which forces everyone to ski THEIR resorts only, and milk you across every part of the ski process. Then they came up with something called "Corner Hopping". You simply buy out private land around federal land and close off the mountains for the public. Stupid corrupt local criminals allowed them to do all this. All they had to do at local towns was create 2 hard rules: 1. People who do not work at the town, can' buy properties. 2. No major corp can buy local ski resort. When I said 2 years ago Vail and Altera will bankrupt people made fun of me. I have seen this cycle 3 times. I have seen empty mountains, bankrupt resorts. This time is a bit bigger though. Crash will be life changing. USA is bankrupt and the post COVID expansion of credit destroyed everything in USA. Too much money, no production of assets. Fake asset prices will go below 2010 levels.
