Color Blind Architect

It may seem strange that someone who is color blind would be a design professional. But what I've learned through color blindness is that I see the world differently than 90% of people. So, I bring that alternate perspective to a variety of topics of interest.

    Those text dimensions are weird here in Russia. Almost every single software uses points to measure text height except for cad and bim software that typically use millimeters. Sometimes you want to match text sizes from different software and it can get complicated.

    Good video. Out of date drawings in the field is a major frustration. As we move from paper to digital, hopefully that goes away. Where I used to work our Sheet Index included a matrix of every sheet and a checkbox for each sheet that was affected by each revision (AutoCAD - managed manually). We also had a "REVISIONS" sheet at the end of the set where we placed a written description of changes for each revision, along with the reason for the change, i.e. Owner directed, design change, or field coordination. That Revisions sheet gave a pretty good picture of what changed and when.

    Great explanation. I'm still pretty new to Archicad and been battling to figure out how to make change/revision tracking simple as a 1 man office and this has cleared up a lot of confusing & frustrating issues I was having. I also like your tip with the vp stretching with 5 line items but I have 1 question regarding this. How do you deal with the text wrapping when it jumps to 2 lines and then obscures the line below? Basically, how can I avoid this happening when my description of a revision is too long for 1 line, and I don't want the lines below to be covered or obscured? TIA.

  • @ColorBlindArchitect
    @ColorBlindArchitect3 ай бұрын

    The text spilling over really boils down to limiting yourself on description length, using smaller text, or a longer width to the column of the schedule. If it must wrap to two lines, then you have to go into the schedule view and adjust the row height manually.

    Thanks for the video. It's odd that Enscape plugin renders in a seperate windows rather than the backdrop of the main viewport. Apart from being a cleaner integration, the interconnection between the plugin and AC seems to be a bit laggy. Enscape is Apple Silicon native but Chaos has been slow to adopt ARM & Metal & something seems suboptimal. It would be interesting to see some performance measurements between your Mac & PC. Sadly, unless companies like Chaos adopt the technologies Apple is using/providing ARM ISA & Metal/ MetalRT graphics API, the M3 processors' hardware ray tracing will be of little value. So, can we expect an M3 video? Even if it's unflattering.

    That doesn't really look like a physically based render kernel in the 3D window. It feels more like an Ambient Occlusion (AO)-based shader, which is pretty standard nowadays in a lot of other 3D software out there today (Rhino, Maya, Max and even Revit has a display mode that utlises AO-based shading). The tell would be the fact that you don't have any real-time updating reflections on reflective surfaces and the soft shading and shadowing only occurs around tight corners or close proximity geometry (that's pretty much what AO-based shading uses to achieve that effect without additional light sources.) But they do say it's experimental, so I'm hoping they're still working the kinks out and by the time it gets out of "experimental" phase it will be a full-functioning physically-based renderer that even has basic reflections and more accurate transparency/translucency. Otherwise it's a misleading misnomer. It just feels like they just ported a version of the 3D engine/kernel they now use for the new version of BIMx Pro into the mothership program, and yeah,.....that's not a physically-based renderer either. Although an improvement on the previous engine, it's still just an AO-shader. Again, software like Rhino are vastly several lightyears ahead of ArchiCAD when it comes to the display options and modes for the 3D window (including home-brew version of their own physically-based realistic renderer AND a real-time sketch rendering mode. Imagine that. Imagine having a sketch-based mode to work on in 3D in realtime with no lag) In terms of the other features, I still feel like this is a weak upgrade in the sense of thenew features they have. Design Options and interactive dimension guides are nice - but as the only Architecture-focused features, it still makes for weak upgrade, particually given the fact that they are several years and versions late in adopting those features into the program. I'm giving them something of a pass for ArchiCAD 27 since I know it comes at an "in-between" period before they made this course-correction to try to make a better effort to deliver a better upgrade after several weak version upgrades focused on structural and MEP. But that only means that version 28 had better be their best version ever. They're losing a lot of credibility fast ("they" being Graphisoft), and that's soon going to translate to customers and revenue too, if they're not too careful.

  • @ColorBlindArchitect
