Rewatching this to get ideas for NYCC 2024 coming up. I'll be in the tunnel on Friday with a one light setup doing up close portraits of the Cosplayers. Thank you for the detailed coverage Seth!

Appreciate the rewatch I’m glad this video went over so well I wasn’t sure who would care and who would want an hour long video to sit through haha but NYCC granted me a creator pass for this year so I’ll be doing a sequel. Not sure what it’ll be but we’ll find out. Thank you

If I see you bouncing around the Tunnel Area, I’ll try to get your attention to say hello.

Great idea what tape did you use

  • @LastXwitness

Typically use gaffers tape but that can be aggressive for some surfaces like painted walls in a home so if it’s temporary consider just like a painters tape or something lower tack to save any risk of damage.

Seth, thanks for posting this. When these first came out I thought they were such form over function. I then started looking at them and they started to really grow on me. As someone who shoots wedding stills and video, I have been on the hunt to replace the aputure 60x which is great, but a beast. I'm not sure that the 20w Hobolite would work and I haven't taken the plunge just yet, but I have to admit that they are very beautifully engineered and the focusing removable lens is really quite smart. It could help cut down the size of the lighting kit and with 12,800 of the a7sIII the loss in power may not matter as much.

I don't shoot people, but I am glad this is getting out and we are seeing how much stupid is out there.

Hi Seth! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these lights. It's inspired an idea- I would love to take these lights with their lightweight light stands to Central Park and use some CRLS Lightbridge panels to bounce the light source. It would be a convenient way to create a beautiful lighting setup without the package weighing 1000 pounds. Obviously, I don't mean I want to use these in the middle of a field on a sunny day, but something under the trees or some other form of shade would look GORGEOUS! I've been eyeing Hoboloights for years, but I think you've finally pushed me into their ecosystem!

Speaking of trends that NEED to stop. Yours is a prime example. Mount the camera! There is no artistic value or any need for the constant moving of the camera. They are doing this way too often now in movies and TV. The shaky camera thing is nothing but distracting and annoying. I've walked out of many movies due to getting headaches from the shaky camera 'effect'. When watching a movie, the camera is supposed to be your perspective. I don't know about you, but my head doesn't move around like that when I'm looking at something. There is no 'artistic' reason for this. It reminds me of a first semester film student that hasn't learned how to steady their camera.

I know exactly what street you are on in this video. Nice spot. When I do a shoot in public, I always instruct the model/dancer "to look at me. You may see another photographer or person with a camera phone fixated on you, but keep your eyes on me. So we don't miss any shots" I had a guy once ask to take a selfie with a dancer I was photographing, and I told him no. This is a paid shoot and time is $. He got upset and stormed off.

Hey Seth! A buddy of mine told me about you and your work. I recently have gotten a job were I'm going to have to use lighting and it is not something I have ever had to really use because I have always been a photographer that uses what is around. I have done photography for over 20 years, but mostly abstract close up work. My primary job is graphic artist and have used my photography in my designs. This is a whole new world for me and I'm pumped!! I love your work and thank you for these videos!
